Hi There 👋
As you might have noticed, we’re beta-testing something new: Tumblr Post+. What’s Post+? A big deal, for starters.Tumblr’s Post+ is our new subscription tool that allows creators to make some of their posts exclusive to paid subscribers, and allows users to support their favorite creators. Fear not, Tumblr will always be free to use, this is just an added, optional feature you can take advantage of to empower your favorite artists, fanfic writers, or maybe even that one mashup Supernatural/Studyblr blog you’ve been following since 2016.
(3 a.m. infomercial voice) But wait, there’s more. We want to know every possible way we can make Post+ the best experience for you and your community. To do that, we’d love to hear from you. Specifically, we want your thoughts on how you’d use a tool that allows you to share and subscribe to exclusive posts on Tumblr. What would you like to see? Don’t be shy 👉👈. Get in touch. Do it often, if you like. We’re excited to hear your thoughts. And keep your eyes on this space (go ahead now, click follow ☝️). Teamwork makes the dream work, etc.
I know there are other posts going around about this, but I wanted to reblog their actual direct blog post about it and say - IF YOU ARE A FAN CONTENT CREATOR, ESPECIALLY A GIF MAKER OR FIC WRITER, DO NOT UTILIZE THIS SERVICE.
Please, for the love of god, do not do it. We lose whatever protections we have under fair use as soon as you monetize your fan content (particularly fic or gifs/edits). You will be DMCA’d, likely lose your blog, and there is even the potential for lawsuits.
Part of the silent agreement we made when making this content for our respective fandoms is we do not monetize it. That’s our safeguard. This is why AO3 is adamant about not linking to sites like Patreon or Ko-Fi on their website. That is how they are able to protect us from lawsuits and content purges.
Tumblr’s primary function is mainly a fan content site, which means this service they are offering is dumb and dangerous and I strongly urge every content creator within fandom, who is making works using and utilizing characters and content from the stuff we watch/read, to avoid and denounce this service.
Please fill out this survey and let them know what a terrible idea this is.
