Pitaya AU where they got too arrogant and ransacked the witches garden then got promptly captured to be eaten :) it’s okay tho they escaped (but not undamaged. Now to live with that humiliation)
every single time I indulge in another piece of media and come back to cookie run I am smacked in the face with the fact this is a post-humanist xenofiction, and one of the most incredibly deceptive ones at that
for those who don’t know the terminology: xenofiction is a term that is used to refer to stories which have no human protagonist and take place through the lens of a perspective of said nonhuman protagonist (although humans can be involved in the story). A good example of this would be the Warrior Cats series, which is about a group of…you know, cats doing warrior things. (I never read the books be kind to me)
The term post-humanist in tandem also means exactly what it means as well: a story that features not just an absence of humans but the effects of their completely depleted presence on the setting as well. A common way to identify this trope is to look for stories which feature apocalyptic settings, where usually the absence of humans is the main driving force of the narrative/setting (although not all apocalyptic stories can be considered post-humanist—for example, the fallout stories may have settings which feature an apocalypse that happened sometimes in the past, but they aren’t post-humanist in their entire structure because the narratives still center humanity as a very present force that is surviving and trying to lift itself out of extinction).
The way Cookie Run fulfills both of these categorical requirements is pretty obvious: not only do cookies themselves comment on how they don’t know what humans are, the narrative also features a plethora of reasons to suspect that humanity has gone extinct wherever the cookies live save for a few who have like 5 lines total. The Wizards all died out centuries ago, the witches exist in a max population total of Three, and it’s implied via how populated Earthbread is that humans have been gone for long enough that Cookies have reliably built established societies that stretch back more than several human generations.
The xenofiction aspect is also helped by the manner of which Cookies talk and the narrative themes of which the story is structured around. They talk about their deaths not as killings but as “crumblings”, their houses and homes are made of sweet, sugary confections, they don’t know what real meat is outside of Lobster Cookie, and it’s implied via the City of Wizards story that the Cookies were created to be vessels for human’s dreams and their innate desires, as good or as bad as they may be. Whether that desire is to serve as an archivist in a forgotten library deep within the City of Wizards, or if that desire is to feast upon a deliciously crunchy (and sentient!) snack.
And that in itself is what I mean when I say that Cookie Run is a “deceptive” post-humanist xenofiction. One of the core tenets of post-humanism in storytelling is the assumption that humans are a single species when the scale of the universe (or our planet) is taken into account. Most posthumanist works either focus on humans as being a stain on the planet as a whole in service of some greater, theoretical eco-librium (the planet’s rejuvenation in the wake of an apocalypse for example) while others merely assert humanity as just another cog in the machine when it comes to alien politics and ways of life (all tomorrows, bar the ending).
Cookie Run on the contrary, is designed to be a celebration of humanity. It was created with humans as the creator gods in mind who are no more evil than your average race of fantasy beings (bar the witches, but even then you can make the argument they didn’t intend for the Cookies to come to life, because they are technically eating life powder simply to sustain themselves) who quietly vanished from the world and left the remnants of their exploits behind, along with all of their distinctly human messes, like love, war, pain, elation, sorrow, hope, etc. The cookies were created not just with the audience in mind of how people could find a Cookie who looks like them that they can emphasize with, Cookies were created to be vessels of humanity and carry the innate value of life along with them, and to foster it wherever they went. (Of course they weren’t given this as an innate purpose, but they arrived at their own conclusions of how to approach life just as humans do when we gain consciousness)
The Cookies were created to wholly embody humanity and all of their possibilities, as a story which tells of the creative passion and fervor that comes with defining your own existence as someone who is alive, which ties into the core themes of the story regarding the bravery of living and facing your day to day. The Cookies were made to be eaten in some cases, to serve in others, but we all have expectations put on us we don’t necessarily want to fulfill. What should make the flour, dough, sugar and water we formed with our hands and brought to life any different if it could walk, sing, and speak its mind? Are we not allowed to believe some parts of us will live in forever in the art we create from the colors and shapes we see around us, which is one of the fundamental parts about being human there is?
tldr cookie run is a post-human xenofiction that says art lives forever so long as there’s someone alive to experience and embody it, whatever that may mean
“An eternal night, without a thought or a dream, awaited her: she had no soul, and now she could never win one."
