Crowley My Service Dog In Training

This is the blog I plan on posting about training my service dog in training, Crowley. He is a standard poodle puppy. He is trained in migraine alert and we're working on tasks to help me with mobility and anxiety as well. (Picking up dropped items, grounding during a panic attack) We've started to work a lot on public access though we're at that strange part where some days he's perfect and other days we cut outings short. This is not my primary blog.

Does anyone have advice for when your workplace which is supposed to be service animals only keeps letting in non-service dogs because they won’t ask what work or task the dog does? Like I’m at my wits end I go to work and never get a second to relax since every time we go around a corner we have to worry about being jumped on by a dog. I’m searching for other work but it’s hard to job hunt when you’re constantly exhausted. (It used to be maybe 4 not very under control dogs a month which I could deal with now it’s that 1-3days a week occasionally all 5 days)

Couple of things every SD handler already knows:

1) that is a dog

2) that is a cute/handsome/pretty/beautiful/lovely dog

3) that dog has on shoes

4) that dog is so well behaved

yall. this isn’t a joke. if i can tell a 5 yr old “my dog is working, please let her be” and they understand then you can too. those dogs ARE working. they have a job to do. and when we say ‘leave them alone’ that includes making faces at them and baby talking them. literally act like they are just someone’s bag or something. if you distract them they could fail to alert their owner to a seizure or blood sugar issue or allergen. you are literally jeopardizing someone’s life bc you can’t have basic decency, respect, and self control.

Here, if you want a comparison that isn’t an object: I worked as a caregiver for people with developmental (usually accompanied by physical) disabilities. My job was to accompany them into the community for various activities including shopping, dining, and leisure activities. And everywhere we went people would come up to ME and tell me what a good person I was, what a great service I was providing, god bless me, etc.  Not only was it embarrassing for both me and my consumers, it was distracting! I was supposed to be paying attention to my consumers and their needs, which could often change rapidly depending on their conditions, and instead I was having to deal with some prick who felt the need to voice what a martyr I was for doing my job. And they’d usually get angry if I ignored them or informed them they were distracting me from my job, which sounds familiar.

So yeah. Leave. The Dog. Alone. All you’re doing is making yourself feel good while distracting the dog from its job and endangering the person it’s supposed to be helping.

Question: I know service dogs are for a variety of maladies (I hope that’s not offensive, if so plz correct me) so is it wrong to even go up to the person and calmly tell them their dog is cute and ask them to give them a pet for me later when they’re off the clock? Without actually giving the dog attention?

people love talking to my dog or asking questions while we’re in line and therefore can’t just leave.  if we’re in line chances are I feel terrible, he’s doing his job and I’m trying not to fall on the floor I do not have the time or energy to answer questions.  he knows he’s a good boy and that he’s very smart.  I know he’s doing a good job.  I should not have to worry about people petting him when I’m having tachycardia and actively need him to do his job.  just leave us and our dofs alone

So, Crowley has once again decided he hates his boots and will somewhat protest having to work in them, on the plus side he gets extra cuddly with them on and enjoys riding on my lap in my wheelchair which is a useful thing for him to do in crowded places and when in my wheelchair it’s easier for him to alert from my lap.

So, Twister just dropped on netflix, and I was wondering how someone more familiar with tornadoes feels about it (with the understanding that early 90s movies are delightfully and painfully overdramatic)?

That movie is so dumb and I love it, but like, in the MSTK sort of love. Me and my siblings and friends like to watch it and point out all the shit they got wrong, and how fuckin dead they’d be at the end holding onto that little belt tied to that little pipe.

Like son, a category 5 would rip you right off of that sad little bit of pipe but it wouldn’t matter because it would have driven a fuckin twig completely through your skull like a bullet before that even happened.

So Twister is pretty much my favorite movie of all times and sometimes I wonder if I really made the right choice in leaving weather as a hobby. First off tornadoes really do strange things sometimes such as hitting an egg farm and safely placing the eggs down and another one had managed to pick up and gently place down a sleeping baby supposedly without waking it.(sorry I don’t have the source I’m pretty sure that book is still at my parents house) whether or not an f5 (now days would be called an EF5) would spare someone is anyone’s guess.

EF5 can easily send objects through trees like boards but also straw. So yeah odds are they wouldn’t have survived it but it makes for a good movie.

Basically I’ve been reading weather books since I was 5(I had multiple tornado picture books) because of the movie Twister. They did a pretty good job with what they knew at the time about tornadoes in that movie. And I’m a trained Storm Spotter because of that movie so I don’t really have much bad to say about it because I love it too much. Also, The advance spotter training is basically how to storm chase and it‘s a free class in Iowa. Though when I was there advanced storm spotting was only done at UNI and ISU.

I’m going to beat this dead horse and just say that I find it amusing that in every one of these spay/neuter ‘debates’ someone tries to argue that a person who dedicates a great part of their own time to providing for their dogs and ensuring their welfare should snip-snip their dog because many irresponsible pet owners let their dogs reproduce.

