Ya know, back in the day, when I was like 10-12 and a huge fan of Tmnt 2012, Mikey was my very favorite. I would always go like:"He's just like me fr, we could be twins!" And would laugh at his antics and pranks and the like.
And now, having returned to the fandom after years and getting back to watching the show, I started realizing that Mikey is goddamn annoying to me at times.
(This is NOT Mikey slander guys, I love him sm.)
But like, now that I'm 20 years old I am realizing, that the other turtles being annoyed by Mikeys antics is fucking valid. Because yeah, he can be such an annoying little shit.
I completely understand why Raph would chase him, yell at him and the like, because let's be honest: I would too. If I knew Mikey in person, I think I would lose my goddamn mind. Same goes for Donnie and his reactions to Mikeys behaviour.š
My 10-11 year old self thought of Mikey as just like her (we were nothing alike funny enough), but now Iāve become a Donnie with some Raph in the mixture, itās so weird to think about at times
The only thing is that I would have way too much patience for him, it would be extremely concerning

Okay, but can we normalize also considering/calling the 2012 turtles "weapons"?
Like, i see so many people saying that the Rise turtles would beat the 2012 turtles in a hand-to-hand combat because they were purposely mutated for war... And i just don't agree with this argument??
The very concept of the 2012 form of ooze/mutagen is that it basically mutates the individual who makes contact with it into something stronger/dangerous, as we can see with literally every mutant in the series.
So, BASICALLY if any live-being makes contact with mutagen it'll turn into a dangerous mutant weapon, intentionally or not, the mutation boosts the individual skills to an extreme, really.
Gosh, there's a literal episode in the 2012 TMNT series where Donatello is hit by a missile and he survives without major injuries, in almost every episode we can see the turtles doing something inhuman like being super fast, holding or doing things that require some kind of super strenght (cof cof Leo holding back Kraang prime with only a chain cof cof), inhuman resistance, and sometimes it even looks like they can regenerate (although i think they just don't have scars for style purposes).
Anyways, i just wanted to say that i don't really agree with this argument and ended up making a little rant about it lmao.
I wish to make a list of their impressive feats of strength and agility.
The thing that made the Rise turtles be specifically so called Weapons of War was exclusively Hamato Yoshi's DNA. And that's what the 12 boys have too. You can try to argue that it could've been anyone's DNA but that point doesn't make sense when you consider how much genes and behaviors the boys share with their father.
Totally! Like, okay, i get it, the Rise turtles are awesome too, but what truly makes the 2012 turtles shine in this situation is that... They don't have mystic powers yet they are this strong! That's what makes it so interesting.
I can't find the post right now because I never bothered to save it like an idiotšbut I came across someone talking about one of Splinter's scenes in New Girl in Town when Leo lets the others handle a mission without him and I wanted to add my two cents.
Yeah, it seems wrong on the surface for Splinter to say Leo wasn't in a position to decide whether or not he should lead the guys, and it also seems unfair for Splinter to say he should bear the responsibility of leadership instead of shirking it off on Raph out of frustration with his brothers and their lack of appreciation or understanding. It especially may make one think Leo should be allowed to throw a tantrum because leading isn't going how he wants it to, and his brothers should see how it feels to function without him.
But that wasn't the point.
The point was that Leo allowed his brothers to walk off into a dangerous situation without guidance simply because he was tired of going back and forth with Raph and his criticisms.
Mikey and Donnie have their moments too, but in this particular episode, they're in the background as they witness another falling out between their leader and the resident hothead of the family. They didn't ask for Raph to take over, and no sooner than later do they realize Raph didn't know what and all he was signing up for when he freezes up in the middle of the fight. Donnie is the one to formulate a quick plan of action as he snaps Raph back to reality and incapacitates Snakeweed long enough for them to make a swift exit from the hideout, while Mikey remains unconscious for nearly the remainder of the episode due to Raph's poor planning.
