I confront [white guilt] every year, about a month into my course on racism, among [white] students who come to me in tears because they cannot deal with the racism that goes on in their families or their home towns or their student residences. Their tears are the result of genuine anguish, care, and a desire to learn and to change. I confront similar attitudes among my colleagues, and I am similarly gratified by their concern. But those who experience white guilt need to learn three things:

1) People of colour are generally not moved by their tears, and may even see those tears as a self-indulgent expression of white privilege. It is after all a great privilege to be able to express one’s emotion openly and to be confident that one is in a cultural context where one’s feelings will be understood.

2) Guilt is paralysing. It serves no purposes; it does no good. It is not a substitute for activism.

3) White guilt is often patronizing if it leads to pity for those of colour. Pity gets in the way of sincere and meaningful human relationships, and it forestalls the frankness that meaningful relationships demand. White guilt will not change the racialized environment; it will only make the guilty feel better.

yes! Lillian Faderman recorded how white gay culture has historically appropriated and exploited black culture for entertainment and self expression. it’s good to read a gay history book that holds us accountable

Hello everyone-please read! So earlier, you may have seen me asking if anyone has a DSLR camera. The truth is, I need one for class and also for my own personal works. I am a journalism student, and I need to have my own camera—I’ve been using my sister’s for a while, but I do need my own soon!

That said, i’ve put a camera on my wishlist. It’s a DSLR a for $399 and it has everything I need to pass my classes and succeed in my career.

Also have you noticed the traditional skills that men are supposed to have are mostly all things that only come up for specific situations, like changing a tire when the tire goes out, fixing the house when it needs to be fixed, fixing the car when it won’t work, and the traditional skills expected of women are things that have to be done everyday and always, like doing the dishes, cooking, and taking care of children.

Men’s work is a solution to a problem and when it’s done it’s done. Women’s work is a never-ending tide of tasks that must be accomplished every day.

And the practical result of this is that when a woman doesn’t know how to change a tire or un-clog a pipe, she’s belittled for this apparently gaping chasm in her knowledge, despite the fact that you can go years on end without encountering some of these supposedly-essential skills - while (traditionally) nothing is ever said of men who can’t cook or don’t know how to clean their own clothes, despite having been fully immersed in both since their first day on this earth.

A lot of the “”discourse”“ around her is just barely subverted racism. People who don’t like her often listen to “minimalist” magazines that actually do tell you to live off one one t-shirt and a potted cactus.
