Kaigaku is a lot more private about his sexuality in the Taisho Era but is well aware and comfortable with the fact that he is pansexual with a preference for male partners. In modern/gakuen verses he is out and proud. Pride month in his Popstar AU has him wearing pride flags and any shows have him singing pride themed songs.

Kaigaku was born in a small shack on the edge of the poorer district of Hokuto, in Yamanashi prefecture. The local Suwa Hachiman Shrine was where he spent a good portion of his early childhood, in the care of the kannushi and miko that attended to the daily tasks of the shrine.

When he came into Jigoro's care at thirteen years of age, learning that the nearby city was Hokuto, he started to spend what little time he was not training in the area that he was raised until he was six years old when his father passed away.

Around mid-July to early August he will find himself in the peach orchards, enjoying the sweet white peaches that the area is known for. When he was younger, this was often the only food he was able to eat fresh and it was actually stealing fruits from an orchard that had him caught by police and sent to Gyomei's temple to reform and be raised.

Kaigaku is not aware of his own family name in the Taisho era. This stems from how young he was when he was orphaned as well as an overall rejection of his biological father's memory/legacy. If he was aware of Gyomei's name he would have been introducing himself as Kaigaku Himejima after the incident at the temple but he was not aware of Gyomei's name, only knowing him by his title.

As such, Kaigaku will either take the family name of someone dear to him (the mended bonds AU with thunderbreathe we love alcohol in this house ok for example has him introducing himself as Kaigaku Agatsuma), chose a family name he finds 'cool' or by taking the family name of his romantic partner (for example Kocho, Shifuyu, Shinazugawa or Kanroji).

currently am typing up a HC about Kaigaku's preference for last names in the Taisho Era and a HC about where he is from, probably just gonna go ahead and post them

currently doing some research to determine my son's hometown based on the small details i have already used in threads with alcohol from the boys going into town near jigoro's and finally may have decided on a hometown that can also be around where jigoro trained them and am quite proud of myself for finding it
