Hey I wanna talk about this.

I work at a drug addiction counseling center. A ton of my clients have, at one time or another, sold their food stamps. This is basically exactly what the GOP is afraid of, right? Drug addicts selling their food stamps.

I have learned, now, to ask them WHY they sold their food stamps. Here is an incomplete list of the answers:

- I need tampons, and you can’t buy them with foodstamps

- See above RE: toilet paper

- I was living in a hotel with no kitchen then. I had to buy pre-prepared food

- The homeless shelter won’t let me keep food in my locker or room, so I have to buy pre-prepared food (Yes, really)

- I had to make rent

- My sister had to make rent

- My son had to make rent

- I needed co-pays to get my medication or I’ll die

- I needed co-pays to get my medication or I’ll loose control of my mental health

But the absolute most common form of food stamp fraud I see? Giving away food stamps to other family members who get no food stamps or insufficient food stamps to feed their families. I see that every month. People glassy eyed and hungry because they gave away their food to their adult kids, their grand kids, cousins, siblings etc.

So, is food stamp fraud rampant? In some places, yes. And I’m not about to chastise people for it.

You can not buy dish soap with food stamps. Or laundry detergent. Or body soap. Or tampons. Or toilet paper.

But you can buy some expensive canned or dry good, and then take it back to the store to exchange, and say you lost the receipt but store credit is fine. And then you can buy toilet paper. And if you think that’s a individual problem rather than an indictment of capitalism as a whole, you’re a terrible person and need to get the fuck off my blog.

You can’t get diapers with food stamps, either. And I’ve heard a few accounts from people with babies that needed specific formula due to allergies where formula is “covered,” but only specific brands, so they had to choose between “bus fare to work” and “something that won’t kill my child.”

Going to comment on this with some actual reality that I’m sure some people won’t want to hear but - sometimes? Addicts fucking buy their drug dealers groceries in exchange for drugs. That’s the real shit of it. How do I know this? Because when I use to use, I knew multiple people who did this. This is an actual reality, and is real food stamp fraud. And it’s great that y’all got all of these excuses about addicts committing food stamp fraud for all these lovely reasons and I’m with that, but for real - addicts trade groceries for drugs. And the other reality of it that people won’t to hear - an addict who burns half their card getting groceries for their dealer in exchange for gear? Still deserves to fucking eat. They’re human beings who can still reintegrate into normal society and be functional again, and they (like any of us, because we’re all fucking people) deserve to be carried by the community in a time of need until they find themselves again. Like, I totally get that there is flaws in the system and we need to consider that people use workarounds to manage those flaws in the system, that’s great to discuss - but let’s also not delude ourselves or water down our own arguments by creating some alternate reality. Despite the reality of food stamp fraud, that doesn’t mean that food stamps should be discontinued, nor does it mean that addicts should be declined aid they so desperately need. It is 100% ok to say that drug addicts have drug seeking tendencies, and do things to satisfy their addictions. It is also 100% ok to recognize that addicts are still human beings deserving of their basic needs being met at a time when they cannot meet those needs by themselves. You’re allowed to recognize that someone is both a drug addict and a human being, and that one aspect of their personhood does not negate the other.