And I seriously need to stress what exactly Splinter tells Leo: "Leadership is not about being appreciated. It is about responsibility. It doesn't matter that the burden is heavy. It matters that you carry it. Now go find your brothers."
He never said Leo was wrong for seeking appreciation; in fact, his future words and actions support the guys learning to show appreciation to Leo, and Splinter is understanding everytime Leo expresses his distress over being responsible for his brothers when they love making his job more difficult than it needs to be. But he needed Leo to understand that when it came to completing a mission effectively without unnecessarily endangering each other, appreciation holds little importance in the moment. You can't use appreciation as a deciding factor for whether or not you should let the team fall apart because your younger brother stomped his foot at you for the umpteenth time.
Splinter emphasizes that leadership isn't something to be taken lightly, and Leo needs to realize it's not something you can just pass on when you aren't in the mood to hold it.
Now, one can argue that it does matter to some extent that the burden of leadership is heavy and their argument would be valid; they're still kids after all and the burden may gain some pounds depending on the situation. That's why a leader leads a team though, so that the weight of that burden can be shared by the members and their efforts when the leader starts to buckle.
But, once again, Splinter is right. It does matter more that Leo carries that burden, or at least the most weight, because he's the leader. Not only are they at a point where Leo is permanently cemented in place as the leader, and things would undoubtedly be shaken up in an undesired manner should he thrust someone else into that position this far in, but his brothers aren't entirely cut out for leadership. Planning ahead doesn't come easy to Raph, Donnie gets tunnel vision and misses details that would be obvious otherwise, and Mikey doesn't always think his actions through before doing them (a bit of blind faith if you will). That's not to say they can't defy the odds at times, but in the grand scheme of things, they function much better as a team with a leader, and Leo functions much better as a leader with a team.
Team building exercises aside, the way Splinter speaks and phrases things gives the same vibes as a parent telling their child not to make a habit out of something they shouldn't be doing. He was evidently upset with Leo for allowing his frustrations to do the decision making for him, but he specifically wanted Leo to not make this a recurring thing because they won't just fall apart as a team by that point: they'll fall apart as brothers. Giving someone what they want because they irked you into doing it can establish a pattern of behavior that no one wants to deal with the consequences of, and irking someone into giving you what you want isn't something you should do either. It sucks, believe me I know, but Leo shouldn't just let his brothers get their way because he's fed up with them, and Raph shouldn't always get his way because he doesn't agree with Leo's way of doing things.
Doing that creates the opportunity for something bad to happen that could've easily been avoided, similar to letting a child do something you know they should be broken out of before that something becomes a problem in the future.
And Splinter doesn't seem mad when the guys come rushing back to the lair without Leo in tow, he sounds more disappointed than anything. As I mentioned earlier, he knows the others give Leo a hard time and he's aware that leadership is no easy role to be sworn into, but he was hopeful that his earlier lecturing would bring Leo to his senses and his son would prioritize responsibility over running off to only God knows where. He doesn't linger on his earlier conversation with Leo though, he spends a few seconds to scold Raph for instigating this entire mess in the first place. He makes sure Raph is aware of the pressure Leo has on his shoulders, with an underlying warning to not take leadership so lightly again, and orders him to find Leo.
Splinter's 15 second lecture leaves much to be desired and explained (that goes without saying), but the curt ending to it, "Now go find your brothers," says it all: leader or not, the bottom line is that your brothers are out there fighting an enemy without your help. Go find them and ensure their safety.
So I saw your recent post about a new risex2012 fic and you talked about The Fight for Mikey and most of it I agree with, but what do you mean when you say they nerfed the 2012 folks? Rise folks are all āweapons of warā or āliteral adultā or āchild of the apocalypseā; not to mention the literal magic and home terf advantage. It makes sense imo that 2012 struggles to take em down. And I would have asked this in the replies of the post, but for some gosh-darn reason that function of this beautiful hellste hasnāt worked for me for months soā¦ š
That's exactly what I mean. Just using these explanations and going ahead with saying it makes sense without thinking about all the skills and advantages the 2012 could have is basically nerfing then whether one admits it or not. It Does Not make sense by simply using these particular words. That is nerfing, period.
