-- "Boy, I'm glad to hear that."
Asriel rubs the back of his neck, a little of his previous excitement fading in the face of Kris's newfound monotony. It wasn't like they'd never been like this, not even before he'd left, but usually this kind of reaction implied something was wrong. Maybe even horribly so.
-- "All of that, I mean. Noelle's a good kid."
Asriel can't deny there's some hurt of his own to that. Dess's disappearance had definitely hit him hard- she'd been around so much and present so frequently it was as if losing a member of his own family. But that meant Kris had taken it hard too, and for that sake and that alone he forces himself to push it down and continue.
-- "C'mon, then. Who's your new friend? Are they treating you well?"
More than anything else, Asriel hopes they are. Kris needed that- that support, that comfort, now far more than ever. He'd only managed to get a week of his studies to come down here, but Asriel can tell immediately the help Kris needed would be far more than that. And if he risked staying any longer, then all that would do is make it more painful when the time came to finally leave again.
He exhales, attempting to dismiss the negativity of these thoughts once and for all. This week was his chance to fix things- there was no point dwelling on the impossiblity of that feat, or he'd never succeed at all.
-- "And the dreams. You've gotta tell me about those too. I've actually wanted to talk to you about weird dream stuff, so maybe that's a sign."
He doesn't elaborate on that any further, simply shoving his hands into the pocket of his hoodie and glancing back towards the door.
--"Not that I'm gonna force you to be any more verbal than you want to be, of course. I get ya. We can do this all through illustrative cartoons, or whatever medium you prefer- I'm just very, very curious as to what you've gotten up to in this time, that's all."
inquireanerdyberd:
Berdly wasn’t as familiar with Asriel than most, but he’d certainly heard whispers of the goat monster, long before he properly met him in person. There wasn’t a single resident in Hometown, new or old, who didn’t know the name of Asriel Dreemur. Bright student, funny and kind person, a goat overflowing with charisma. Berdly couldn’t help but be jealous of that reputation.
However, the Asriel spoken of on the streets and the Asriel he knew were separate people. Time and time again, whenever the bluebird visited Kris to play games with them, there Asriel was with always something to say. He’d tease the little bird monster in the home and whilst at work, he couldn’t escape Asriel’s little quips. It wore down on the teen, but he’d never admit defeat before the golden child and his little sibling, Berdly’s greatest adversary.
Ever since he knew of the family debt, he’d remind Asriel at every turn while on the job, and when the goat left for college, the bluebird directed that ire towards Kris. How to Draw Dragons had to be returned at some point, right? Berdly thought as much for the longest time, but after his adventure in the Dark World did he begin to think otherwise.
He wasn’t about to confess he paid the debt off in secret, purchasing the book in Kris’ stead to thank them for listening to him open up. He told Kris and no one else, and he hoped that secret would remain with them and only them. Here, however, the bluebird was attempting to get a rise out of Asriel, to get back at him for all that time he’d been teased.
But to his surprise, he was met with concern.
*H-hey! Don’t dodge the question—!
Even through his dejection, he knew when to back down. The tension he displayed one moment, vanished the next after he let out a sigh. There was no getting a reaction out of Asriel, was there…? The bluebird paused, taking a moment to come up with an answer. This whole ‘Dark World’ was a secret, right? Did Asriel know…? Berdly didn’t take that chance, and he let out a sheepish chuckle.
*Ah, you must be asking about my wing.
*Let’s just say an… unfortunate accident occurred involving myself and a loose wire.
*Worry not, however! That pain has long since passed.
-- "Well, that...doesn't sound pleasant."
Understatement of the year complete, Asriel leans forward on the desk and delivers a very long sigh, resting his head in a hand and letting his gaze scan the bird standing before him a little more closely.
He'd never truly had it out for Berdly, not in the slightest. It just so came that the only way Asriel could show real affection for people was through jabs and quips and little jokes that he always prayed came across as such- truth be told, he admired the bluebird.
Dess had never managed to hold out that long copying the answers from him- honestly, he was amazed Berdly had actuallg done so well at spongeing off Noelle in turn, but Asriel just supposed it went to show that history had a very fond habit of repeating itself. Serious arm injuries notwithstanding, of course.
That hadn't happened before. Ever.
And genuinely, that scared him too.
Berdly felt like a little brother to him-someone he was more than willing to tease until kingdom come, but someone who he longed to be able to protect from any sort of other worldly harm all the same- a feat he hadn't managed to accomplish this time, it seemed, for all it send a little pang of terrified worry through the goat's chest at the thought.
