#about me
April 14, 2017
Things you need to know going into this post:
1.) I did not write this for you to feel sorry for me. I’m not doing this for attention. These words were hard, but maybe there’s someone else out there who is like me and if this can help them, then it’s worth it.
2.) If you’re struggling with suicidal thoughts, there’s help out there. You can call 1-800-273-8255, 24/7, to speak to someone.
And 3.) trigger warnings abound for suicidal ideations, depression, etc. If you don’t want to/can’t read about that then I 110% understand.

Hi. Hello. It’s me.
It’s been a while, hasn’t it? This year is supposed to be about #choosingjoy, but with the country/world in the state it’s in, and with my brain being messed up, it’s been really hard.
I have a confession.
I would rather not talk about it, actually. It’s embarrassing, humiliating, and y’all know I’m an oversharer on so many things, but this … This is hard to talk about.
One year later.
It’s been a hard year. I’ve been thinking about what I want to say or if I even should say something. I discussed the anniversary of The Incident™️ in therapy Friday and just like how I feel about grief things, The Incident™️ feels like it was yesterday and so far away at the same time.
The past year has been meds and therapy and so so so much work on my thought processes. I won’t sit here and sugarcoat things and wax poetic about how I’m SO! MUCH! BETTER! EVERYTHING! IS! SUNSHINE! AND! ROSES!
Because it’s not.
Even with meds and therapy I still have bad days. But I have coping skills I didn’t have before. And while the bad days and intrusive thoughts are still there (and I wonder if they’ll ever be completely gone) they’re spaced out. And I’m mostly able to remember it’s a bad day, not a bad life. If I absolutely can’t deal and my coping skills aren’t working I’ve allowed myself to reach out to my close friends and tell them I’m having a hard time. It’s embarrassing and I hate doing it, but there was a night not too long ago I called Amanda and had to have her distract me.
I’m so grateful to have so many people who love me and put up with me, even when I’m unlovable. I’m not always the easiest person to love, especially when I’m having a bad anxiety day and need constant reassurances...but my friends keep showing up and loving me anyway. Therapy tells me that I am, in fact, worthy of love, but I still have a hard time believing it. I feel overwhelmingly blessed to have the friends that I do and I often wonder what I did to deserve them.
I hope I’m as good of a friend to them as they are to me.
There have been many good days that last year’s me would never have believed possible. I recently “graduated” up to the next therapy workbook, so I am actually making progress, progress that even I can see.
I guess the biggest difference is that the past year has given me hope. Hope for a more fulfilled and happy life. Hope for more good days than bad. And the knowledge that I’m not alone. There are people who will hold my hand when things get dark.
And hey, if my brain can’t make the neuro transmitters that I need, store bought is fine.
Camper the camp cat.
Dream big.
Holy moly, me oh my. It’s been awhile, hasn’t it?
2017 was hard…for a myriad of reasons.
But it was about choosing joy. I got on some meds for my anxiety and depression and started seeing a therapist.
I stopped working on Little Foxes, at the suggestion and guidance of my therapist. We set a deadline of 60 days for me to work on it as much as I could and then I needed to shelve it for awhile. It was during this time that I got the idea for a romance novel. I mean, don’t get me wrong, I love to read books about super dirty sex and over the top love…I just never thought I could write them, you know?
But that’s what I started for a nano project and I’m still working at it. Chipping away a little bit at a time. This WIP brought and continues to bring me so much joy. It’s easy, well, I mean writing is never easy but this story is easier to tell. I can’t decide if it’s because it’s fun and funny, all tropey and just over the top or if something inside me has changed. I’ve gone from struggling to get 200-500 words per writing session to 1500-3000+ per session.
Little Foxes is a very important story to me and there’s a lot of pressure (internally) to get it right. It’s a huge exploration of grief and relationships and finding yourself when everything you thought you knew and the person you thought you were has been absolutely decimated. It’s about crawling out of that deep hole of grief and despair…and maybe I can’t get it right because maybe I’m not there yet. Maybe I’m not who I need to be or where I need to be to tell the story in the way that I want to. It’s taken a lot of therapy and to accept that it’s okay. It’s okay that I’ve spent years working on something that isn’t finished. It’s okay not to be perfect. It’s okay to know that something isn’t working and come back to it later. Or not ever come back to it.
The most important thing to me is that I never get back to where I was emotionally and creatively in the beginning of last year.
2017 pushed me and stretched me and made me search for and redefine what joy looked like for me. While I’ll never be able to list or describe all of it, there are the things that stick out the most from the past year.
