So here’s the thing. As a cop, you get the privilege of seeing people at their absolute worst, when they need you the most, when they think they need you the least, and both sides will bring a sober reminder of that to you at all times. You’re going to see people in wrecks, dead people, people who have hit rock bottom, people trying to find solace at the bottom of a bottle, bowl, needle. People who just lost their loved one, people who just took a loved one, loved ones who took themselves, people who hate your very existence and for what you stand for, people who think they know more than you, people who see you standing in between them and their freedom, and all of these things add up to a totality that can seem insurmountable and outright intimidating. Recognize your service and dedication goes to those who need you to be there for them. To be their protector, their advocate, their light in darkness. Many won’t see it then, and you may not even recognize it in the moment, but you go out there every day and night for them, to try and make a small difference in their life and their world, because you know of you didn’t, you wouldn’t be able to sleep easy knowing you didn’t do your absolute best to be a part of that change you want to see in your community. It’s alright to be scared. It takes a stronger and braver individual to fight through that fear and sort out the mess.