P.S. The Rise turtles aren't programmed robots or had their DNA strands manually and painstakingly altered by putting abilities and functions in them or something. Neither were they artificially created like Shadow. They were mutated. They were different from Yokai because they weren't yokai but rather hybrids of two different species. What makes them the so-called "weapons of war" was Lou Jitsu's DNA. That's CANON! Draxum said so. And you know what? The 2012 turtles have it too. And before anyone starts with "They were accidents, it could've been anyone else's DNA" Na uh uh! Let me stop you right there. If that were the case, why would Raphael have inherited Splinter's anger, Donnie his eyes, Leo his dedication and skills and Mikey his humor and natural talent? 2012 turtles also have a highly skilled ninja master's DNA belonging to the Hamato Lineage.
The 2012 crew isn't in any way weak like that. Nerfing them for laughs and giggles and bashing their family dynamic and everything and proceeding to completely wipe out their character development and experiences just to write Rise being better and saying "They were weapons of war, it makes sense" is absolutely wrong. That's nerfing And bashing to it's extreme, especially when the individual talents and skills and experiences and a lifetime of training isn't taken into consideration.
I analysed a lot of counter explanations to these claims out of pure spite whenever my favorite boys are done dirty
I'm not saying Rise crew wouldn't be powerful, just that the 2012 would be just as powerful too, in their own way.
Okay so Iām only kind of into Rottmnt and tmnt 2012, but I came across some old discourse and so I wanted to share my opinion no one asked for lol
Basically a lot of fans argue that the Rise turtles would be more powerful or better fighters then the other continuities, because they were created to be great warriors and were able to become heroes even without a lot of training, with the addition of their ninpo which allows them to basically have magic. However, I disagree. (Explanation under the cut)
In martial arts movies and anime, one thing that is repeated a lot is that martial arts technique, skill, and training, always overcomes raw power. Dragon Ball Z shows this brilliantly in its early arcs - Goku fought warriors from other planets who had superior power used power levels as a way of determining strength, but beat their asses because he was a better fighter in martial arts technique and trained more. He wasnāt more powerful, but instead put in the work to be a better fighter.
So the way I see it, turtles like the TMNT 2012 (or almost any other continuity really) would be overall better fighters than the ROTTMNT turtles. It wouldnāt be EASY, and they definitely wouldnāt win the first time they fight since they donāt know what theyāre going up against, but they trump the ROTTMNT turtles with sheer experience, skill, and training. Itās shown in the 2012 show that they put effort every day into their skills by training against one another and learning new skills, and it takes April a long time before she even starts approaching the turtles in skill, and they have fought (and beaten) magical/more powerful opponents before.
Meanwhile the Rottmnt turtles have much more situational skill, and their ninpo helps a lot, but are shown that their training is much less rigorous and that they often win because of their enemies having a weakness or some other outside advantage rather than overcoming them on their own. Itās why the finale hits so hard, they are out of other options and need to tap into their own inner power to win. Iām not saying wither show is better or worse for this, just how I see it and how writing conventions of both shows would play into this.
The Rottmnt turtles would go into this overconfident and loose, to comedic effect, while the 2012 turtles tend to be under confident and win by using their skills and teamwork.
Also the whole ROTTMNT vs TMNT 2012 ārivalryā is dumb and I hate it (and was why I left the fandom, it just became too common to see in fanfic and got really toxic). Just let them be friends after beating eachother up like every other action show crossover.
Research shows that 78% of the āPoor Mikeyā fanclub claims that Mikey is incapable of standing up for himself, whether that be because he fears further abuse, fears his brothers in general, suffers from intense depression, an abuse sort of conditioning, or *insert other incredulous views here* (Statistics may not be entirely accurate and should be used with caution).
Unfortunately for them, Mikey does knows how to stand up for himself and it has been shown that he can speak his mind to even the main abuser, Raphael, and walk away unscathed.
