I just wanted to share this lovely except from "A History of Tom Jones, a Foundling" written in 1749:
He then bespattered the youth with abundance of that language which passes between country gentlemen who embrace opposite sides of the question; with frequent applications to him to salute that part which is generally introduced into all controversies that arise among the lower orders of the English gentry at horse-races, cock-matches, and other public places. Allusions to this part are likewise often made for the sake of the jest. And here, I believe, the wit is generally misunderstood. In reality, it lies in desiring another to kiss your a-- for having just before threatened to kick his; for I have observed very accurately, that no one ever desires you to kick that which belongs to himself, nor offers to kiss this part in another.
It may likewise seem surprizing that in the many thousand kind invitations of this sort, which every one who hath conversed with country gentlemen must have heard, no one, I believe, hath ever seen a single instance where the desire hath been complied with;--a great instance of their want of politeness; for in town nothing can be more common than for the finest gentlemen to perform this ceremony every day to their superiors, without having that favour once requested of them.
I feel like taking Latin in college made me respect doctors less. The number of diagnoses that are just repeating your symptom back to you in Latin is...many.
people gotta come to terms with the fact that we can't get all the luxuries all the time anymore. this is like two weeks of food. (some more some less)
I kinda wanna do this, I mean buy this stuff and see how long. Can stretch it. But I live with roomies and I'm not sure how down with it they'd be.
Atomic shrimp on youtube dose some very strict budget challenges (going back a few years) and some losser ones lately. I've wanted to try something similar for a while.
i mean i'm doing it right now because of poverty reasons. it's really not bad, especially if you enjoy routone. just your meals will go from tasty crunchwrap supremes to kinda bland but easy.
Either groceries are WAY cheaper where you are or you live in the USA and are using a very different dollar that's worth way more than my dollar, but that's a great grocery basis either way. Obviously you need to vary the vegetables sometimes for nutrition reasons.
You can remove the blandness by splurging on a different bottled spice or sauce when you can afford it, and rotating through those with your meals.
I live 25km from a major city in Australia and I would pay an absolute minimum of $101 AU for those grocery items, none of which are rare or difficult to obtain here, and I omitted the treat. That’s a minimum of $72 US with today’s exchange rate, and I actually trust my country to have a functioning food safety division. Even so I’m not actually convinced you wouldn’t die of malnutrition or mercury poisoning eating that much tuna and zero greens for an extended period.
“We can’t get all the luxuries all the time any more” there are ZERO luxuries on that list my friend and while I’m glad you felt able to survive on it when you made that post I really hope you’re getting more and better food now and are not experiencing related health problems.
Obviously most of these prices are high even for the cheap stores, but this one got me:
2lb ground flaxseed ($4)
I do not believe that there is anywhere in the entire world, besides an actual flax farm, where you can buy two POUNDS of ground flaxseed for less than ten pounds of potatoes.
(The carrots and potatoes are close to accurate here, but that's it. For the rice and beans, that's almost right for one pound, not four. And I live in an area with a low cost of living in the US. So neither this, nor the lister, has any bearing on OP's prices.)
Some of those prices were pretty close, some not so much-- but notice the flax seed package is 1lb not two. And that thing of oats is 42oz, not even close to 4lbs.
This is a Kroger in Columbus Ohio for reference, which is probably a pretty average cost of living kind of place. You might be able to find better deals on some things if you have the transportation to go to more than one store (I know you can get way cheaper rice at the international grocery stores, for instance, but anywhere with fewer store options wouldn't have that choice)
it appears the hitler youth of social media have discovered aphantasia (the inability to visualize mental imagery) and their vibes-based understanding of everything has lead them to (falsely) believe aphantasia is a sign of lower intelligence. you really have to wonder what it's like to be such a loser you spend your life searching for Superior Traits you can identify with.
Pretty sure I remember @sizzlingsandwichperfection-blog also joins us in club "what apple?"
Guessing they're basing their reasoning on how many visual logic questions are on IQ tests, but I've always been able to do well at those even without mental images, just reasoning it out.
Learn how to say Pescatarian with EmmaSaying free pronunciation tutorials.Definition and meaning can be found here:https://www.google.com/se
And the "-rian" in Darian is pronounced (at least everywhere I've ever heard it spoken) like the "-rian" in pescatarian. Why? How do you pronounce them?
