Today, in honour of the death of Pope Francis, I would like to recall his tireless struggle to make my life worse.

Both the same-sex marriage and gender identity laws in Argentina passed while he was Archbishop of Buenos Aires, which is to say the most prominent religious figure in the country, and he fiercely opposed them (famously calling the former a plot by the devil to destroy God's plan).

As a transgender lesbian in Argentina, having legally changed my name and gender and being married to my wife, things that have made my life enormously better and would not have been possible if he'd had his way, I can only say this: fuck you, you piece of shit. We won, you lost.

The next pope will probably also be a terrible person, because that's a requirement for the job of head of the Catholic Church. May it fade into irrelevance in my lifetime.

i genuinely think boats are such good places to set a story because it automatically gives you a set of really interesting circumstances -- boats are transitory, you are not meant to stay on them forever, there is an automatic assumption of ending up somewhere different from where you started...characters are forced into close proximity, stakes are higher, etc. boats also just look cool, so that's always a plus

-its debated if the direwolf is even a wolf to begin with - they used grey wolves, which are the furthest relatives of the direwolves -they commented on 'phenotypics should be apart of philogenetics/taxonomy. i CANNOT stress this enough. categorizing an organism after its LOOKS is how we got into the absolutely ungodly mess that past biologists left us to organize. can you try doing that to PLANTS?

-they altered 20 genes of an animal that has around 2,477,000,000, so they edited 0.00008% of a grey wolf and they're calling it direwolf

-notice that every single place that this has been parroted on. why is it everywhere BUT the reputable science magazines? like nature or science? yeah.

-im not the "humans shouldnt be playing god" crowd, but ok yes. hypothetically speaking, they did bring back direwolves, 100%...... what for??? because it's cool? what ecological niches are these things going to fill? i know these are just wolves that are going to be kept for... god knows what but. genuinely. if we are serious in bringing extinct animals, we need to think what in gods name we are going to do with them after. none of todays ecosystems even come close to be what they were used to. so in terms of enrichement, temperature, season, prey, ecological role, territory, interactions with other species, what could we even do here?