Astonishing claim, I know, but the facts prove themselves.
Mikey has brought up beliefs on several occasions, but his lack of awareness outside his own mind often disproves his own claims.
Years of leprechauns, cream cheese demons, and certainty in cupcake uprisings have worn down his brothersā trust in his word on many different subjects. This is not his brothers ignoring him out of spite. This is merely because he has proven himself to be an unreliable source when it comes to reality.
His lack of interest in taking most battles and training sessions seriously grate on his brothersā nerves and often lead them to doubt his prowess and abilities on the field. Mikey being the youngest and earning all of their must protect with life instincts doesnāt exactly help his case. He knowingly brings much of their wrath upon himself- with tauntings, and purposefully infuriating acts, and the constant reappearance of Dr. Prankenstein.
When Mikey doesnāt go gun-hoe or call Raph out for a whack on the head, itās probably because heās conscious enough to know he likely said/did something stupid, or because he purposefully did something annoying.
However, if he sees an injustice affect another by his brothersā hand, he will be the first one to stand up and correct it.
Mikey is proven to be more likely to speak his mind when it comes to others around him getting retribution that he deems underserved.
IN FACT, a few of the only times fans actually see an aggressive argument/challenge poised to a brother is to Raphael, often in regards to his crass judgement.
Take Fourfold Trap as an example:

āDonāt say that, dude!ā
Mikey shoves at Raphās shoulder to make him face him and they both begin yelling/bickering/roughly gesturing. Mikey is in no way scared of how Raph will react to this and is immediate in getting physically aggressive and speaking his mind.
Not normally how someone whoās been abused all their life would act towards the main abuser, I think. Not convincing enough?
Well, The Curse of Savanti Romero is another:
In it, Renet is seen admitting to her mistake of letting Romero loose. Raph responds by immediately coming down on her for it, even though she understands and regrets her mistake.
Mikey has zero hesitations about jumping into the picture.
āYou really are the worst time traveler ever! The worst!ā
āBack off, bro! She needs our help!ā
Psychology of most abusers would not point to this kind of situation going well. If this were the case- in no universe would Raphael have relented under his brotherās glare and stepped away, especially not after being shoved and yelled at in front of someone outside the family. That would be seen as a calling for punishment.
Moving away would be letting the abused assert dominance and think that theyāve gotten away with a win.
If this were really an abusive relationship, then Raphael would have had a far more violent reaction to his youngest brother butting in.
Instead, he growled, glared, and then relented. He could tell this was not an issue that could be further challenged. Mikey was standing his ground, intensely meeting his glare, and so Raph stepped away.
Now, have there been times where Mikey felt like he was left out or being ignored and that made him feel insecure?
Yes. Absolutely. Mikey Gets Shellacne is a prime example.
But, have the abusers, his older brothers, been made to share similar feelings of being unable to rely on their brothers at one time or another? Perhaps due to his direct or indirect actions? Why, yes.
Because, as hard as it is to believe, every person in that family has made mistakes when dealing with another family member. Relationships are hard. Not one person, or mutant, is perfect, and facing or accepting insecurities is always a fact of growing up.
Is this to say Mikey never stands up for himself?
No. Not even close.
Is it ever portrayed as something big and dramatic as a focal point of an episode? No. Because it doesnāt need to be.
If Mikey holding onto resentment and depression from how his brother abuse him was meant to be part of his character, it would have been a plot point in the episode where theyāre literally in his brain. There would have been the slightest hint of something going on somewhere in that chaotic realm.
Instead, Mikeyās brain welcomed all of his brother with open arms.
And the true, inner Mikey runs ecstatically toward his brothers and into Leoās open arms for snuggles, no more scared of his brothers inside his mind than outside of it.
