"I used to imagine I was a mermaid, you know," Ed said, tilting her face to look up at Stede. "When I was really young. I was scared of the water at first, did I ever tell you that? But Ma made sure I learned; she was terrified I'd fall off a dock someday and not know how to get back up. So I pretended I could swim off into the whole ocean and never be scared once. Eventually I pretended so hard it worked. Plus," she said after a moment, "the tits were a bonus."
"I don't know, you grew up with some pretty nice tits after all," Stede said, tweaking one of her nipples until she swatted him away, grinning. "Do you know, I used to pretend that same thing."
last day of @transfem-ed-week : mermaid! please enjoy this silly thing I wrote on my phone at the beach this morning. to everyone involved with contributing to or putting on this event: I love you, we are holding hands, how does it feel to be the most correct and sexy people on planet earth forever
blood running hot, night chills // mature // 1943 words
Stede sits with his beer and watches her smile, watches her trace idle fingers through her hair; steeple her fingers delicately over the little songbird at her collarbone. His heart aching, bursting, spilling hot and vivid into his chest cavity. It’s the sort of thing that could kill a man, loving like this. Luckily, Stede’s always been a little hard to kill.

TRANSFEM ED IS FINALLY A CANONICAL TAG ON AO3
❤❤❤❤
[ID: a comic of ed from “our flag means death.” she is looking at a page in a book with a picture of the kraken, which she tears out. underneath it is a page with a drawing of a mermaid. her eyes widen and she sees the page with her as the mermaid. she slams the book shut, still wide-eyed, with emphasis lines around her. end ID.]
@transfem-ed-week || mermaid || what if ed had kept the book that had the blackbeard page for sadgirl breakup reasons and gotten something… different out of it 🤔🤔

She had a particularly grand collection of expensive scarves that she used in all manner of creative ways, and that was perhaps the most traditionally feminine thing about her wardrobe. When she wanted to get dressed up, she still preferred the rich man’s kit of richly colored frock coat and breeches.
On the other hand, these gowns were all in peach, lavender, turquoise, pink– colors that Stede favored, not Ed’s deep jewel tones. They had trimmings that bordered on the excessive, tassels and bows and rosettes, things that, when they were on Ed’s clothing, he tended to worry off with his fingers without noticing his own fidgeting until they were gone. No, these gowns, now that Stede was thinking about it, were definitely for him.
Light bloomed in his chest and he smiled, pressing one hand to his own cheek in sudden overwhelming fondness.
omg it’s @transfem-ed-week fine fabrics day I have been WAITING for this one
okay so the fic I am sharing today (it’s another older one) is actually really not that deep, BUT it gave me a chance to get into gender presentation a bit into a way that was really fun for me to think through. this is just like. peak genderfucking queer men to me. Stede is cis, he’s doing drag, he’s having a fantastic time and he feels beautiful. Ed is genderfluid, he swaps pronouns and dresses less mainstream masculine than Stede does on a daily basis, BUT this isn’t her normal look either– this is dress-up for her too. it creates a way for them to experience gender together, even though one is cis and one is trans, in a way that I hope is very sweet to everyone else as it was for me.
I have been saying since day one that Stede and Ed are butch4butch to me, which I think does not necessarily occur to everyone because people have certain ideas about what butch is. but they absolutely both read specifically as faggy butch to me (though in slightly different fonts) and their dynamic also feels very like that to me? I feel sometimes like they are trying to out-chivalry each other in their own ways, which I love, and the way they play off each other and get more flamboyant in each other’s presences also feels that way to me.
so the fun part about this for me is really getting into the finer details of my transfem Ed headcanons. I’m gonna share another one tomorrow where I’m going to talk about how nice it was to write a character whose gender comes entirely from euphoria instead of dysphoria, but other than that aspect I did base a lot of her on me, as a person who gets variously read, and variously identifies, as a butch and as a fem queer man and as gnc in a whole variety of ways. some you get a say in, some you construct very carefully, and some are going to be put on you whether you want them or not. you sit in a whole bunch of boxes at once, or a bunch of different ones depending on the context and on who’s looking at you, and the whole time you don’t really fit into any of them. which sounds (and can be) kind of sad and alienating, but I actually find it to be a really lovely place to exist the vast majority of the time, which is a lot of what I try to express when I write Ed.
I feel like the show has a lot of this feeling woven into it too, by letting all the characters be so normal and human, for groups of queer people. not normal as in like, the societal norm, but as in the normal you get when you walk into a good weird gay club that doesn’t have the aggressively white-cis-gayboy vibe going on, or a queer community center that isn’t entirely made up of college students, and everyone there is just completely different and impossible to easily pin down. they don’t feel made up for a Show About Gay People, they feel like the casting director just walked into Ye Olde Allways Lounge or wherever and started grabbing people.
anyway, this fic in no way intelligently discusses any of that, it’s really just a short thing about outfits, but EYE wanted to use it as an excuse to do so, so here ya go!

Ed doesn’t like being on land. When the ship runs aground (again), Stede decides to give her some good memories of the shore.
A day late, but I wrote a little something for Transfemme Ed Week: Day 3! I imagine the beach is a bit of a fraught place for Ed at this point in her life, but I like to imagine they can fix that together
it was old cloth / blue-black, and fragile as pressed flowers / he took it / boldly, as if to say, it is no crime

silk, latin lace, and envy // mature // 2029 words
One of the things he loves the most is wearing these pretty, girlish pieces with his own clothes. Blending them into his wardrobe until it almost feels like this could work. That he could step out onto the deck with the dawn’s break in his mean old hobnails and some salty scrap of a t-shirt over a silk slip, and nobody would bat an eye.

For the @transfem-ed-week day 5: younger years. Somehow it became an excuse to draw Ed as a kid 😊
It’s transfem Ed week! I’ve mostly been writing for it, but I really wanted to illustrate the fic I wrote for day one. The fic is called “Blackbeard’s Staymaker” and it’s about Ed getting fitted for a pair of stays
I’m not exactly happy with the art, but if I don’t call it done now, I’ll never finish it