· Wellbutrin and therapy and more good days than bad.
· Being able to come home and immediately dive into cooking dinner or doing homework with Alison instead of needing 20 minutes to crawl in the bed and stare at the ceiling.
· Finally sleeping through the night.
· Reading whatever I want to read and logging it on my goodreads anyway, no matter how dirty the title is.
· Making new friends and reconnecting with old ones.
· Book signings and writing workshops and groupme convos.
· Texts from Susanne and Kati.
· Messages from Meghan and Muffy and Victoria.
· Amanda’s dog finally, begrudgingly accepting me.
· Tuesday night writing with Amy.
· Midnight texting sessions with Kristin.
· Trips to Pie Lab with Jeff, even the times when we get there to find that they have inevitably sold out of all of the good pies.
· Alison reading a book to me all by herself.
· Lunch dates at Chuy’s with Amanda.
So 2017 was wrapping up and I had found lots of things that made me actually feel joy, but I didn’t have a clue what to focus on for 2018. My therapist suggested making a vision board. I balked at first because one, I’m not crafty AT ALL, and two I had no clue what that would even look like for me. 2017 felt like a lot of things were ending. Relationships and feelings and creatively. So with all of those things in mind I grabbed some magazines and pink poster board and printed off things that made me happy and created a vision board for 2018.
So the 2018 theme is:
Almost immediately after choosing Dream and Conquer the word dream has popped up everywhere, just like Joy did in 2017 and Brave did in 2016. I think it’s the universe’s way of telling me I made the right choice and I’m exactly where I need to be. I’ve started taking pictures every time I see the word dream around me and can’t wait to see how many there are by the end of the year. Speaking of that, I saw this sign in Homegoods right after I chose dream and conquer:
It made me laugh and I took a picture and sent it to my therapist. I felt like it was the universe challenging me, reminding me that nothing worth having comes without work. To achieve my dreams means I’m going to have to dig deeper and push myself harder than ever before. It’s time to dream more and dream bigger and to conquer some of my demons while still becoming brave and choosing joy. It’s time for adventures and meeting goals and writing more and being a better friend to myself and others. I’m so tired of feeling like a failure.
But I’m still here. And that’s not something I would have thought possible at the beginning of 2017.
***I drafted this in January and forgot to post it. I found it in my drafts folder today and am happy to say that everything I wrote then still applies over 2 months later. Things can change so quickly, you know. I'm still making significant progress with smutnovel and daring myself to have some big lofty dreams. It feels silly sometimes so I try to temper it with smaller obtainable dreams, like dreaming of a clean kitchen or having the laundry all caught up, even if it's just for a second.
There's something about dreaming big that makes me feel raw, exposed, and vulnerable. I'm trying to sit with the feelings though, trying to figure them out rather than pretending that I don’t feel that way. It's a battle some days to allow myself to dream. Daydreaming feels wasteful somehow, like I could be pouring that time and energy into something else, like the 99 million other things that need to be done.
Last year during the really bad times Amy finally talked me into reading A Court of Thorns and Roses (series) by Sarah J Maas. The second book in the series, A Court of Mist and Fury, quickly became one of my all time favorite books. As in I have it in hardback, ebook, and audiobook. It's that serious lol. I can't tell you why I connect so strongly to this book, why it brings me so much comfort, but I've read/listened to it probably 20 times in the past year. I was thinking about this one night on my way home from Nashville and I realized that the theme of dreams/dreamers is a huge part of the book. Maybe I subconsciously picked dream because of that? I don't know.
I don't know how to wrap this up nicely. Since this is (as always) just a free flow of thoughts and feelings and ramblings, I'll end this by sharing two of my favorite quotes from ACOMAF:
honestly why does Mr. Darcy, a man from the late 1700s and early 1800s, understand that an independent female is an awesome thing more than people from 2017? also he respects her decision to reject him?
Because a woman wrote him.
Because a woman wrote him.