-- "Wait, what do you mean 'long since'?"
There's worry-genuine worry- beginning to seep into the goat's voice now, all previous fears about paying fines now well and truly forgotten.
-- "How long was it since you got this injury, Berdly?"
And why hasn't it already healed?
The second question goes entirely unspoken.
Asriel's not sure could even muster up the courage to ask it, let alone run the risk of actually earning an answer.
The thing was, as a kid who'd played years of sport against a girl who'd once knocked him unconscious with a slightly-too-well-placed tennis ball throw, he considered himself well-versed in any kind of injury a monster could sustain. He knew the long-term ones, the short-term ones, the ones that stopped hurting and the ones that didn't- and, as far as he was concerned, it was usually actually bad sign when things stopped hurting. Especially if the injury was still there.
-- "Like, is it just...broken, or...?"
He wasn't sure he wanted an answer to that one either.
He wasn't sure he wanted an answer to any of this, actually. At all. Visits to libraries to check out all their books on mystery-solving were probably not mean to engulf you in such cold dread, Asriel mused. Maybe he should've just stayed in college. It was a lot easier there, and far more worry-free, which was seriously saying something.
dark-duo:
W… Wow, was Will really that much of an open book…? He quickly sat back down, even if Asriel didn’t command him to do so. The last thing he wanted was someone else to be mad at him, after all! A bead of sweat formed on his forehead, before he fidgeted in his seat. “B… Behaviours…? Oh, um… You mean, like, ah, how, um… Well, um, I’m not… Very, ah, smart, or good with wuh… Words, and, um… I’m just not really good at a lot of things, really. That’s, um… Why I don’t tend to, ah, hang out around a lot of, um… People. Besides, I’m… Uh, you know, dirty and, um… You know, smell.” He chuckles at the last part, clearly a jab at himself.
“I… I mean, I, um… I was kicked out of my, um… House for a reason, so, uh…” The shark stops, clearly starting to touch upon very rough issues for the teenager. His eyes can no longer face Asriel, as he looks down, to the side, or all around as he continuously fidgets in his chair. Was… Was he starting off too strong? He probably was. Will was probably ruining this whole thing, right off the bat, too.
About what he expected in terms of his speaking skills, anyhow. Nervously, he bit the middle of his index finger- A nervous tic, it seems. “E…Erm, I’m sorry, I didn’t… Mean to make this, um… Uncomfortable…” Will bows his head in apology, looking down at the ground.
Should… Should he leave? He probably should, but that might make Asriel angry. So, he’ll just sit here and wait for what the therapist says next…
-- "Sorry, you were WHAT?" Asriel blurts, completely destroying the three laws of counselling (one, don't ask questions, two, don't be surprised, and three, uh, he couldn't remember the third. probably something about not interjecting.)
It wasn't like he wasn't theoretically prepared for that particular admittance, more that it just...hadn't quite been what he was expecting in the moment.
He probably should've known better, through- there wasn't a sane soul in Hometown, was there?
-- "I apologise. That was very rude and improper of me, and I didn't intend to make it seem like it was at all the wrong thing for you to say. I'm actually very glad you admitted that, because by the Angel's used toenail collection, it's very much...going to give me something to work with here."
Asriel was rather renowned for being the kind of kid who would never- never- take the Angel's name in vain, let alone in a manner as inappropriate as commenting on Their nail clippings. But, gathering by the fact the goat's now putting his head in his paws and making vague whimpering sounds, evidently the stress of all of this was pushing him far, far beyond his normal levels.
-- "No- no, William- whatever this is, it most certainly is not uncomfortable. Worrying, perhaps. Flat out terrifying, definitely. But uncomfortable? Not in the slightest.
In fact, please- it would mean a lot to me if you would tell me anything more you feel comfortable sharing. We're clearly invoking on some very sensitive topics here so I can understand if you're unwilling to go any further, but considering the nature of the things I've heard, it might be better for you in the long run to actually-- talk about it? To someone? Anyone? The police, perhaps?
I mean, after all, your apparent inability to talk is not what I'd comment on here. If anything, you seem a very eloquent young man, and likely a very smart one too. But- uh- yeah."
-- "Yeah, this is very much not a normal situation to be in. Seriously. 'Seek professional levels of help' kind of not normal. Like, I don't know what's going on in your home life, but from what I've heard just now, I'm guessing your parents are..."
