this is so funny bc in Finland barista asking randomly “got any plans today?” would be generally considered weird and even creepy. Like seriously why would you ask strangers that? You only want to buy coffee why would you exchange any private information like your plans or how are you feeling. These questions are not universally “polite” bc in some cultures like here these are considered private questions reserved for only people you actually know. A cashier would never ask me here “How are you?” bc here the meaning is more like “how is your mental/physical health status?”. People don’t ask that unless they actually want to know the real answer. And lying “I’m fine, thanks” and the general pretending for appearances sake is very exhausting and pointless in a long run. Strangers don’t need to know that stuff. it’s generally better to talk about something less personal like the weather, football game etc than to pretend.

it’s also a lot easier for the person working in the customer service when you don’t need to pretend to be anybody’s friend. Just being polite is enough.

I want the barista to ask for my coffee order, and for the entire transaction to go smoothly. No talking necessary beyond the questions that are directly relevant to how I would like my coffee prepared today.

That's what I mean by "I hate small talk". I hate being expected to perform "friendship" in circumstances where we all know it's fake. I'm here to get coffee. You're here because your job is taking coffee orders. We need to interact civilly and politely with mutual basic respect, but we don't need to pretend we know each other well enough to care what our respective plans are beyond the brief interaction necessary for me to acquire coffee by giving you money.

You don't need to say "got any plans today" OR replace it with anything. You can just leave that conversational slot blank. It's not necessary to this interaction.

People who love unnecessary small talk when they realize it's possible to in fact simply not say anything at all:

except some customer service employees are literally *told* to do this small talk. when I first got hired at my last job they gave a whole fucking presentation on Being Nice To Customers. so we aren't actually trying to be creepy or annoy anyone. of course this depends on where you live. i'm in the US and customer service is the overly friendly type because it's part of the job. I WISH I could do my job without faking my emotions, believe me...
