shockwave: a moment of silence, please
predaking: why, what’s wrong?
darksteel: who died?
shockwave: no one, i just wanted you guys to shut up
Some kid in 4019: Hey, look at this weird construction of an ancient civilization. My universal translator says it reads something like “This is not a place of honor.”…?
Some other kid: Oh yeah I’ve heard of this. It’s a dank meme from the 21st century
First kid: What does it mean?
Second kid: Fuck if I know, let’s go inside.
oh no
Honestly the whole system is doomed to fail there is nothing u can say or do that will prevent humans from looking inside a locked box. Even w people knowing what is inside nuclear containment areas people today would still go inside to look if we werent here actively preventing them. Pandoras box is not a moral tale its just a description of what humanity is like. The only way to stop people from going somewhere u dont want them to is to make it physically impossible for them to get there and thats a lost cause if youre working on a scale of 10s of thousands of years.
Pandoras box is not a moral tale its just a description of what humanity is like
Exactly.
“Some humans would do anything to see if it was possible to do it. If you put a large switch in some cave somewhere, with a sign on it saying ‘End-of-the-World Switch. PLEASE DO NOT TOUCH’, the paint wouldn’t even have time to dry.”
- Terry Pratchett, The Thief of Time
“‘And there’s the sign, Ridcully,’ said the Dean. ‘You *have* read it, I assume. You know? The sign which says “Do not, under any circumstances, open this door”?’
‘Of course I’ve read it, said Ridcully. ‘Why d'yer think I want it opened?’
‘Er… why?’ said the Lecturer in Recent Runes.
‘To see why they wanted it shut, of course.’*
*This exchange contains almost all you need to know about human civilization. At least, those bits of it that are now under the sea, fenced off or still smoking.
–Terry Pratchett, Hogfather
“Probably the last sound heard before the Universe folded up like a paper hat would be someone saying, “What happens if I do this?”
-Terry Pratchett, Interesting Times
Pterry had a lot to say about humans being Like That. (And for a while he worked as a Press Officer for an electric company that had several nuclear power plants, right after the whole Three Mile Island thing - bringing us full circle to the original post.)
I can’t believe Terry Pratchett is calling me out like this.
This picture is so holy and gentle to me
There’s math that can really put something plainly and clearly in most people’s mind.
Please do your research! There is so much misinformation out there and a lot of lies.
Everyone should know the truth so please try to know as much as you can so you can spread awareness and help!
Free Palestine🇵🇸✌️
the cognitive dissonance displayed in some posts about palestine by white americans etc is absolutely fucking astounding. i really really need you to understand that the horrific genocidal process of land expropriation we are witnessing in sheikh jarrah is how all of israel was settled, how every settler colony was established, and that that violence and theft are ongoing not just in occupied palestine but where you live. in the united states and canada and australia and new zealand and new caledonia and french polynesia and the french antilles and and and. and that if you don’t understand settlerism, the ideology behind it and the mechanisms through which it is enacted; if you do not see the material connection between standing rock and gaza, you cannot be effective allies to palestinians because you do not actually understand what is happening in palestine. that the dispossession and murders have an end goal, and it is the establishment of a colonial state that looks like yours. of a country where natives don’t exist, or exist in such minuscule numbers that large scale resistance becomes impossible. the end goal is annihilation. what appears like “senseless” brutality does have a purpose, and it is a purpose that is fundamentally incompatible with the existence of palestinians. and when you see pictures and videos from jerusalem, you need to remember that the land you are standing on was and continues to be settled through the same processes. not so that you can feel useless guilt, not to derail from the urgency of the situation in palestine; but specifically so that you can contextualize the genocide of palestinians and where it fits in the colonial timeline. so that you can understand talks of two state solutions and nuance and “both sides” the same way you understand manifest destiny and unceded land and one-sided treaties. and so that you can finally develop an internationalist political approach to indigenous struggle and liberation and imperialism, and start fighting the correct enemies where you live in the belly of the beast, because that is what you have to offer and what will help colonized people everywhere.
