I'm not even kidding it's so clear that everyone sees black people and especially black women as some sort of alternate species. I'm getting into doll collection & customization videos because I've been getting into collecting myself and toys and art are supposed to bring me happiness and even there I can't escape the anti blackness. Like... you're lucky if you find a character or doll that's consistently brown skinned and carefully designed in popular brands. Collectors will always favor light skin or fantasy colors anyways. I had to watch a white creator call a custom Garnet doll "dummy thicc" and describe her in progress proportions as "female rappery" why couldn't you just have said curvy? You know for all my issues with the Amazing Digital Circus finale I do think Jax is the perfect illustration of a specific type of trans woman. Like there's a real contingent of closeted tgirls out there who repress so hard that they've fully convinced themselves that they can never be happy and they refuse to accept the possibility of love or acceptance because that's just "cope". If you were to ask these girls to justify their decisions they'd tell you that repressing is the only reasonable option because they'd never pass and their friends and family would reject them and their whole life would fall apart but the great irony is that repressing that hard kinda does make your life fall apart in and of itself. The repression turns into self-loathing and that turns into resentment and that turns you into a miserable human being who's miserable to be around. You hate yourself and you hate everyone around you and you push away anyone who could have loved you or cared for you and then you die never knowing what it would have felt like to live honestly.

I've seen some people say they were annoyed by how much attention Jax got in the finale because they felt like the show wanted you to feel sympathy for Jax but didn't do enough with her character to make her properly sympathetic. I don't feel sympathy for Jax but I see in Jax a mirror held up to a real life tragedy that plays out over and over again. It plays out in the form of all those women on 4chan's /lgbt/ board who called me ugly and disgusting and told me to kill myself and that no one would ever accept me. I do not feel sympathy for any of them, but I feel sad that they are wasting their lives becoming emotional tarpits because they think that's preferable to being an out trans woman. If nothing else, I hope someone recognizes in Jax just how sad and tragic a way to live that is and decides they don't want to live that way anymore.

reading a historical romance novel and reflecting on the way these stories often present woke nobility for the contemporary reader. a big thing is servants. you can’t not have servants in those times but many modern readers think “but I would never have servants. it would be so weird to have servants” and in order to make the protagonists of the story more relatable they are actually friends with the servants. but flip your perspective and think of it from the side of the servants. wouldn’t it be so awful if your boss was always trying to be friends with you. a really common thing you’ll see is the woke baronet having tea in the kitchen with the servants bc he’s not like other baronets. but what if your boss wanted to hang out and talk during your lunch break every day. not so charming when you think about it that way

So the history of domestic servitude is my primary area of study, focused primarily in 18th century Britain and British America. One thing about 18th century British culture is they were obsessed with printing manuals and guides for everything, and I have read at least a couple dozen guides pertaining to servitude. Some are written by servants, some are written by masters; some are written for servants and some are for masters, in different combinations. Some get into nitty gritty details of things like cleaning methods and the like, but broadly they focus much more on the behaviours expected from both sides of the equation, etc.

For years I've wanted to do an analysis of how they differ and agree depending on who is writing (a servant or a master) and who they're writing to; I have noticed interesting trends but haven't sat down to quantify them. But probably the single most common piece of advice, which shows up in most if not all of the texts I've read regardless of author or audience, is that the worst thing a master can do is "condescend" (in the vernacular of the period) to attempt to be friends with their staff. Everyone agrees it's a terrible idea that's miserable for everyone, especially the servants. Their conception of why might vary depending on their perspective, but it's pretty ubiquitous.
