Prompt 3: “Your pulse is weak.”
It was that god-awful howling that drew you out, donning a heavy coat and gloves to ward off the crisp winter night and pocketing a knife for anything else. The howling rang off the towering pines and the bare-faced rock of the mountain as you picked your way across it, following the sound to its source.
Too low-pitched and drawn out to be coyotes, and wolves didn’t live around here. You knew what you would find before you found it, but still you advanced with utmost caution; it was a dangerous creature even when uninjured.
You found it not a mile from your house, lying in the underbrush. Immediately, the coppery scent of blood flooded your nostrils and you saw blood splattering the leaves and grass, shiny under the muted moonlight.
HeeHoo went quiet and still when he spotted you, his eyes glittering, iris all but engulfed by the pupil.
“Hey, it’s okay.” You held up your hands, cautiously stepping closer. “You know me. I won’t hurt you.”
A high whine escaped HeeHoo’s lips, but otherwise he didn’t move.
Closer inspection revealed what you’d already suspected; a snare. There was a thin twine cutting deep into HeeHoo’s wrist, and the bloody gashes that’d resulted where he’d twisted and fought to get free.
Fury boiled up within you, and you had to tamp down a long string of creative curses as you slowly pulled your knife from your pocket, holding it up so HeeHoo could see it before you crouched to cut the snare free, making sure to reassure him that you weren’t going to hurt him.
Then, you stripped off your coat, draping it over him like a blanket. “I’m going to look at your wrist, okay? Stay calm. And still.”
HeeHoo made a noise that you took as affirmation.
The cuts were deep, and bleeding profusely; and a quick check of his pulse found it shallow and racing.
“Your pulse is weak,” you told him, though he probably didn’t understand a word you said. “And you’ve lost blood. I need to take you back to my home so I can patch you up.”
He didn’t respond when you touched him, easing him into a sitting position, then taking his uninjured arm and draping it over your shoulder so you could help him up. He swayed, nearly fell and took you down with him in the process.
But, eventually, you two made some progress, stumbling across the bare-faced rock toward the floating lights of home.