-rian and -rian isn't a rhyme when the previous syllable contains all the stress in the word. You need the previous syllable to rhyme as well. -rian and -rian unstressed is just playing around.
Any minute now some poet is gonna come in here and say some shit like "well a SOFT rhyme is X and a HARD rhyme is Y and if you go by the EIGHTEENTH CENTURY PHILOSOPHY of COUNTER-CLOCKWISE RHYMES where a special exception is made for three syllable English words of Greek origin..."
Worth noting that Bill Gates got on the buffet train and donated enough to not be on the top richest lists anymore. There are many negative things to say about him (not getting into that right now) but credit where credit is due
imo if you are adapting something that plays with its medium into a new medium (book to film, podcast to tv show) you are obligated to ALSO play with the new medium and do something interesting. I don’t care if it’s not 100% faithful, I care if it WORKS. You cannot take a comic book that pushes the boundaries of what you can do in that space and then make the most boring visually flat screen adaptation you have fundamentally missed the point
Ok so my first run was mystical/booksmart, saw Kaneeka all transparent in the recaps, explored the house on my own, then went to Tabitha and got the toxic yuri betrayal, got arrested.
Second go, talk to animals/street smart, explored with Dustin and his mom, went to Avery but said I'm seeing this through, we're on our way to check on Julius.
Third save, Hot/powerful himbo run, woke up at Stella's and explored with her, went to Tabitha and had the conversation with Stella on my side this time, still got arrested.
Fourth run, street smart/keen eye, The Scene with Wayne, tried to look for witch but didn't know where to start , went to Dr Kelly (because I knew from other runs she doesn't trust sybil), went looking for Sybil, talked with Miles.
Fifth run, re-do on the street smart/keen eye save because I remembered that's the one where I was closest with Tabitha, so decided to not trust Wayne and go talk to Tabitha, was gentle and non-accusatory in talking to her, not arrested, Tabitha knows where the next carving is, on the way to the farm with her.
It's amazing how different these all are! Every run besides the first there was no Kaneeka in the recap at all, I'm excited to try the one where I didn't drink the tea. I've a few more left to try, one Reese romance one Oscar, can't wait to see where those go too.
Previous poll remade because I forgot a whole century the first time, this is what I get for doing this on mobile LOL
Think of the oldest song that you know by heart — can sing the melody and any words it has from memory, without looking it up.
Search the name of it in Wikipedia, looking for when it was first documented with both the melody and (if applicable) lyrics you know, together.
When is it ACTUALLY from? (If it’s way newer than you think, you can’t switch to an older song. Answer based on this one you initially THOUGHT was the oldest.)
20th century (1900s) or later
19th century (1800s)
18th century (1700s)
17th century (1600s)
15th-16th centuries (1400s-1500s)
13th-14th centuries (1200s-1300s)
11th-12th centuries (1000s-1100s)
First millennium CE (if you are not a musician, no you don't, go back)
It's the Seikilos Epitaph (circa 1st century CE), oldest complete melody found
Voting ended onJan 3
I am a music historian with a PhD and the point of this poll is that the vast majority of people don’t actually know much music from pre-1500s or so, and most music that people think is ancient or medieval is actually far more recent.
There are no options before the first millennium CE because the Epitaph of Seikilos is the oldest complete work of music found anywhere in the world, and it's around 2000 years old. If you think you know something older than that, either only the text was written down (e.g. Biblical, Vedic and Greco-Roman hymns) or it only exists in fragments (e.g. the Hurrian hymns and Orestes stasimon). Which is to say, it does not count for this.
If it fits into a few of these potential time frames, pick the one that's considered the most likely. If historians genuinely have no fucking clue, THEN you can go back and try with another really old song.
Boost this one please! Now that I've finally got it right and the spread actually makes some sense, I'd like to see what happens when more people take it :)
i have a humble request to all indie comics artists and zine makers: please type your text. your handwriting is unreadably bad i'm sorry. i know it compromises your artistic vision but i cannot read whatever you're writing
Amateur tip (if it was pro it wouldn't be a zine): if you still want it to look kind of crap, get a typewriter! Electric ones from like the 80s are not too pricy, and you can cut out the typewriter words and do the layout by glueing/taping them on and photocopying it, which keeps the super handmade feel without sacrificing legibility.