The only time that he has thoughts of āmy brothers are so mean to me I should run awayā is the episode The Croaking, where he takes accountability and has the realization that his brothers arenāt the jerks that he thought they were when he ran offā¦
āDude. Your brothers sound awesome.ā
āYeah. They areā¦ Even after I trashed the house.ā
Mikey doesnāt often react violently to his brotherās teasing because thereās not a reason too. He understands that his brotherās pick on him, but in reality, he picks on them too. Itās not a big enough deal to point out unless an evil planet is letting Angry Mikey consume all of his thoughts and then everything is terrible.
Mikey can stand up for himself. Mikey will always stand up for others.

Various pieces of information from the Rise Q&A back in February
It was revealed that there are other Hidden Cities other than the one seen in Rise & there had been plans for the Turtles to visit the Hidden City beneath Tokyo.
2. Splinter was able to use Leo's mystic odachi so easily due to the fact that Splinter had spent a lot of time in the Hidden City & because of this Splinter has a great deal of mystic knowledge, with Splinter also having developed his mystic abilities but he has stopped using those abilities until the events of the series.
3. More information was given about the missing Turtle Siblings & it was stated the Frida, Big Mama's Assistant would have most likely joined her brothers during the future timeline, it was also stated that the other missing Turtle Sibling would have possibly been named Camille after Camille Claudel.
4. When asked on how a Dungeons & Dragons episode would go it was stated that April would be the DM, Raph would be a fighter class, Mikey would be an illusionist, Leo would be an assassin or their & Donnie would insist on being a scientist since he's sure that there was 'at least one sensible person back then'.
5. The Rise version of Renet could have possibly been used to explore different timelines that might have happened if certain events in the movie had happened differently.
6. After the events of the movie Casey is traveling around the world fighting remnants of the Krang & the Foot Clan.
7. When asked about the Turtles relationship with Draxum it was stated that in contrast to Mikey who accepted Draxum the most easily Leo is the most skeptical however it was also stated that Leo would have eventually 'gotten over' his grudge towards Draxum as there were multiple scrapped episodes planned where Leo & Draxum would have been forced to work together.
8. There were plans for the Turtles to eventually go to the Krang's original dimension meaning that it would have been likely for the Turtles to encounter the traditional dimension X/Z stuff such as the Neutrinos.
9. When asked about Casey Juniors relationship with the past/ present version of Leo it was stated that despite it being slightly different due to them being around the same age now Casey Junior can't help but still view Leo as a father figure.
10. It was stated that Splinter has never celebrated the Turtle's Birthdays in the past due to it being to closely related to his negative feelings towards his own mutation however it was also stated that after Splinter's development in the series he would start celebrating the Turtle's Birthday with them.
11. The reason that the Future Version of Leonardo was the one who raised Casey Junior it was stated that it was due to the fact that the Future Version of Leonardo had a special affinity for Casey Junior & also felt particularly responsible for Casey Junior after his mother was gone.
12. When asked what the Rise version of Miyamoto Usagi would have been like it was revealed that a possible plan for Usagi was that his home dimension would have been overrun by the Krang causing Usagi to travel to the Turtles dimension for help due to them being the only one who have ever defeated the Krang.
13. When discussing crossovers between TMNT iterations it was stated that a crossover between Rise & the 1987 cartoon or the 2003 cartoon would have been a possibility due to them also being 2D animated series.
14. April & Sunita were planned to have more 'girls night' episodes together.
It was also stated that Casey would have possibly have developed a dynamic would both April & Sunita so there is a possibility that Casey would have been included in the 'girls night' episodes with April & Sunita as well.
Thinking about how at the end of season one in tmnt 2012 Splinter kinda implied that Leo may have to sacrifice himself or someone else to save the world from the krang and then he did sacrifice himself, but then at the end of season one of rottmmt Splinter literally gave up the helmet to the Shredder armor so that he could save his sons
According to the Lou Jitsu dÅjÅ pamphlet, Lou Jitsu's fighting style is made up of jujutsu, judo, boxing, wrestling, kung-fu, karate, aikido & meditation which possibly means that considering that Splinter trained them those also possibly make up April & the Turtle's fighting styles as well.

Unfamiliar familiar is not just a fic, it is a harmful representation of tmnt 2012.
