one thing I love about black sails is how all of the character relationships are so tangled and entertwined that having one ship that you focus on while ignoring everything else (as often happens in other fandoms) is impossible. maxanne is my #1 of course, but you simply can't think about max and anne's relationship without also thinking about anne's relationship with jack, and max's with eleanor, and subsequently eleanor's with vane and rogers, and how all of these relationships shape the others. silverflint that doesn't account for madi in some way simply loses its flavor, and silvermadi without considering each of their relationships to flint is no fun. flint and miranda obviously have a huge thomas-shaped hole in their relationship that impacts every interaction and decision they make. and thinking about post-finale flint and thomas without miranda makes me want to lie on the floor and wail for three hours.

and the best part is, it doesn't even matter if you read any of these relationships as romantic, platonic, or any other secret third or fourth thing. the text says that they care about and impact each other deeply, and that's what matters

Re-read all mzds books after years.. so much has changed now that I'm older. I used to be such a Wangxian fan... I have a lot of opinions of certain characters now

Jiang Cheng is soo good honestly. If my brother did all that shit, I would have cut his fucking head off and then immediately killed myself. If my entire family and sect were murdered except for a baby and a mass murdering brother, I would have gone insane. I would not have raised an entire child and brought my sect above the heights it was before on my own. The ancestral hall scene? Man, I would have lost it. Did I judge Jiang Cheng for his, frankly, atrocious words to Wei Wuxian in that scene? Yes I did. But if I went through all that trauma and I was in his place? Nothing would have stopped me from unleashing the full wrath of Yunmeng Jiang on those three.

Wei Wuxian is precious too. No, I don't hate him. He is a naive, rude, brash, impulsive but good-natured and intelligent child who never really had to face the consequences of his actions and the first time he had to, it hit him like a semi truck.

Threatening Wen Chao led to the Sect getting destroyed. Don't tell me that it didn't, the Cloud Recesses wasn't decimated to the very last shidi. Lotus Pier wouldn't have been razed to the ground if Wen Chao didn't go crying to daddy about it.

The surgery on Jiang Cheng. Yes, Jiang Cheng was ready to die. Who wouldn't have been, in that case? They destroyed his core, whipped him bloody, and probably did much, much worse things to him. But Wei Wuxian shouldn't have made Wen Qing perform the surgery! Fifty percent chance she said! What if Jiang Cheng died? Then what would be the point?

Running around drunk and playing with dead bodies while Jiang Cheng worked his ass off. Choosing the Wens over Jiang Cheng and their Sect who needed him. Getting Jin Zixuan and then Jiang Yanli and thousands of innocent people killed. While I don't completely blame Wei Wuxian for all of his actions after the core transfer- he was probably going insane from demonic cultivation and no core- he could have made some much better decisions.

Jiang Fengmian is complete trash- so is Yu Ziyuan, honestly- and deserves so much hell. While he was a major cause of his son's insecurities and will probably haunt Jiang Cheng for the rest of his life, the person he screwed over most is Wei Wuxian. Wei Wuxian never learnt his impulsive and brash decisions not only impact him but also the sect and who was the reason? Jiang Fengmian. He doted on him, let him run freely, and hand-waved any concerns, all because of what? He saw his parents in the boy? Did he even love Wei Wuxian for who he was or rather who his parents were?

Lan Wangji is just.. ugh. His only personality is "Wei Ying". That's it. That's all there is to it. Wei Wuxian kills Lan disciples and so many innocents and the Lans rightfully turn against him? Who cares? Lan Wangji is just going to turn against his own sect!

33 lashes, 3 years of seclusion and 13 years of "mourning"- Jiang Cheng mourned everyone he's ever known and he rebuilt his sect and raised a sect heir- he gets back together with his love like nothing happened. Like he didn't injure 33 sect members and get punished for it for the very same man who didn't even reciprocate at that time! He even named Lan Sizhui- Sizhui : to recollect, long for- after his dead crush? They weren't even together before he died! His treatment of Jiang Cheng, Jin Ling and anyone who was rude to his precious "Wei Ying" was abysmal.

I think, post-canon, Wei Wuxian should not stay with Lan Wangji. He should either return to Lotus Pier or travel the world on his own. He shouldn't marry and stay with Lan Wangji in Cloud Recesses. With their rigid rules would Wei Wuxian even survive there?

He is honestly so young. Everyone else had 13 years to move on and adapt, but everything is still fresh in his mind. Lan Wangji is the only person he didn't really hurt with his actions, yes, but he shouldn't get married so early with how young and traumatized he is! Let him live first!

Wei Wuxian misses Lotus Pier. He misses and loves his family, Jiang Cheng and Jin Ling. He has the world to see. He has actions to repent and families to apologise- what else can he do, really- to. The only thing in Lan Wangji's life is "Wei Ying". Wei Wuxian should not stay with a person who insists he is innocent when he's not.

