Whatâs the worst history book youâve ever read?
I read Chariots of the Gods by Erich von Daniken a long time ago. Ya know that wanker and con man who started all this ancient aliens bullshit where aliens were responsible for building all the great ancient monuments of the world except the ones white people built. What a load of horse puckey! A lot of his claims are based on his interpretation of ancient Sumerian texts even though he has no background in ancient Sumerian cuneiform and there is no evidence that he knows fuckall how to read and interpret Sumerian cuneiform anymore than I know how to interpret Rapa Nui. And he single handidly opened a Pandora's box of pseudohistory bullshit all because of that one book.
Just so you all know Erich von Daniken was a lifelong con man and huckster. Until his book sales made him wealthy, he was constantly being prosecuted and did prison time for fraud, forgery, embezzlement, falsifying records to take out loans, and jewelry theft. His second book was written while in an Austrian prison. Here's a photo of him from 1969 where he was just released from a Swiss prison only to be taken into custody by Austrian authorities to be prosecuted for crimes in Austria.
So if you're all into this ancient aliens bullshit I would take this into account when it comes to Erich von Daniken's credibility.
This book will be essential reading for anyone studying Byzantine history in this period. It ranges in time from the death of the emperor Basil II in 1025 to the sacking of the city of Constantinople by the Fourth Crusaders in 1204, spanning the rise and fall of the successful Komnenos dynasty. Eleventh-century Byzantine history is unusual in that imperial women were able to wield immense power and in this ground-breaking book Dr Hill explores why this was possible and, equally, why they lost their position of influence a century later.
Why does this book have this cover? Why? Why why why why?
A book about women, written by a woman...sure, of course let's put a man on the cover
Bloopers are movie aftercare and itâs fucked up that we got rid of them
the meaning of life? is to make your bedroom as comfy as possible. that's it that's the purpose
the secondary purpose is to equip your kitchen and get really really really into international cuisine
What even is cave diving?
You find a cave that's underwater, don scuba gear, and then dive in the cave. If you get stuck, injured, lost, break your gear, run out of oxygen, encounter a gas bubble that makes you temporarily insane, the guideline to the cave opening breaks or comes loose, or anything unexpected that you didn't account for happens, you get to spend your final moments with an absolute certainty that you are going to die.
gas bubbles that make you temporarily insane don't exist, and properly trained cave divers are prepared for pretty much whatever
cave diving perfectly safe! cave diving safe and fun! cave so pretty! look at pretty cave! awaaaaaw! get in cave! wet!

so the synopsis of The Ring is: you will die 7 days after watching this videotape. my question is does that apply to rewatching the tape. let's say I watch the tape, wait 6 days, and watch it again. does the timer reset to 7 days? can I do this indefinitely? can I become functionally immortal by watching the evil videotape on a weekly basis?
I require the film where someone decides this means they are functionally immortal for 6 days after watching the tape so seeks it out before going on a series of utterly batshit suicide missions. The tape keeps trying to do creepy crap around them and they're just like "I have 3 days 12 hours left to do this prison break so you're not even on my top 10 concerns, either distract this guard for me or go do something about that hair while you're waiting"
The ghost is so baffled and has no idea how to explain that's not how any of this works that it does save them a couple times while trying to get this across, thus convincing them the theory has been validated
I watched the movie Heavyweights again because itâs a childhood favorite and itâs honestly kind of amazing how anti fatphobic it is for a 90âs movie about a fat camp. Like itâs got some negative stuff in it like the idea theyâre all hoarding candy and snacks and theyâre all bad at sports. But nonetheless the whole point is that the fat kids are the heroes and the villain is a crazy, fitness obsessed proto-influencer whoâs trying to make these kids skinny by torturing them. You have a nurse saying âhey starving and torturing kids is bad for them and doesnât help their health.â
None of the kids lose weight by the end! The main message is that whatâs important is having confidence and standing up for yourself and not letting people treat you like crap just because youâre fat. Eat good food and engage in movement because it feels good and makes you feel better.
During the relay race at the end, the fat kids still struggle with a lot of the physical obstacle course tasks because yeah, those can be difficult in a larger body. But they do succeed at lots of the other tasks!
Idk, I was just pleasantly surprised at how well it held up considering the premise.
aw really?! I gotta add that to my list. I had heard of it but always assumed it would be punching down. Iâm sure I would love it

what they donât show in the cool mermaid movies is that when you go behind a waterfall yes it is very relaxing and chill but itâs also the loudest place imaginable.
So every year, my aquarium does a captive lobster hatchery project (hence all the loblings). The reason weâre doing it is because in the wild, loblings only have a 1 in 25,000 chance of surviving their larval phase. Theyâre plankton as babies and everything eats them. Additionally, as the Gulf of Maine warms, they are having even lower survival rates because the blooms of copepods they feed on as babies are happening earlier in the year, and theyâre missing it.
Obviously, the goal of this experiment is to grow the lobsters until theyâre big enough to settle to the seabed and then release them, because they have a much higher likelihood of surviving to adulthood when theyâre able to hide. Ideally, captive lobster hatcheries can boost the wild population and keep things stable, so we donât have a major crash in a decade or two.
The first year we tried this was pretty bad. We had a lot of eggs, but very few babies. It turned out that the CO2 levels in the building spiked as more guests visited throughout the summer, and that settled into the water and threw off the pH and caused a chemical reaction that prevented a lot of the eggs from hatching. I think we ended up releasing three baby lobsters (which is still better than their wild survival rate but not great).
The second year was a little better. We added a de-gasser to the aquarium and got a ton of larval lobsters, but right as they were settling to the bottom we had a disease outbreak that killed most of them. We ended up releasing four babies at the end of the season.
But this year? Oh boy. We have so many lobsters that we had to release the first round early (usually we wait till September or October so guests can see them). We just released a total of FIVE HUNDRED AND TWENTY FIVE baby lobsters, and we still have over a hundred who havenât settled to the bottom yet. I genuinely donât even have words to explain how cool this is. OVER FIVE HUNDRED. We just added hundreds of lobsters to the wild population that wouldnât have been there otherwise.
Conservation is so fucken sick