-- "SERIOUSLY fucked up."

An extremly milky coffee sits in hand. Little waves of steam rising up. A very excitable looking skeleton waves his free apendege in greeting before placing it back at his hip. ‘Greetings! If you were looking for a perfectly popular pal to call your own, today is your lucky day! I’m Papyrus! My brother and I are new here… (and he pulled me away from my puzzles to make some new friends) So here I am! Attempting to find companionship!’
‘And wowie! What an excellent coincidence; you are the very first monster I laid my eye sockets on. Lucky you!’
‘So what do you say?’
-- "I say I'd be absolutely honored to be your friend."
Asriel flashes him his most charming smile, taking a sip of his own hot chocolate before setting it down on the table beside him. He's truly not sure whether to be amused or amazed at this forwardness thrust of friendship, but either way, there's definitely a part of Asriel that's more than grateful for it. It usually took a lot of eloquent wheedling to even get someone to be truly nice to him, let alone friends- so to have the offer presented within a minute or two of even meeting this stranger was honestly a miracle in itself.
-- "I'm Asriel, by the way. Asriel Dreemurr. But you're welcome to just call me Azzy- most people do, heh."

They show their brother their cowboy hat they found, it's cool...like them, so they are going to wear it now.
-- "Oh, SWEET!"
Asriel is now wondering if he can get a cowboy hat.
He thinks he'd absolutely rock it, but he'd probably still never look as cool as his little sibling in this moment. Then again, not many people could.
dark-duo:
“Y… Yeah, you… Y’know, you, uh, said it…” Will whispers, looking away from the Goat as he sits himself down nearby. Apparently, this goat guy was making a big splash in home town or something. Toriel sure as heck didn’t stop talking about him… Apparently he’s her kid? Will can definitely tell the similarities, just at a first glance, and if he actually bothered to look at him instead of looking at his feet, he could probably note a lot more similarities to Ms. Toriel.
There’s a pause, as he tries to think of what to follow up with. “Well, they let me know, um, what, ah… They didn’t like… When they actually, you know, spoke to me. But, I mean… Everyone’s parents are, uh… Like that, right? On some level.” The shark finally adds on, shuffling around in his couch, uncomfortable. Was he doing this right? I mean, probably not. He didn’t really know how therapy went, so he was only hoping he wasn’t being… Graded on this or something. Ah, man, the Therapist is probably judging him so badly…!
“S… Sorry, I’m not good, ah, at this… I should, uh… Probably go…” He shuffles to get off of the couch and leave. He does seem to have a knack to make everyone uncomfortable when he talks…
-- "Seems like you think this is an experience you're able to fail."
Asriel leans back on his chair, gaze raising back up to Will.
-- "Well, consider this a... conversation, Will. I'm not going to make you stay if you're not comfortable, of course, but no part of anything that's said here will leave the room, and nor will I judge you about it either."
He now takes the opportunity to properly close the lid of the laptop and set his book aside, offering Will another comforting smile in the face of the other boy's apparent rising panic.
As patronising as that may had seemed initially, he'd found it was surprisingly effective towards helping people feel a little more comfortable or even just bringing the tension of the room down- a skill which had served Asriel very well, even amongst his other peers who were well aware of counselling-based tricks like that.
Besides, it made him feel like he knew what he was doing.
Which he very much did not.
-- "From what it sounds like, you've not had a lot of experience with talking about topics like this with other people, or even at all, so you're doing brilliantly to get this far."
That, alone, was a sentence he'd had to break psychological guidelines just to be able to come out with, but-- Angel's Wings, this kid clearly needed at least some support.
Asriel's genuinely equal parts amazed and concerned at how far Will had managed to get himself into this position- yeesh, and he though he'd had parental issues!
-- "It seems like you also believe the behaviours exhibited towards you to be normal and acceptable, particularly within the bounds of familial relationships."
mothflannel:
“Oh, scandalous… Bet that’d get some newspapers flowing.”
With a hint of sarcasm in his voice, the moth does sit himself down after Asriel’s papers had been scrapped to the side. Furred hand offers for a shake to the other monster’s.
“Ellis. Moved in not too long ago, lucky you’re here while I’m the one on shift. You know Berdly, right? That kid can go a mile-a-minute at times.”
-- "So much so that I'm surprised you think I could possibly not know him."