Infantilizing Mikey who canonically has ADHD, and then going ahead and giving him autism, rubbing salt even further into the wound. As an autistic person, it is absolutely disgusting seeing one of my favorite characters be broken down and destroyed by an in educated idiot, who obviously does not care about the 2012 tmnt characterization or the fact that they have pretty much ruined the tmnt 2012 AO3 tag for so many fans, including myself.
They had a big hand in the creation of the āabused Mikeyā trope, which is an absolutely horrible characterization of 12 Mikey and his brothers.
It is harmful by villainizing Raphs anger issues, infantilizing ADHD and autism, not tagging the fic as an AU, as it is so OOC and completely destroys everything Tmnt is about.
Family, the turtles being brothers, being strong and stealthy ninjas. If Mikey couldnāt handle a bit of roughhousing, how would he have gotten through 15 years of ninja training!?
If torable actually watched the damn show all the way to the end, then it would become apparent that Raph goes through character development the most. He changes, is calmer, less aggressive, heās happier more at ease, because heās found people in his life who understand and love him for who he is. The change isnāt a flick of a switch, itās a gradual change over the seasons. Raph is so much more than an aggressive impulsive idiot.
ADHD and autistic people are misrepresented in media, in absolutely horrible ways, and even when autism is done right, itās always only the one side of the spectrum and never with an actual autistic actor. autism and ADHD do not need to be misrepresented in fanfics as well.
What ever the hell that creature is that torable claims to be Mikey, itās one struggle after another, and adding autism because you just want to infantilize him is abhorrent. Autistic people are not babys who need to be treated like glass, and representing Mikey as that destroys his character and misrepresents autism in a horrible way.
On a video I did on tiktok about āunfamiliar familiarā I got comments from people saying that they know the author IRL and apparently they are ex-friends and torable was abusive towards them, Iām not saying these claims are true, but I got 3 different people comment about that same thingā¦š«¢

I need to add this in but... It feels like this fanfic also has no idea how Mikey acts. While he is often seen as the baby of the family, in reality, Mikey is so much more and is also incredibly bold and brave just like his brothers (especially if you compare his boldness to Leo for example).
This kid did several things just on his own. He created a cure that would cure his brothers and himself from that parasite bug thingy, he went alone to fight Pizza Face and save his family and everyone in New York city completely alone, even while he was hurt he along with Donnie helped to distract and pounce on Slash to help Raph, he actively went on his own to grab something they need to get rid of his mutant spots of some sorts or whatever those were I forgot, he actively did his best to fight off COMPLETELY ALONE Dogpound who is a lot stronger and bigger then him and yet was able to also not be squashed by him, he survived COMPLETELY ALONE FOR POSSIBLY MONTHS in a dimension he never went to and that was his FIRST TIME there, he actively agrees to be the bait for his brothers to attract their enemies or any kind of danger, he managed to get out of the mega Shredder on his own after being eaten, he was obviously there to fight the Supper Shredder as well in the season 4 finale, he fought off again completely alone against Newtralizer who is 10 FEET TALL AND IS AN ALIEN NEWT AND HAS ELECTRICAL POWERS THAT ARE POTENTIALLY STRONGER THEN MIKEY'S, he also managed to kill him and destroy Lord Dregg's ship, he STABBED Dracula in the HEART, he survived all on his own in the mutant apocalypse after him and his bros got seperated for possibly decades, HE DEFEATED LITERAL SATAN AS WELL.
So you mean to tell me Mikey did ALL OF THAT WITH NO PROBLEM and let's not forget just how talented he is. I would be such a pussy to even ATTEMPT ANY OF HIS MOVES and would probably break a bone or something. Well- according to those fanfics and also this one in particular, none of that meant ANYTHING. Because for the sake of Mikey being treated like a baby, they took away all of those traits what even made Mikey. And ya'll keep acting like Mikey is just a party dude who doesn't take training seriously but also acts like a baby. That is COMPLETELY FALSE.
