Skate Gif Sunday
What things are you working on while at practice? For me it’s building the confidence to be on my toe stops and not think I’ll immediately break my leg. Let’s hear it, what are you trying to improve on? 🙉🙉🙉
I'm trying to improve on slowing things down in my mind during scrimmage. We're not allowed to at all until we our skills are cleared, so it's very new to me! I'm also working on hip checking people more efficiently.
Ps I love this sign.
1940s Roller Derby matchbook
Hi there! We’re getting ready to start on book 3, so in the meantime, we’re both gonna post little informational derby comics!
This is lovely!
I’ve leveled up!
Sorry it’s been so long since I’ve posted, summers are busy for me and I’ve been working and skating when I can!
So for some updates:
I’m cleared to scrimmage! In our league, we break down the Minimum Skills Requirements, and your tape color on your helmet reflects your level. Red means you can skate, but haven’t passed a ton of skills. Purple means you’ve passed one side of the paper sheet of MSRs, and once you clear all of them, you’re green!
I went green one week before my Derbyversary, and just in time to play with (and get my ass kicked by) the more advanced skaters at my first public scrimmage. (GIF of the only time I opted to jam above. I’m definitely a blocker.)
Being cleared to scrimmage, I’m allowed to pick a number. I chose 702 because it wasn’t already taken, and because it’s the area code from home, Las Vegas.
Wreckers, fuck yeah!
Today, I completed my first 27/5!
As you may [or may not] know, one of the Minimum Skills Requirements in Roller Derby is to be able to skate 27 laps in 5 minutes or less. It measures to be about a mile in all, depending on how you skate the pattern. I tried for the first time the second week in January, and I was able to do 24 laps. I loosened my trucks a little bit after that and have just been going to practices normally.
Today, only 3 of us showed up for “practice”- but it was basically open track time. So I asked the girls if they minded if I attempted a 27/5 and they didn’t, so I went for it. I did 28 laps! Then collapsed into the center of the track with 10 seconds to spare.
Six months ago, I laced quad skates onto my feet for the first time, EVER, and today I completed something I’ve been SO nervous of since I started! I’ve still got a long way to go with skating, but I’m a little proud of myself.
Did you know...
that in a 2 hour Derby practice, you can burn 1000 calories or more?
I wore my heart rate monitor for several practices, and depending on the coach and the focus, I’ve burned from 1000-1290 calories in the two hours!
“So, what are you, like, alternative now?” “Alternative to what?”

Feel free to print these off for your teammates and favorite Derby Girls!
I’m a week late, but these are ADORABLE.
Also, in the time I disappeared I went from like 5 to 75 (!!) followers-- so hello wonderful people! I’m glad you’re here for the derby journey. Feel free to chat about whatever your Derby journey is with me because I’m sure I’ve been there, or I will be!
Updates!
Wow, so it’s been a while since I logged on here- sorry derby peeps! At the beginning of January I tested out of Derby 101 and into Skills & Drills. Meaning I can now go to multiple practices a week, engage more in hits, and attempt to do ALL THE THINGS. Since I’m still “red” I have to clear some skills to engage in more contact, and then even more skills before I can go full contact.
My first Skills & Drills practice was TERRIFYING. I was confident I could do (or at lease try) the things, but there were so many women on the track! 101 wasn’t that big usually, and S&D was like 30 people at least. But it was great.
I’ve challenged myself to try things at practices, and realized I can jump (!?!) so I cleared that skill. But that was honestly terrifying in my head, but not as much in reality. Once you get skating, jumping just happens. I pretended there were children falling in front of me so I was sure to jump.
But really, Derby is great. I love it. I can’t wait to try all the things and eventually be able to scrimmage! My goal it to be able to do that by fall, and June at the very earliest. But I don’t want to push it too much. Also, I’m on track for my derby name! Still have a few months of volunteering and practicing- but once it happens, you’ll all know about it.