I can't stop thinking about how Jiang Cheng lost all composure when Jin Guangyao took Jin Ling hostage, how he reflexively called out to Wei Wuxian for help in the same tone of voice he used to use as a child. And how Wei Wuxian, at the sound of his shidi’s fear and distress, moved without thinking, to do whatever he asked—to fix it, to protect him like he’s always done. How, If Lan Wangji hadn’t pulled Wei Wuxian back to snap him out of it, he would have run to Jiang Cheng on instinct, putting them all in further danger.

like to understand eleanor guthrie you HAVE to understand that personal affection and usefulness are completely equivalent in her mind for the entirety of her life. her father did not love her because she wasn't a boy and was therefore not useful to him. so she shaped her entire self until she could do all the things a son could do and be useful to him. she can't say up front that she cares about flint so she has to kind of bluff about how valuable he is as a captain. she's shown to pretty exclusively be attracted to vane when he's doing her favors, and he thoroughly understands this dynamic. she pays extra to make sure max doesn't have to do a particular sex act with other clients, with the implication that it's bc max dislikes doing that act. it's part of why she's so hurt when max declines her protection. mutual usefulness is the entire basis for her eventual relationship with rogers.

which is why it's awesome that madi, her foil, is the one to say "when a man first needs you and then calls you friend, a little suspicion is a healthy thing" likeeeeee has anybody seen this show before

most difficult problem of writing fanfiction is when you need a character to express the particular surprised/dismayed/disappointed sentiment of going "jesus christ" but this isn't a lore friendly thing to say and there's nothing lore friendly that conveys quite the same emotion

jiang cheng's life is so hard he's just going around having pretty understandable reactions to wei wuxian trampling all over his emotions and people keep telling him to "mind his words" about it. i think he should get a gold star for using his words at all when he has several pointy and/or electrified weapons on his person that he could be using instead.

jiang cheng says "it was because you played the hero for this lan-er'gongzi that all of lotus pier and my parents went down" but it obviously was not because of that and jiang cheng knows it. what he's saying is, you chose him. you chose the dafan wen. you didn't choose me. and now you have the gall to bring one of these people to the resting place of my family? the place that belongs to me, the place you left, the people you left? you can choose other people, but don't fucking rub my face in it! he's not mad that wei wuxian went to the ancestral hall; he's been wanting him to do that. he's mad that he brought lan wangji. jiang cheng wants him to go to the ancestral hall because he cares about yes, jiang fengmian and yu ziyuan and jiang yanli, but also because he cares about jiang cheng. and instead wei wuxian goes there behind his back and brings the guy who he ran away from jiang cheng with on the mountain and when jiang cheng comes in to confront him he answers him tonelessly without looking at him and only makes eye contact when jiang cheng insults lan wangji. i think jiang cheng should get a fucking break. but instead he gets the golden core reveal.

jiang cheng accuses wei wuxian of things that are demonstrably untrue and unfair and i think sometimes people get hung up on those things and don't listen to the rest of what he's saying, which is pretty valid?? like it is actually incredibly rude to take an outsider into the jiang clan ancestral hall without permission. it is actually incredibly rude to bring your buddy who killed your nephew's dad to the place where your nephew feels safe. these things are true even if you disregard the fact that even the untrue and unfair things are his way of communicating things that are true but hard for him to say directly, like "you are acting like you don't care about me and that is hurting me deeply." he's communicating that by pretending that wei wuxian caused other things (the fall of lotus pier) which hurt him deeply and which he is allowed to own as having hurt him deeply. this is a shorthand that wei wuxian understood before, but he's no longer interpreting it through the correct lens and jiang cheng is either unaware of that or has not been able to adjust his communication style accordingly and who can blame him, it's not like wei wuxian has made any effort whatsoever to communicate with him! he just keeps shutting down and running away! i'm not sure how jiang cheng is supposed to learn how to act with him when he isn't actually given the opportunity to spend time with him.

insulting lan wangji is obviously unfair but it's the only thing that wei wuxian will react to. the only way to get wei wuxian looking at him and engaging with him, even if by yelling (which, remember, is their love language!), is to smacktalk lan wangji, so that is what he does. yeah it's immature but this whole thing is a clusterfuck! i think it is very understandable given the circumstances!

Poor Jiang Cheng was out on his very first Solo Road Trip, All By Himself (like an adult!) and when he walks into this place he’s like, LADY WEN! OMG what are the odds? And she’s like, whatever, and he doesn’t even let it ruffle his feathers, he’s in too good of a mood! Gonna sit down and get some buns! Also because he’s pretty used to being ignored but it’s fine he’s on his exciting trip to Find Wei Wuxian and Protect Him!

And then she starts in with this and initially he’s like oh yeah? and tries to top with the wine, but after she digs in with the “serve ours first” he’s like okay fine it’s fine I don’t want to fight Lady Wen and then she says to throw it away and all he has is confusion. What did I do wrong this time?? he thinks miserably. He likes Lady Wen! It’s okay if she doesn’t really like him back, after all who does, really, but he was getting to have his own adventure where for once no one could steal the spotlight from him because he’s by himself, and for once he doesn’t have to worry about what people think because he’s by himself, and now Lady Wen is bullying him out of nowhere???

And then when she confirms that yes, she IS bullying him, that hurt and confusion on his face? Jiang Cheng’s Fun Road Trip has taken a turn for the worst and it’s awful! He literally tries to just Nope the fuck out of there, not only because he’s not willing to fight a bunch of Wen soldiers, but because he’s hurt.

Except!

It’s actually a way to get him to where she can whisper a secret! It was all a ploy! She wasn’t really bullying him!

OH MY GOD IT’S A SECRET MISSION!!!!

Anyway CQL!Jiang Cheng is totally in love with Wen Qing and it’s really cute.

i would say i support akram salim's rights and his wrongs, but he's never done anything wrong ever. bruising that guy's windpipe and throwing that other guy down the stairs? just funny little man of mystery things & not police misconduct in the least. he is naught but a civilian with a particular set of skills 🤗