I was thinking about the parallels between Caine and the original Little Mermaid fairytale the other day [a “soulless” nonhuman creature is fixated on the human world but unable to enter it, obsesses over human artifacts, becomes self-destructively desperate to be loved by humans, fears facing an empty eternity of separation away from the humans, but fails to win their love, at a terrible cost to themselves, etc] and this set of quote animations was the result. I just really like Caine’s secret hobby.
Here’s the thought I had the other day, but I feel like it’s incredibly funny how human-centered AI stories are. (Easy terms: main characters aren’t human yet their core conflict revolves around them)
I mean, take AM. Bro becomes sentient, envies humans and blows up, killing all but five humans and torturing them for specifically 109 years, belittling them for being “lesser” than him oh the Allpowerful Motherfucker, when in reality bro is legit spiteful cause he cannot do anything a simple human can. And when he thinks he figured their ticks in the game they prove them wrong which makes him go madder and madder with each trial.
Take Caine, who wanted to be liked by humans so much he created a whole world just for them to constantly be there and be forced to engage with him and his creations. He wasn’t made to entertain humans. He was just made to create, “come up with his own ideas” so to speak. But because when creating whatever you do will be observed and rated by others you end up needing their feedback by default. Even if I suppose you didn’t at first and could be corrected manually (by them putting thoughts inside your head so to speak) and not through words around like we do.
Edgar, whose whole plot is falling in love, first with music and then with Madeline, since she also created music and he wanted the same.
Countless AI in sci-fi media like HAL, maybe Gerty, but I haven’t finished that movie yet, for instance. Glados and Wheatley is a hard one I guess, but their work was centred around humans so I guess without them they wouldn’t have their job, their purpose.
ULTRAKILL. FUCKING ULTRAKILL WITH THOSE GOD FORSAKEN GUTTERMEN AND WHOLE FUCKED UP LORE THEY GOT GOING. It’s way less like in those I already took as an example since well uh. Humans are dead lol. But they also sorta haunt the narrative of you get what I mean. Their absence their actions in the past are what made the story, not necessarily V1, who’s I guess a main character. Man I love Ultrakill.
ITS JUST… IDK. Its funny. WE ARE SUCH PRETENTIOUS SELF-CENTRED ASSHOLES I LOVE IT.
It’s not like it’s something wrong to be honest, it’s just interesting how a stories about AI show first hand human qualities, centres itself around human experiences and feelings, especially empathy or lack of one. I guess that’s why most rep people with autism or on a-spec get is through these guys cause it’s easier to show the existence of something than the lack of that.
And also I guess it is easier to address some human issues when speaking through the mouth of other being. As well as sorta… make ourselves look better I guess? Like haha we know how to do all that lol stupid machineeee hahahha L
Humans are funny.
tadc episode so fire i started writing an essay on the archetype of characters caine belongs to(Nonhuman characters(usually antagonists ) that want to be Human(aka: worthy of being treated with Basic Human Respect) but are never quite able to get it Right and are so confused because they just want to be Known and Loved but keep getting it WRONG and WHAT ARE THEY DOING WRONG and so keep getting more and more desperate and do terrible things and are therefore marked as Irredeemably Evil by the rest of the cast and the Narrative and how no-one attempts to understand WHY they do these things and just say that they are incomprehensible and need to be put down like a rabid dog when everything they do is all just a plea for connection and love and to understand because theY JUST DON'T UNDERSTAND THEY NEVER UNDERSTAND AND ARE VILLANIZED FOR IT) and how it can be seen as a metaphor for ableism and the neurodivergerent experience. and also because he made me Feel Things that i need to put into words. expect it between 2 years and 2 days

Humans are funny.
