Hello,

I am completing my dissertation on the effect medically transitioning has on the quality of life of transgender individuals.

I need to gain as many participants as possible in order to make this study stand out. My hope is that in the future I can publish my findings to add to the literature as it there is very little in this topic area.

The study will take around 15-20 minutes to complete, it’s a series of tick boxes.

Let’s show the world of psychology we are here, we count and we are important. Waiting times are ridiculously long, we need more gender clinics and professionals to reduce these wait times and the way we can show how much these are needed is by providing statistics to show this.

I myself am transgender, so this study is by a trans person, for trans people.

Some ways to make life easier on trans people:

❤ Introduce yourself with what pronouns you use. This helps letting people know your pronouns and finding out people's pronouns a more common practice, therefore making it easier for trans people to get correctly gendered. It also helps with telling people your trans friends pronouns without "outing" them

💙 Use "they" more. Just because someone has long hair, doesn't mean they're female. Not assuming pronouns saves trans people (& you) from a lot of embarrassment and distress

💚 Stop gendering everything. Clothing is cloth, soap is soap, just because it looks or smells a certain way doesn't mean it's "women's" or "men's" Stopping this will not only help trans people who hear you from being ashamed of using something for "the wrong gender", but will also help enforce the idea of unisex marketing, creating a more comfortable experience for trans people everywhere.

💛Stop with the "male or female" Not everyone fits into those boxes, & acknowledging that will help trans peeps you love feel more comfortable around you & opens other people up to the spectrum of gender.

💜 Educate yourself on trans topics. This will not only help you be a more supportive friend, but will also help you keep others informed!

❤Reach out to struggling trans people. Let them know that there are people who accept them for who they are, & see them in a positive light. Many trans people have no support.

💙 Stand up for trans people when you see someone bashing them.

💚 Donate to lgbt+ organizations when you can. Even $5 can help. If it wasn't for lgbt+ originations many trans people would never be able to transition, or even live.

💛 Know what is appropriate. I'm all for educating yourself, but sometimes certain questions should be saved for close friends or google. If you wouldn't feel comfortable answering the equivalent to your question to the same person, it's probably best not to ask them. (I.e. don't ask a trans man how he has sex if you wouldn't feel comfortable telling him you're favorite position.) Also, just because you'd feel comfortable doesn't make it okay. Read social ques, & know who you're talking to.

💜 Spread awareness. Share positive trans posts, correct people who step out of line, help people be informed,

💖 Most importantly: Respect & support people regardless of how they identify.

Something I will NEVER understand about transphobic/confused cis-het people is their inability to understand our gender in relation to our sexuality/romantic attraction. No matter what it “doesn’t line up” I’ve genuinely heard all of these towards either myself or others Referring to me & my girlfriend “If you like girls then why not just stay a lesbian ? You’re still part of the gay community. You don’t have to be a boy.” Referring to my ex (Trans guy) & me “If you want to be a guy and they wanna be a guy, how can yall be together? I don’t understand how sex would work if you both transition. Plus aren’t people like you suppose to like girls?” Referring to a ftm friend & their cis husband (they have a kid together now) “ they’re obviously not a boy if they’re gonna get pregnant. Plus I mean, if they are really a boy, why would they sleep with a boy? It just doesn’t add up?” Referring to an asexual friend “if you don’t wanna have sex, why doesn’t it matter what genitals you have? Just stay a girl”

Help me with top surgery

Between suddenly having to move, having car repairs the same day my phone gets shattered, my wife losing her job unexpectedly…my top surgery funds were nearly depleted. We’ve been busting our asses and doing everything in our power to make the rest of it up by the 1st-2nd week of August for my surgery. I need another $2,915 for my top surgery. I’ve sold everything I can and have exhausted all other options. I will update what is needed. My PayPal email is [email protected]. I do some freelance writing which tells you how hard I’m working towards this goal. I just need a little extra help. I tried a GoFundMe once before but quickly deleted it after realizing I was closer to my goal and…well, I didn’t want to ask for donations unless I absolutely needed it. Now I actually need it. Top surgery tomorrow. I stopped in front of the bathroom mirror before I had a wash and kind of just stared at my chest for a bit. I was very aware of the fact that this is the last time my body will look like this. I was worried for a moment that I wanted to back out or I would miss it the way it is. But I didn’t feel sad or scared, just uncertain. Over the years, my body has been changing constantly, I started my transition at the tail end of puberty so it was still changing then and then binding and hormones changed it to, and so did the years long episode of depression I survived because I barely ate. So, change is nothing new. I’ve come to feel very neutral about my chest most of the time, when it once gave me great feelings of dysphoria. Before reaching this point I went through a phase is simply detaching any association that tied it to ‘me’. I viewed my body like an artist viewing a model for drawing. And then my boyfriend helped me love my body by not even trying at all and I didn’t realise he did so until now. But while I love my curves and my flats and my soft and sharp edges, I still feel incredibly neutral about my chest. I mulled this all over a few weeks ago after my pre-op. Again I was afraid I’d regret my decision and then I thought about what life after top surgery meant for me (after the stitches and tiredness and limitations involved in recovery). I won’t ever have to check my chest when I’m out and about. I won’t have to feel like I’m not flat enough and be overwhelmed with dysphoria and anxiety the rest of the day. I won’t have to feel self conscious every time I run or throw my arms up into the air or when I stand close to other people. I won’t have to try and ignore my boyfriend chastising me for wearing a binder too long all the while knowing that my chest hurts and I need to stop pushing my body so hard. I won’t have to take days off of work or university because I over did it and cannot possibly bind due to the pain. I won’t have to dangerously overheat if I want to go out and actually enjoy my summers. I can feel comfortable enough to go swimming again. And that one is making me choked up. I used to love swimming so much. I love the water and for 6 years I haven’t been able to swim due to dysphoria and heck I was never comfortable with my body out before then either. Top surgery means freedom for me. And it also means a kind of stopping point in my transition because while yes hormones will still change me and the other surgery is always an option available, I feel like this is the last major step I need to take to feel comfortable in my own skin. And that feels incredible.

Edit: Feel free to reblog this if you’re so inclined. I don’t see enough dialogue about trans people questioning their transition and having doubts and it’s important that people just starting to explore this part of themselves (or even those who’ve been doing it for years) know it’s okay to question and have doubts! It’s natural. It’s a big undertaking and a lot of big changes. It doesn’t make you any less valid and doesn’t undermine your identity regardless of the outcome of your questions.

Welcome home they all say As I walk into a strangers house

I’m lost It’s a beautiful home But it’s not mine Nor do I want it to be

I pace and hyperventilate “What’s wrong?” They ask But they don’t understand when I tell them that these walls aren’t the color I feel they should be Nor when I explain the flooring is painful on my feet

There is a couch where I want an empty space And a chair where I’d rather a table be What the house says about me to others is not true This house is just not for me

I’m not comfortable here And I wish I could leave But the doors are locked And the windows won’t budge And there’s just no way out

So I decided since I can’t escape I’ll just redecorate I’ll make this house feel like a home I’ll make it feel like I belong

But no matter what I change No one can see Past how the house use to be

They tell me it looked better before That I’m wasting my time That it’ll never be what I’m wanting That I’m out of my mind

The spectators make me feel hopeless The house makes me broke I don’t know what to do I don’t know how to cope
