Pochacco PopSocket I made recently!
Peruvian textile fragment
Four-cornered hats made by the Wari people of Peru, c.600-900 CE
I’m kinda surprised that nalbinding isn’t as popular as crochet and knitting tbh because it has an even lower barrier of entry tools wise and unlike crochet and knitting it makes fabric that you can cut.
I guess it’s because it’s slower or something.
Nalbinding aka needle binding is when you use yarn and a big sewing needle to make fabric btw
It also has a lot of different kinds of stitches you can do that make different densities of fabric.
Some people even make rugs.
I feel like part of it might be casual people are generally aware of the existence of crochet and knitting, even if they don’t know very much about either, but have never heard of nalbinding
Yeah I hadn’t heard of it until recently and I ordered a big bone needle for myself to try it out and that should be arriving soon.
I was surprised that I’d never heard of it though. It’s older than knitting and crocheting and even though it’s been done all over the world it’s super relevant to Nordic culture and my grandmother and I are both into keeping in touch with our roots a bit so I’m surprised I’ve never heard of it.
It seems like the sort of thing that would be popular even if not as popular as crocheting and knitting, considering the low barrier of entry.
@handmadehistorypodcast has an episode about nalbinding actually I highly reccomend the podcast for learning random craft stuff
There's a lot of similar stitches and structures in needle lace making
There's a lot of variations on the spacing of the stitches.
I'm also still thinking about the Nasca textiles from 1000 years ago in Peru, that are structured like twisted knitting,
saw some things calling the "single needle knitting" which sorta makes sense, but i found that unhelpful to figuring it out.
I think the other common terminology is twist loop knit, loop stitch twist knit. cross-knit loop stitch? also called the "Ceylon Stitch" for reasons I'm very curious about, but not sure how to investigate
I haven't really found my way back to primary sources, but I did find this set of video tutorials of modern takes on "looping" techniques
inspired by ancient fiber techniques and contemporary ways to give old ideas a new spin
I think similarly to nalbinding, it also takes frequent splices, but it doesn't unravel, and it's pretty convenient to just stick in your pocket.
It can also be very free form,
I made some little sculptures with it.
MACRE-MAY 2026 PROMPT LIST
This year focuses on designs that play with color and shapes, and it gets roughly more complicated as the month progresses. A large portion of these designs I figured out myself. :D
I was planning to have a 3D project this year but these prompts turned out rather intensive and the year itself turned out, ah, eventful. So I decided to stick to straightforward design prompts and save my larger projects for another year. Stay strong 3D project, you will have your day.

Nakhchyvan Tessellation
Chris Cambré has a lovely analysis of a hexagonal tiling from the Yusif ibn Kuseyir Mausoleum in Azerbaijan. I wondered about generalizing it as it's completely determined by the 2nd hexagon relative to the first.
At first I didn't realize that some of the green hexagons were missing...

hammering out a floret approximation
hm, coogle grome.
been getting into blackwork embroidery, and thinking about the patterns, and the tilings and tessellations, and
I noticed a bunch of them are made all of right angles and 45 degree angles
which means i can build them in minecraft with blocks and stairs
it takes forever to place stairs correctly in Minecraft.
did I spend time and effort on this because it is challenging and interesting or because there's something basic here that i personally struggle with
Remake and pattern with link to original in Korean
nice, i was just starting to get mad at google image search sending me around in pinterest circles
ooh,
A note from the Tumblr team
A few weeks ago, a small but higher-than-normal number of accounts were mistakenly suspended. The suspensions were quickly reversed, but our response wasn't good enough, and we want to say more.
We're sorry it took us this long to address this. Trust and safety issues are difficult to discuss publicly, and we can’t share details about specific individuals or how our systems work without exposing Tumblr to bad actors. But caution led us to say too little, too late.
We’ve heard from members of the trans community on Tumblr that they were disproportionately impacted, and that deserves a direct response. According to 3rd party researchers, Tumblr’s userbase has the highest proportion of LGBTQIA+ folks on social media, so it makes sense that when something goes wrong, those communities might feel that disproportionate impact.
One thing we want to emphasize is that we do not moderate people's identities. We moderate behavior. We know that identity shows up across a Tumblr profile in many ways, from followed topics to the flags people put in their bios, and more. However, these signals play no role in how our moderation systems make decisions. We monitor those systems for evidence of bias and take corrective action when we find it.
We understand that the communications sent to affected users, and our broader silence to the community, didn't meet the standard people expect from us. That feedback is fair, and we apologize. We've updated the messaging sent to people impacted by these incidents. We are also overhauling our process with a goal of responding to mistaken suspension appeals within 24 hours, and have instituted an ongoing internal review of how suspensions and appeals are handled.
Going forward, we're committed to finding a better balance: being more transparent with our community about issues that matter, even when we can't share everything.
Tumblr belongs to everyone. We take that seriously, and we intend to earn back your trust. We are not afraid to have tough discussions with you or make updates based on your feedback, though on occasion, it might take some time.
To the people whose accounts were affected, and to the members of our trans community who felt targeted: we are truly sorry.
Tumblr Staff
how many people worked on this?
cripes, dude
"One thing we want to emphasize is that we do not moderate people's identities. We moderate behavior."
like, are we unfamiliar with the dark histories of drawing lines between "people" and their expressions, culture, and presentations?
"Love the sinner, hate the sin" amirite? urgh.
"Is some unnamed, subset, of our beloved "LGBTQIA+ folks" feeling attacked and marginalized? No you're not. We're being transparent!"
Despite conservatives' grumblings, it is still legal to say WOMEN,
if you can call out "female presenting nipples" as unacceptable content, you can acknowledge trans women are the "members of the trans community" who are being disproportionately banned and singled out for punishment.
