i really love that project hail mary made it so clear how much grace loves earth. describing it to rocky, showing him bits of the culture and nature. the water and the cities. the birds. he sincerely and deeply loves earth.
you don't even have a dog. he had a whole planet. he loved being alive on earth and they took that from him.
guy who didn't ask for any of this of all time
This is peak nerd internal monologue right here
one thing from project hail mary the book that i really wish theyd made clear in the movie is that when grace makes the decision to save rocky instead of go back to earth, he is prepared to die. like i understand why the movie had to cut a lot from the book for pacing and it wasnt exactly necessary to include the whole sub-subplot where rocky and grace figure out that there is nothing on erid that is safe for humans to consume, but it would have been worth a passing mention at some point, because grace goes back for rocky knowing that even if rocky takes him to erid, he will still die there, because there is nothing he can eat. the only reason he survives is by eating taumoeba, which is a solution rocky comes up with only after grace saves him and admits to him that he came to his rescue fully prepared to die.
the movie really breezes past rocky's rescue and the time skip, and it never explains why choosing to save rocky is so monumental in the first place: it answers the central question grace is grappling with for the whole movie. "who would i die for?" he doesn't just go back for rocky because it's the right thing to do. he sacrifices himself to save rocky. he is ready to die if it means rocky will live.
The glory of Lockwood and Co is you have these ghostly monstrosities that can kill with a touch, vs a band of teenagers with the planning skills of your average DnD party.
You know the skull thatās started whispering forbidden secrets into our one teammateās ear? Letās smuggle it into a haunted mansion, it could help us win a bet!
Its actually so important to me that Ryland Grace is a teacher. Not a professor, not someone at the top of their field teaching the smartest people, but a middle school science teacher. Of course he figured out how to communicate with an alien in under a day. His main expertise is explaining complex subjects to a group that doesnt have the vocabulary or context to fully understand them. He knows exactly how to simplify things down to its core principles without sacrificing any of the scientific logic. And he knows how to do it without having to throw around hyperspecific terminology.
I canāt stop thinking about The Great Divide (album) and how several of its songs are Lockwood & Co coded. like Doors is basically Lockwoodās theme song, Staying Still has MAJOR locklyle vibes (shoutout to my sister for pointing it out), and dare I sayā¦The Great Divide makes me think about Kipps and Lockwood (if we go with the theory that Kipps was friends with Jessica and thus was there to see how Lockwood changed over time). Also Iāve been forming a Lucy animatic for Dashboard in my mind lowkey Iām going crazy over this-
they make me sick
Two of Us
so iāve been reading the book.