I think of it as a precautionary measure. There are so many dogs in shelters and if your male dog gets loose on accident (let’s be honest, it’s always a possibility) he could impregnate another dog and you don’t know if the dog has anyone to provide for the puppies. If your dog is female, it’s still not a good idea to not have them spayed because if you aren’t planning on puppies it can be very demanding and it’s very hard to find good homes for each and every one of them. If you don’t plan on breeding your dog, i think it’s really in your best interest to have them spayed or neutered. Just my opinion.

I hear you, but I also think there’s a massive cultural divide here. I live in a country where surgery (in general, and neutering dogs in particular) on animals without a specific (usually medical) reason is illegal - and as a result of that every single dog in my family have been intact, I’ve only ever met two (?) males that I knew were fixed. None of these dogs has produced accidental litters, despite most of them living in the same house as an intact dog of the opposite sex. Here, properly managing, supervising and training an intact dog is just what you sign up for when getting a dog. We don’t have a population problem, despite the majority being intact. And that leads me to believe, personally, that the prevalence of accidental litters relies more on the ownership culture than the actual animals.

So to me, it sounds super backward when you see people who put more than average effort into properly managing and caring for their dogs be told that because other people can’t/won’t manage theirs, they should put their own dogs under the knife. 

Like I’m not smacking anyone over the head and saying don’t spay, there are many reasons for why desexing might be the right choice, but to me, it will always be a decision to be made for an individual situation and I think that particular argument in many cases (most, in my experience, but that could be more abt my social circle than the general public) is whack.

I’m not going to rip out vitally important endocrine system organs from my animal as a “just in case”. Are there dog owners who don’t do enough to keep their dogs from breeding irresponsibly? Yeah, unfortunately. Does that mean that I – a responsible owner – should put my dog under for unneccesary surgery that will irreversibly remove important parts of their bodies, forever changing their hormones and increasing their risk of serious health issues and behavioral problems to make up for the mistakes of those irresponsible owners? Hell to the fuck no.

If you want to neuter your own dog, go for it. But don’t judge me or try to pressure me for not doing the same. I’ve done the research, I’m putting in the work to be a responsible owner and trainer for my own pets, and I have my own very good reasons for not neutering just as you may have your own reasons for neutering.

I thought that if you spayed or neutered your animals, they tend to live a healthier/longer life? Like, I could be wrong, but when my lab wasn’t spayed, she went through a false pregnancy and she ended up developing an infection in her uterus that was common in unspayed labs.

Getting her spayed saved her life. And all my vets in 3 different states push for it. And not just for cash - these were people I trusted. I would like to know if what they’re saying is wrong and where you guys drew your conclusion from! :)

Source dump! There’s a lot so I’ll put it under a read more. Most of these are dog only studies and articles, not cats unfortunately. And I myself know little about this subject concerning cats since I only own dogs so I can’t really comment on cats specifically. But at this point I do consider neutering dogs to be a risk not worth taking unless it becomes medically necessary. For people who do want to spay and neuter I recommend looking into vasectomies and ovary sparing spays as these don’t rip out important hormone producing organs.

I don’t know if people will be worried about this or not but I live in a county with an extremely strict spay and neuter law(supposed to be done by 4 months old which is bull). Crowley’s vasectomy is considered the same thing as being neutered since he can no longer have babies. So even places with strict spay/neuter can be fine with vasectomies.

Right now the only thing I have planned is maybe go hang out at the Joann’s because it’s usually quite empty and unlike my apartment complex I can probably avoid screaming children there.

I would absolutely consider making an “INTERACTIONS IRRITATE HANDLER” but my machine only handles up to 4x4 inch patches easily to be able to nicely stitch around the outside so the fabric doesn’t unravel and then the it would be somewhat small letters. But when I get a bigger embroidery machine, I hope I remember this post and could get one to you.

Crowley my service dog enjoying a fun day of work. Natasha who can break into pretty much anything and thankfully is content with where I live as she can open doors and turn lights on and off but currently chooses not to. Lastly, Aslan who enjoys attacking my iPad, leading Crowley to trouble, cuddling, and attempting to somewhat leap in my arms when I return home from trips he deems too long such as doctors appointments.

Just wondering, are there any mountains, cliffs or even large hills in Iowa?

Cliffs; Yes! Found in Northeast Iowa along the Mississippi river and in the driftless zone (I live on the edge of this part!)

However, the REST of Iowa? The best you’ll get is some ancient glacial moraine deposits left at the end of ice ages, and of course loess hills. Neither of these can be called ‘large’. ‘Gently rolling’ is one phrase I’ve seen. “Flat” is another. Sometimes “Oh my god it’s too flat there’s too much sky how do y’all take this”, normally from folks who come from mountain states.

You forgot there’s limestone cliffs in North Central Iowa by Mason City. It’s at the Lime Creek Nature Center and they have great trails for walking dogs. (Mind you I haven’t been able to do the trails in years between health problems and moving out of state)

Keep your untrained growling rude small dogs away from my service dog we’re just outside so Crowley can use the restroom. Us leaving the side walk and doing everything we can to get away from you should be a good enough a hint we want left alone plus if you followed social distancing my knee would still be working right now because Crowley wouldn’t have jerked to get away from your uncontrolled dog.