Another year gone
It’s 12:41am and I can’t sleep, so I’m sitting at the kitchen table in my house - a place and a life and a person so vastly different than this night 12 years ago. I’ve been trying to figure out what to write about this day for weeks. I don’t know why I still feel the need to write about this day. One would think that by now I surely would have said all the things that needed to be said. And maybe I have. Maybe this is just a process of me repeating the same feelings in different words over and over and over because there’s nothing new left to say but I can't quite let it go. I talked to my therapist about this. About wanting to write but having no idea what to write, I mean. It feels so wrong not to write something. Like, if I don’t do it then no one will know. No one will remember that August 19th is a day where I try to hide all of my brokenness but am instead laid bare. Because if I don’t write about it, will anyone remember you at all? She tried to suggest that instead of nice lovely things or angsty emotional things that I write my anger out. I considered it, but anger is just so exhausting. And it doesn’t really matter what emotion I choose to write about because writing my thoughts and feelings out - it doesn’t change anything. It doesn’t bring you back, so I don’t know why I’m doing it. I feel so stupid and childish for writing this because I’m a goddamn adult and a parent and yet I’m here writing this stupid shit because I can’t sleep because your death and this date makes the panic and questions and rage swirl around in my head until nothing makes sense and my heart - my heart - is empty and full and numb and bleeding and I can’t breathe. So I take this blank white screen and fill it up with the keystrokes that make letters into words and I type and delete and type and delete and type and delete over and over and over again until my fingers hurt and I still don’t feel any better so I write some more. *** I don’t remember your laugh or the exact shade of your eyes. I don’t remember your voice or the way it felt for you to hug me. Was it more of a side squeeze hug or a full on thing? I don't remember your hands, although mom tells me from time to time that I have your thumbs. Most of the time when I look at them I only see me, not you. But when my thumbs become yours, I’m back in the basement of the funeral home holding your cold lifeless hand and I’m sobbing and silently begging the gods of any and all realms to bring you back. But my prayers have always fallen on deaf ears. There are things I could never forget, like your undying love for Mountain Dew and Reese’s Cups - how many times did I bring you those thing to try to make you happy, or because you were having a bad day or just because I wanted to do something nice? I thought I remembered your order from Cardinal, but the more I think about it the less sure I am. Was it a #1 with cheese - Ketchup and Mayonnaise only, an order of fries, and a jumbo Mountain Dew? Something about the combination seems a bit off. I can’t even remember an order that I made for you hundreds of times. And I feel so ashamed. No, relieved. Maybe both. Even with medicine and therapy, I just exist on a good day. I wonder if you ever felt this way. Being me is exhausting and overwhelming and I think about how I’m 32 and every day brings me closer to 40, and I don’t know what it will be like if I ever get the chance to be older than you ever got to be. I miss you with every heartbeat and I don’t miss you at all. I think maybe I miss the idea of you. Of the person I thought I wanted and needed and never got. I wanted the version of you that your friends got. I wanted the stories and the laughter and the camaraderie. I wanted to know all the things that you kept from me. You had impossibly high standards that I could never meet and I knew, just knew by that look you gave me that it was never enough. That I was never enough. Or maybe I was too much. I don’t know. We never remember the good things, though, do we? I’m staring at the huge sign on my wall that says “choose joy.” It’s the thing I chose to focus on this year because it was my heart’s greatest desire - to be happy. To find joy and capture it. To choose it every day. At the beginning of the year, when all things are new, I felt like I had the choice to shape the year into my choosing. Like I could call forth and claim things, speak them into being. I feel really naive now. I wonder if you ever had any joy. And if it is really a choice. If the joy comes from the hard work and every single facet of every single decision that we make. If the joy is in the doing and not in the end result. I wonder if I could ever choose to let you go. To let the grief go. To no longer look at August 19th as a day to mourn and reflect. Could I take this day and choose joy? Would it be enough to know that love is multifaceted and flawed and that when you were 32, I was 12 and that you probably didn’t have shit figured out any more than I do now? Maybe grief is really just another form of love. Maybe it’s all the love I had and never got to give, all the things I wished we were and never will be. Maybe grief is an outpouring of love that has no place left to go. And maybe you loved me in the only way you knew how to love a daughter with a heart of wildfire, who wore her feelings on her sleeves. I loved you with the same wild reckless abandon that I love everyone because I don’t know any other way. It’s August 19th and the sun is coming up over the horizon and I am writing these words to remind myself that you were real. You were real. You were real. And maybe just for today, so am I.
Friendly reminder that Dorian Havilliard, Crown Prince of Adarlan, suggested that Celaena Sardothien name Fleetfoot "Goldie."
moving her arm made sparks dance before her eyes, but she extended it until her fingertips reached the line of chalk, and there not an inch from chaol, the thick white mark separating them.
and in that moment, somehow his face was the only thing that mattered. she stirred, and couldn’t stop her sob as her body erupted with pain that made her lie still again. but she kept her focus on his brown eyes, on his tightly pressed lips as they parted and whispered, “get up.”