Honestly if your anxiety is so bad that you can’t read like… something in the horror genre that I wrote (and tagged correctly) without tagging the post I made with “this literally made me have an anxiety attack i’m panicking omg my dereality is acting up” maybe you SHOULDN’T INTERACT WITH ME, because I’m a horror fan, I’m very open about being a horror fan, and I don’t like being guilt tripped over and over about a harmless piece of “creepy” writing I made!!
I’m talking about this kind of… growing group I see on this site and other sites who blames horror content creators for their anxiety issues that the creators have no control over?
For example, Adam Ellis drew a pretty good horror comic about the ghost of a creepy nurse (it was not graphic in any way, and was fairly tame) and posted this DM he received about it on his Twitter:
For any concerned, Adam Ellis put absolutely no id’ing info on this post, so the person who sent it is safely anonymous. But I honestly hate this so much. If you are THIS afraid of a drawing of a creepy ghost, you should not engage with media that is LABELLED AS A HORROR COMIC! Many people with anxiety (including myself) create horror as an outlet for our own fears–Ellis even discussed the fact that his comic was tied to his very real fears of doxxing and harassment by certain fans/enemies online. Do you have any idea how genuinely horrible it feels to be told “this thing you created for fun/to vent caused me direct and terrible mental damage?”
In short, stop being a manipulative, guilt-tripping asshole to horror creators. Stop engaging with horror media if you are so, so viscerally distressed by it that you send genuinely cruel things to people in an attempt to force them to apologize to you. A lot of horror creators use horror as an outlet to vent THEIR anxiety, and you are an asshole for trying to increase their anxiety by telling them that they “hurt you” by writing horror. G’night.
^^^^^ Figure out your boundaries and then HONOR THEM YOURSELF.
Example: I love Horror as a genre, but I have certain types I can’t tolerate as well. I started listening to The Magnus Archives, which is a fantastic podcast, well put together, and utterly fascinating. But I was listening to it in December when my Seasonal Affective Disorder is at its worst, and I realized it was negatively impacting my mental health. My anxiety and depression were getting worse. So you know what I did?
I just stopped listening to it. I said “this is really good but right now it’s not really good for me so I’m going to move on to other things for the time being, maybe someday I’ll be in a better place to handle it and come back but for now I’ll just go watch The Haunting of Hill House again”
THAT’S ALL YOU HAVE TO DO. Step away. You do NOT need to tell a content creator about the problems you have with their content when it is WELL MARKED and your problem is I DON’T LIKE THIS GENRE.
I get that some things hit you hard out of nowhere, unexpectedly, and yeah that can really really suck. But it’s STILL not the content creator’s fault.
You can learn things about your own boundaries and move forward without being an asshole about it.
You are the curator of your internet experience.
YOU.
Nobody else.
If you are unable to handle this responsibility, you need to log off.
Also, for fuck’s sake, don’t send an unfollow notification that boils down to “I really like parts of you, so it’s horrible of you to not stop being the parts I don’t like so I can enjoy you without discomfort.” I mean, for someone who’s creeped out by horror, that person seems surprisingly fine with “cut away parts of yourself for my viewing pleasure.”
You liking someone does not create an obligation in them to be likeable. You liking someone does not create an obligation in them to be perfect. You liking someone does not create an obligation in them to not be anything you dislike. Sometimes stepping away from something that discomforts you is going to cost you access to something you like, because they’re a package deal. That sucks, but that’s life, and you have to choose, and not guilt trip or whine about it, because it’s not anybody else’s obligation to cut themselves in two to give you just the parts of them you want.
(I mean, you could also use the fucking tag blacklist function, read the notes, et cetera, because a lot of people and places are pretty good about describing what’s in the tin—I have favorite authors who’ve written things I’m never going to read—but if you’re going to go around acting personally betrayed that another whole-ass human being exists for themselves and not to please and cater to you, you never appreciated them properly in the first place.)
You are responsible for curating your online experience.
Fun fact, The Questing Beast of Arthurian Legend is the result of people attempting to describe what a giraffe was, then being explained and drawn by people who have never actually seen it.
The Questing Beast was said to have a head and neck of a snake (long neck), body of leopard (coat pattern), hind legs of a lion (tufted tail) and feet of a deer (”hooves:).
I’m having emotions at this artwork. It’s caught between fright and awe; fascination and fear.
Behold, a unicorn.
He got two horns tho