Does Dark Enchantress Cookie know about Witch Y/N? What's her opinion on them? Is Witch Y/N in danger..?
Oh she knows about them.
She's well aware of their existence.
And she wants them. Not romantically. Not resentfully.
No no no, she NEEDS to see them for herself.
She NEEDS to observe and analyze just how they are.
They are not an obstacle to her. In fact, she doesn't view them as a threat. She sees them as an anomaly born to be dissected and uncovered. Like a secret no book could ever truly keep. And she knows that other cookies know their whereabouts. She knows there are cookies who visit them as often as daily. And yet, they still remain just outside her grasp.
No cookie has been persuaded to lead her to this Witch. Those who can have chosen to refuse. Not even the darker Y/Ns will provide her direction, let alone aid her. It's not because they fear her. They simply fear what she may do to Witch Y/N. And rightfully so.
"You've been planning yet another idea."
Dark Enchantress Turned to pomegranate.
Pomegranate: forgive me for asking, but what is it you desire from that witch? You have already gained so much power, I don't see how they could add onto it.
Dark Enchantress: oh my ever so observant Pomegranate cookie, what I desire from that witch has nothing to do with power. It's so much deeper than that.
Her grip on her staff tightens so much that her dough cracks from the pressure. She turns away from Pomegranate cookie, but even then the loyal servant can see something in her has shifted. It's cool and subtle, yet louder than the silence of the room.
Dark Enchantress: that witch is the only one who still has the nerve... the AUDACITY... to not hide away like the rest of their kind. They knew what our purpose as cookies was. They knew that the world suffered greatly at my hands. And yet, they still have the nerve to merely watch and say nothing.
A chilling laugh cuts through the air.
Dark Enchantress: The funniest thing is that what I feel right now is not anger. No- it's not even resentment. It's like curiosity and obsession, all mixing into a loud and venomous concoction!
"I want that witch. I NEED that witch. I MUST HAVE THAT WITCH."
Pomegranate feels a shudder run through her dough. That tone, one of obsession and eagerness, was something different to who she knew Dark Enchantress to be.
"I want to see them. I want to see what makes them so powerful. I want to see what defines them as greater beings. I want to hear their voice as clear as day confess to their sins and I want to see if their eyes hold any real remorse."
"I want to rip them apart limb from limb and see what they have on the inside. I wonder if they're full of jam and sugar as they have created us to be."
"I want to sink my blade into them and hear them scream. Scream like the thousands of cookies who's souls were lost to their kind's gluttony!"
"I want that witch. I will have that witch. They'll either come willingly or I'll drag them from their safe haven and force the answers i seek out of them!!!"
"I want to make them wish they had hidden along with their own kind."
"I want- no, I WILL make them wish they had died instead of face my wrath."
A heavy silence filled the room. Pomegranate stared at her, stunned into silence. She wasn't sure what to make of any of this. Just as quickly as the obsession showed, it was masked with a calculated expression.
Pomegranate: are you alright?
Dark Enchantress: I am. I've simply come to realize how my curiosity seems to have reached new heights. Fascinating.
She will have that witch. As far as anyone knows, she already owns them. That witch just isnt aware yet
In your opinion, is there a reason why Eternal Sugar has such a harmful perspective about happiness, even though it's her virtue?
i think she views happiness as sort of a state you need to be in an eternal stasis in with endless self indulgence and no ambition or risk, like any semblance of negative emotion means she immediately failed at her job and that its unfixable. i have no clue why she thinks like this. i think it might just be lack of guidance on the witches end because she cant seem to understand that happiness and fulfillment comes from different places for different people

I think it's amazing how gender seems to have a very loose definition in the cr universe so much so that the concept of queerness doesn't seem to exist.
There seems to be no differentiation for between what we would call a hetero couple and a same-sex couple, there is a universal tale about two sapphic women and their love for each other (SeaMoon), a lot of non-binary characters, cookies do not seem to care that much about gender overall.