Asriel offers a low chuckle and takes Ellis's offer of a handshake, truly not sure if he should go the whole way and wipe his paw on his jeans once it was over.
It had been a long, long time since he'd ever had someone who he'd been able to actually bump heads with, let alone a stranger seemingly so close to his age (and thus, Azzy is having more than his fair share of fun just toying with this moth.)
-- "Besides, it's not like the news around here has anything more important to report. I take it that life was more interesting back where you came from, huh?"
It's...a jibe.
There's no force behind it, just curiosity, enough so the innocence of it's almost worrying. Asriel's been described many things throughout the course of his long and eventful life, but 'innocent' has never been one.
heartlessdream:
As soon as Asriel appeared and came closer Kris gave the goat monster a hug. There were many complicated emotions going through the human’s head. They had been waiting for their brother to come back for what felt like forever. They had felt so empty, so devoid of purpose or belonging without him. It almost felt like a dream come true to see their beloved brother. Kris had felt so alone.
“Don’t leave again…I missed you a lot….”
They didn’t care if it sounded selfish, they didn’t want to lose Asriel. Mom had been fine since Asriel left, but Dad kept asking Kris to deliver presents. Such actions made everything strained since Kris felt they were being forced to pick a side between their parents which they hated. Even if that wasn’t Asgore’s intention it came across that way. Kris did tend to blow things out of proportion, either to mess with others or because they took something the wrong way. Kris was hard to understand sometimes, even Toriel had trouble getting them. Although, Asriel could read Kris like a book he was the only one who could.
Kris had missed that lack of understanding the most. That along with the force that made them do things they didn’t want to do. Asriel would be the only one they would trust with that information. Anyone else it would be too dangerous. For now though, Kris simply wanted to be held and be with their sibling.
-- "Oh, Kris..."
Asriel wastes no time in returning the hug, pulling them as close to his chest as he felt was possible without shattering the human's fragile little ribcage.
Truth be told, he didn't want to leave either. He knew he'd have to, eventually, he'd only managed to arrange a week at most to be away, but there was no way in hell he was going to say that to Kris now, not with them like this. Something had clearly upset them, and Asriel had to admit there's a huge part of him that's not surprised by the fact.
For all it'd given him a chance to escape everything- the sudden absence of his best friend, the failures of his family life- he'd known leaving for college would strand Kris on their own, and that idea was now winding its way around his gut like a tapeworm full of guilt.
-- "I'm not gonna leave, okay? Not anytime soon."
Asriel plants a soft kiss against his sibling's forehead.
-- "I missed you too, shortstack. So much. I couldn't bear not being with you for so, so long, but I'm here now and you've gotta tell me about everything you've done while I was away, alright?"
Knowing there's some serious pressure on him to at least comfort his sibling, Azzy offers them a shaky smile.
-- "C'mon. Or else I'm gonna have to ask Mom, an' I'm sure you don't want that, right?"
[bodycontainsahumansoul] "...Asriel..."
- - [@bodycontainsahumansoul] - -
-- "...Kris..."
The goat echoes, the grin he's unable to keep of his lips probably the most obvious inclination that the tease has no real malice behind it.
-- "C'mon. What's happened? You've got to tell me all about it- sibling law and all that!"
(Of course, that didn't necessarily mean verbally. Submissions by interpretive dance would also be acceptable.)
"I'd sell my soul for some conversation right now." How's two grand sound?
Looks very happily towards their brother.
Asriel grins back, leaning over and ruffling their little sibling's hair with a paw- honestly just delighting in the fact he's even able to do that now.
-- "Hey, Mischief. I missed ya too."
Oh would you look at that, it was their older brother, time for their time honored tradition of tackle hugging their older sibling.
-- "Kris!"
The goat sounds far more delighted than anyone tackle-hugged so hard that they nearly destroyed their mom's antique china hall decoration deserved to be.
-- "Hey, squirt! How've you been holding up?"
"So, you're Asriel, huh? I've heard a fair bit about you from your mom and a few others. Real town hero type, heh."
-- "A'course. All the people that don't know about me helping the star pupil cheat in pretty much every exam she sat."
Asriel shrugs, brushing aside a few of his papers that he'd scattered haphazardly across the library table- so that if Ellis really wanted, he'd probably be able to actually sit down.
-- "C'mon then, big guy. Do I at least get the pleasure of knowing your name back?"
Azzy, if you're taking a break in Hometown, make sure spend lots of time with Kris. They miss you very much.
