Life Story
Thinking about Grace eventually setting up a communication line on Erid. Going into Mary one last time and flipping on the recording. "I don't know if this will reach Earth while everyone I knew was alive. But I want you to know I'm not only alive, but that I'm okay! I have friends and family and... I've made a life here". He looks away from the camera and hums some kind of melody to himself. This isn't the Ryland Grace everyone knew. He's covered in gems and mesh and speaks with a strange up-and-down tone to his voice, almost like he's singing to a song no one else can hear.
"I forgive you." He says finally. "I will never return to Earth. I will never know if this reaches you. But I forgive you... You did murder someone that day. But... a new man was born out of it. I think I... I think I like him a lot more."
He adjusts the earrings he wears, now, "For all of my students, all of you -- every single one I've taught. I'm proud of you. You made me the man I am today, and I remember each and every one of you. You're going to do great things -- if you haven't already"
"Dr. Ryland Grace, signing off."
[End Recording]
Eva Stratt is in her 80s by the time this recording reaches their planet. She had been fighting to keep the connection up. She spouted many reasons, but everyone knew why. Just in case he was alive. Just in case he would return. Just in case. Just in case. Just in case.
He's not returning.
She can't bare the thought of taking them down now.
Was lucky today being able to watch a dipper dip for quite a while. Such a cute bird.
When an archer is shooting for fun He has all his skill. If he shoots for a brass buckle He is already nervous. If he shoots for a prize of gold He goes blind Or sees two targets – He is out of his mind.
His skill has not changed, But the prize divides him. He cares He thinks more of winning Than of shooting – And the need to win Drains him of power.

What I’d give for one of the Cinderella remakes to go into how when you’re in an isolated and abusive situation, sometimes you need to be saved and you’re not weak if you can’t escape by yourself
I’ve never been a fan of bad faith reinterpretations of fairy tales, especially ones which flatten the originals into “princesses is saved by a prince and nothing else”, to then go #girlboss. The princess can save herself because she’s a strong female character! (Implying if you’re in a bad situation, it’s because you’re not strong enough to get out)
Also the concept of the Prince over the course of like… a couple hours hanging out with Cinderella going from ‘Haha nice I really like you’ to ‘oh fuck i can tell from context clues alone that your home situation is FUCKED UP’ it’s good shit ‘I have just met you but ON GOD I’m gonna get you out of there beautiful mystery woman’ cinderella makes desperately yelling into the night ‘how can I find you again!??!’ when she’s taking off that much more poignant really
He’s been trained to read the room. To read the context clues. To read politics and scheming and planning and people. He’s a Prince, it’s either that or accidentally drink poison by age 15. And he reads her and …
She’s impossibly wealthy. The dress isn’t a fabric he can recognize, but it’s beaded with cut diamonds, faintly milky opals that shimmer with a rainbow, little pale aquamarines, and somewhere are little bells gently ringing with each step - he’s a Prince and he can’t afford to dress like that. The slippers ring too … there is nothing like that crafted by the hands of humans. That’s fairy stuff. She has an in with them that eclipses royal politics. She is powerful in the Old Ways.
All this wraps around the poorest woman he’s ever seen in his entire life, and he’s seen some very, very, poor people in his time.
Poor in money, but poor in “oh you poor thing!” as well. This is someone who has been robbed blind. This is someone who carried themselves waiting for the lash, for a browbeating, for harsh, cruel, abrupt, punishment.
He expects her to be haughty, or hard, or meek or… something else… but she’s just nice. She’s just … nice.
The rigid posture comes out of his back, his tongue unsticks. She’s like sitting by the embers of a low, calm, fire. He feels warmed and rested simply speaking to her. He wonders if it’s magic, and it might be, but if it is it is magic that is her own.
And that terrifies him, because he’s trained to see these things and he knows someone with a cruel hand is waiting to douse her, and snuff her, and beat the last glimmer out of her shining eyes - eyes that put that dress to shame and and and and… she’s gone.
Oh god, she’s gone. It will be all over her sweet, kind, warm face that she transgressed and … oh god they’ll kill her, whoever they are. This will embarrass them and if there’s anything he knows, it’s that you don’t humiliate someone who has power over you and walk away unscathed.
And all he has is a fairy slipper that will only ever fit her foot (it’s not merely shoe size, it’s a kind of spiritual fit as well), and the vain hope that he can keep such a bright light from burning out. It doesn’t even touch his heart that what he’s feeling is a kind of pure philia, not until it enraptures him soul to bones, all at once. Oh god, oh no, oh shit… he’s reached well above his station, but…he can try to be good and worthy.
The way he sees it, sometimes even the strongest people can be brought low and need just… a little help. She had enough in her to do whatever she had to do to free herself of those evil relations if she had to, but she shouldn’t have to. There’s no glory in blood. Sometimes it’s okay for the ending to be happily ever after.
Imagine being the 2nd most powerful person in the Kingdom. You could save her, you can save her, you have more than enough power and you’re not used to being helpless like this, but this time there’s nothing you can do solely because you don’t know who she is or where she went
nolan’s odyssey is such a textbook study on the idiocy and dangers of presentism. yes of course penelope is a modern day feminist who wants to rule ithaca by herself. they make telemachus say that GREECE IS THE GREATEST CIVILIZATION IN THE WORLD as if the entire point of the massing of achaeans at troy for one unified cause isn’t spectacular precisely because THERE IS NO CONCEPT OF A UNIFIED GREECE NATIONS DO NOT EXISTTTTTT YETTTTT. literally 101 on historical writing is making sure that you’re avoiding strict periodization because the people living in a “period” will not identify themselves that way. ever. five million cheeky nods to “the sea peoples” but we’re being cute and coy and calling them “the people from the sea.” the obsession with xenia but refusal to call it xenia yes let’s say “zeus’s law” a hundred times and reduce it to the literal expectation that any stranger could be a god in disguise. how was penelope just hanging out in the main hall of the palace with her husband’s dinner guests while they were playing with weapons with her HAIR COMPLETELY DOWN no veil no nothing just chilling casually. comical. stoppppp making movies that engage in historical viewpoints if you’re going to slather a modernized coat of paint over the top. “the past is a foreign country, they do things differently there.” or fucking whatever.