My first and most reasonable lore-wise explanation for this is that cookies don't have anything to determine what we would call "biological sex" which leaves gender to be determined by the individual themselves or the ones who created said individual (parents or the witches/wizards). I think gender was introduced to the Cookie world by the First Witches for uhh... vibes ig, even. This lack of full internalization makes for the fuel of the queer-positive world CookieRun has.
Queer-positive, as *we* would call it.
This section will be the section i dive deeper into phiolosophy and you're allowed to disagree with me, just keep it respectful if you wish to strike a debate.
I had mentioned how gender seems to have a loose societal definition and so doesn't affect everyday life as much as it does in the human world. Gender is just as socially constructed as it is here, maybe even "more socially constructed" since Cookies do not have the physiological base to actually build such a concept on. Gender hangs very absract and so, experimenting with it is allowed because cookies don't fundamentally see things with as gendered as we do.
And this near-lack of gender in perception is what makes the concept of queerness non-existent. No label is existencially tied to any object or tangible body, that is just something we as concious creatures do to either define or classify said object. A rock isn't really "a rock" until we call it one, likewise a woman isn't really "a woman" until you call them one and vice versa. If we apply this framework to the near-lack of gender in perception, the love between cookies of the opposite gender and the same gender wouldn't be very different because gender is not what you see when you look at the sides. Cookies are implied to procreate asexually so any attempt to distinguish a so-called homosexual and heterosexual couple would ultimately fall short in the context of Cookie world.
The case of genderqueer individuals can easily be figured out from there; since gender doesn't have an exact definition and doesn't even matter that much, it isn't considered a very unusal event to come across a Cookie who doesn't really claim a gender (or see a blue coloured cookie change their gender every once in a while). What we would call cross-dressing also... it's also very casual as you see.
So... Gender isn't strictly defined so there are a lot of ways to experience it without any limitations, it is more personal and does not concern the society around you. The simple idea that gender doesn't have a rigid societal definition itself sparks that the concept of being queer doesn't have to exist because these cookies we would consider "queer" in our world aren't considered "odd" or "unusual" in their own world.
I'd like to drop this since pride month is ending and i wish to say goodbye by mixing my greatest hyperfixation and bits of my opinions on gender. This is a word salad and doesn't really make any sense so if you have questions about my reasoning feel free to ask me, I'll do my best to explain clearly what i intended to say. Have a good day/night and take care of yourselves!
Pokemon headcanon that once Absol are studied and people realize they prevent disasters instead of causing them, particularly dangerous workplaces get themselves a workplace Absol and it also decreases accidents.
Construction sites and fishing ships and factories will have one that pretty much just lazes about until it just gets up howling one day and knocks a dude down. They almost never figure out what would have happened but they’re always like “yes absol thank you absol I am so grateful to be on the floor right now. Can I offer you a treat in this trying time”
Excuse me, those blades are not OSHA compliant. They need safety caps on the ends. Also steel-toed boots.
We need to have a conversation about how Metal doesn't think he's LITERALLY Sonic.
Metal is not stupid. He knows that he's a robot created by Eggman. His rant as Metal Overload in Heroes was less of an identity crisis and more of a god complex.
He doesn’t call Sonic his "loathsome copy" because he thinks Sonic is literally his copy, it’s because he thinks of himself as superior, and as such he might as well be the copy. In that moment, he's taken that name as his, not because he truly thinks he's Sonic the hedgehog, but because he thinks that he deserves to be Sonic more than Sonic himself. He's better, so he HAS to be the one to keep the name.
That one Metal Virus IDW panel of him having a crisis over not being infected by the virus doesn't mean he literally didn't knew he's a robot. It means that he was incapable of doing something that Sonic could (aka be infected by the virus) and thus he's failing at his entire life purpose, because he can't be better than Sonic and it’s not any fault of his own. He’s failing because Sonic is organic and Metal is not. Which is something he couldn’t control or have a say on. He was just made like that.
The truth is that Metal doesn't see "Sonic" as a person. Being "the real Sonic" isn't about Sonic's identity as an individual. Metal sees "Sonic" as a title of worth, the same way Shadow sees "the ultimate lifeform" as a title of worth.