He is energetic, creative, talented, jokester, mischievous, quick to jump into action, laid back, funny, playful, loving, considered the heart of the family, a comfort teddy bear tbh, brave and so much more. And when he is being serious he takes every length to get the job done as fast as possible while making sure his brothers are also safe. And he is honestly really family oriented and even someone said that they see Mikey accepting anyone into the family (got that from his big bro Raph lol). There is so much and I can go on and on on how Mikey is genuinely a complex character. He has a lot of personality in many of his versions. Of course Mikey also has his own problems. He wants to not be seen as the idiot and just a goofball and wants his brothers to take him seriously. And he kind of comes off as a kid looking for validation. Not to mention Mikey can't stand when his family is sad and is always trying to defend them. Mikey can also pretty much defend himself as well. He has also been shown to hit his brothers or yell at them. He constantly sets them off in some way.
Mikey is also just a kid who had made several mistakes and is also the youngest. And being the youngest can at times be also really hard.
I wrote and said all of this just to prove a point and contradict peoples belief that Mikey is JUST the baby and a goofball and is not weak but strong. HELL- He wields what is considered as one of the hardest weapons to use. That just shows how skilled he is. Even Splinter in a video I believe said that he has more talent then his other bros combined and is naturally gifted and has the ability to be the strongest out of all of his brothers.

Unfamiliar Familiar is a crap fanfic and also Mikey isn't just a whiney crybaby and isn't a helpless creature that needs help.

As someone who has anger issues this just offends me. Whenever I burst into anger I immediately feel guilt later because I feel like I have just embarrassed myself and people will think I'm a person no one should be around. And I honestly hate sometimes being alone.
And I didn't even have any IDEA they made Mikey autistic just to excuse his actions and make him look more like a baby. This is legit exactly how people depict Rise Donnie as violent or the angry one because he is autistic, but it's the other way around. This offends me in so many ways.
Not only are the 2012 out of character, so are RISE. Yes they would protect each other and I'm sure would defend other versions of their brothers as well but just... I don't know how to explain it. I'm at this point at a loss for words god..
I hate this fandom so much. I'm not even surprised if Tolerable was actually abusive towards their friends and if that was the case, something tells me this stupid fanfic of theirs was probably to self project themselves if anything. Like seriously though-

well the family therapist thing fascinates me but i think i've talked about that and why it doesn't read true to me before.
and the pre-movie raph and leo fighting so bad headcanon stuff, though, bugs me doubly hard bc i would assume that start of movie is like. as bad as it got for that tension. the breaking point. like, lecturing and needling that didn't come to a full head (raph punching out leo's wall and then trying to square up w leo) until leo specifically messed up a mission that involved the foot clan (which i would imagine is kind of a trigger point seeing as the last result of "foot clan gathers mysterious artifacts" was "the world almost ends, we lost our home, gram gram died in front of us, we nearly lost our dad etc").
like. mikey was fine as anything blowing off training w leo! he was having a grand ol time, doing his best lil bro copycatting of leo's smugness, playing the "every time raph says hero take a bite of pizza" game no complaints, no looks of doubt. heck, donnie's fine going along with the goofing off too! when raph follows leo into his room to try to talk to him, mikey and donnie both straight-up have their faces pressed to the window to try to eavesdrop! they both look equally freaked out about the sudden escalation to Big Punch!
like idk the evidence is just not there for me to buy the fanon interpretation on this one. there's no world where mikey and donnie wouldn't get fed tf up and stick their noses in that business if it was so upsetting imo. i think everyone's movie characterization suffers a little bit overall tho tbh, that's a whole other post though

Okay I have to say that it bothers me immensely how this fandom treats the Donnieās Gifts episode.
Specifically the shock collar.
I know, I know, itās an incredibly old topic thatās like poking a sleeping bear to bring up again, but if you may feel the same I do, then hear me out.
On one side, we have people who see it as Donnie being deliberately cruel and actively wishing to control his brother through force if need be.