Huh, didn’t know Ryland Grace came in cat mode!
Hello! I loved your post about which clothes a Bronze Age and a Classical Period Telemachus would wear in a more accurate take on Nolan's Odyssey, and I was intrigued by this new still from the movie.
I found the art direction to be once again very odd, especially the long sleeves, which look more like modern sweatshirts. But that made me wonder, which garments should Menelaus and Telemachus be wearing for a hunting trip? Would a simple chiton, a chlamys, and a petasos hat be the norm, like in this vase? As noblemen, would they have specific hunting gear?
At this point I feel like I’ve talked myself half to death about Nolan’s Odyssey. The visuals are quite frankly unforgivable, not just from any metric of historicity but in terms of any sort of character or costume design in general. Pretending like this movie doesn’t exist is the only thing that seems to quell my rage.
But let’s talk about hunting garb!
Long story short, noblemen probably wore the same sort of gear hunting as anybody else, save for maybe of a slightly finer quality. I believe physical ornamentation was considered to be feminine, at least post-Bronze Age, so any sort of needless embellishment might have taken away from the masculinity of the wearer’s character and prowess as a hunter.
Moreover, in depictions of hunting, we see that some if not all men are nude. This may just be an artistic convention, but given the climate of the region, potential damage to clothing (which was time consuming and costly to make), and the level of flexibility nudity allowed, it isn’t inconceivable to imagine this was done. Not to mention, many if not all athletic activities were also undertaken in the nude, so why not hunting? However, for the purpose of SFW artistic interpretation, having men dress in a short tunic with a chlamys and petasos with some sturdy sandals would be more than appropriate.
If we’re looking at Bronze Age sources, hunters seemed to have worn short tunics.
It’s also worth mentioning that @kyleesarthell did a pretty great job redrawing the screenshot in a more historical style.

ohhh my god I just fact-checked, Nolan actually DID cut the "Nobody" scene from his Odyssey movie. Mfer that is like cutting the Father reveal from Star Wars. Let me speak in a language you understand this is like not dressing Batman up in his suit. "It was not possible to work it in" the TikTok musical with a budget of $4 and a scratched Hamilton CD managed to work it in in SONG form, step up your FUCKING GAME