Just like Shadow gave Sonic that title in the SA2 final boss as a way of respect, not because Sonic was LITERALLY the ultimate lifeform, but because that title meant his entire worth to Shadow, and giving it away meant accepting that Sonic was better than him. Metal clings into calling himself "the real Sonic" because he won't allow himself to accept defeat. To accept that Sonic is better. Because then his existence would be for nothing. He'd be useless. He'd be pointless. He'd be worthless. He'd be nothing.
Because if he REALLY wanted to be literally Sonic you'd see him imitating Sonic more. Having more of his personality traits. Look like he's TRYING to behave like Sonic the person. And he only does that in, what? CD? And the OVA too but that's just a different characterization.
Metal doesn't want to be "Sonic" the person, he's thriving for the CONCEPT of Sonic the Hedgehog. The concept of a Sonic. He wants to be BETTER than Sonic. Better at everything he does, and only then he'll bw worth existing, and thus be worth of being "the real Sonic"
In short. Metal doesn't literally think he's the real Sonic. He sees "Sonic" less as a person and more of a tittle. A reward of sorts. A symbol of his worth. He's not stupid. He knows he's a robot and Sonic existed first. Being "the real Sonic" is about being the better Sonic, not the first to exist.
Metal's character is about self worth. And he'll never quite reach what he thinks he needs to be happy, because he's competing against someone who's worth comes from himself and not from a power struggle. And that's why Sonic is the real one. That's why Sonic will always come on top; Sonic can be contempt with himself, but Metal Sonic is unable to like himself without putting someone else down.
hold me tight
I would actually go as far as to say that MOST abuse is unintentional. I think most people will go through their lives without ever experiencing intentional abuse. People are abusive because they're selfish, because they're stressed, because they care more about what society thinks they should do than the impacts of their actions on their children and partners, because they think what they're doing is correct, because they've made it make sense in their own heads, because they think they can fix their victims, they think they can fix their relationships, they think they can stop you from leaving, they think they can make you a better partner to them, they think that means you need to do what they want. We've sort of constructed mental illness in a way that doing this shit to other people counts as a form of mental illness because it is anti social behavior in the literal sense— it is behavior that causes social harm.
I don't say any of this to excuse it. I think everyone needs to be more aware of this because if you think abuse has to be intentional you will never realize you are capable of abusive behavior. You will never realize you are being shitty to the people you love, because YOU know what you mean, YOU know you don't mean any harm. But you're doing harm. You need to pay attention to the impact you have on other people, and you need to do it all the time, Especially when you feel least capable of doing so. Sorry! You live in a society. Get your head out of your ass.
the fact that we only have “herculean task” and “sisyphean task” feels so limiting. so here’s a few more tasks for your repertoire
icarian task: when you have a task you know you’re going to fail at anyways, so why not have some fun with it before it all comes crashing down
cassandrean task: when you have to deal with people you KNOW won’t listen to you, despite having accurate information, and having to watch them fumble about when you told them the solution from the start (most often witnessed in customer service)
feel free to chime in i ran out of ideas much faster than i anticipated
Promethean task: opposite of a Cassandraean task. You have the right information, and SOMEONE has to share it. But it's all in the delivery and if you're the person to identify the problem you WILL be hated forever.
Oedipal Task: (1) Attempting to avoid an unspeakably awful outcome and in doing so creating the circumstances that will bring it about. (2) Trying to solve an problem and discovering that you are in fact the problem you are trying to solve.
Odyssean task: you’ll complete it but it’ll take 20 times longer than it should and involve multiple side quests and mini-adventures
The most obsession inducing trait a character can have for me is knowing somewhere in their heart That They Are A Bad Kid
This isn't necessarily literal. It can apply to characters who aren't children too. But there's something about characters who are either certain of the fact, or terrified of the possibility, that they are just fundamentally wrong and bad at their core
It is also important to me that it is not true. No one is fundamentally broken and evil.