On the other side, we have people who see it as something good, and poor Donnie didnāt mean to hurt Leo! He didnāt mean for his gift to cause harm! He just wanted to create something to make Leo focus more, he just doesnāt understand that what he did was bad! But itās okay because he doesnāt get it!
Both these readings suck, in my opinion, though one I see more often than the other.
Now, I love Donnie, I do, heās so, so fun and interesting and a fantastic characterā¦but the shock collar was an incredibly messed up thing to make. Obviously, he loves his brothers, and he just wanted the best for them, but it was still an objectively awful thing to do to your brother. (Donāt get me wrong, Mikey and Raphās gifts were also not great, but letās focus on the collar.)
See, making a collar like that, and having your brother wear it, knowing what it doesā¦thatās not a good thing. It doesnāt matter that he didnāt get to explain it first. It doesnāt matter if it was meant to help Leo in the long run. That āhelpā is forcing Leo to endure painful shocks until heās conditioned to, what, pay attention? (And thatās a funny thought, considering it was the shocks that distracted him in the first place.)
Good intentions donāt automatically make things okay.
Thereās also an admittedly ableist tone to the reading of Donnie simply being let off the hook because he ādoesnāt understand why itās bad.ā Thatās- thatās so infantilizing. Donnie is more than capable of knowing when he messes up! And he did mess up here! I hate when people use his autism as an excuse, it feels so ableist to me. Just let him own up to it and apologize! Heās not a bad guy, and itās okay for characters to mess up! So long as they own up to it! Donnieās a person too, and he has flaws, let him own them, please.
However, this is not to say that Donnie is evil or abusive for doing this, not at all. While he should not be absolved of guilt, he clearly isnāt intending for his gifts to come off the way they had, and he clearly made them out of concern for his brothers. Itās understandable that he would go about it the wrong way - itās just not okay that he did. And what he did warrants an apology to the others, especially Leo, even if they themselves shook it off.
So, yeah. The shock collar is incredibly messed up. It was painful enough to affect Meat Sweats- and Leo had it around his neck. Itās a comedy, so I know we gotta take these things with a grain of salt, but whenever I see this episode tackled in a more serious way, it almost always either 1) makes Donnie out to be the Worst, as though we arenāt constantly shown him caring immensely for his brothers, or 2), admittedly more prevalently and annoyingly, it chooses to focus on how sad and misunderstood Donnie is, rather than the very real harm he caused. Like. LEO IS THE ONE WHO HAD A SHOCK COLLAR ON HIM. Put there by HIS OWN BROTHER. And no one cares about that??? Leoās pain is dismissed??? Donnieās feelings matter more??? What????
I think thatās what gets me most here, honestly. Not that Donnie is presented as evil, or innocent, but that Leoās experience doesnāt matter in comparison to Donnieās reactions to it. It leaves a horrible taste in my mouth to see time and time again.
Again. It doesnāt matter what the intentions were. It also doesnāt automatically make Donnie abusive or evil.
But it was a shock collar, made to hurt, made to correct, and if you look at it outside of the comedic lens it was established inā¦itās not okay.
Donnieās not a bad person, and heās actually a pretty great brother, a hero in his own rightā¦but he really messed up here.
another really fantastic detail from the s2 finale regarding Leo's powers... I've always loved the hell out of what they did cinematically with it, it looks and feels incredible and kicks total ass. initially I was under the impression that he was replacing his portals with his swords; that he was "traveling through" them per-say. but here --
...we can actually see Leo materializing SEPARATELY from his sword! you can see in the following frame he actually dissipates again and his sword continues flying along the same path untouched, inertia unaffected.
...and then he materializes again to properly align with it and catch it!
he's entirely not in contact with it but is implied to have already crossed spacetime. which means Leo can just... Do That. he's rapidly bending space to transmit his goddamn subatomic particles to a new location. the purpose of the swords isn't to do the portaling; it's to work as a landing pad. it's a vector point by which he re-solidifies the mass he's transporting. a familiar homing beacon he can align himself with on the fly.
