Watched a documentary about abuse and advice one guy said to give children was, "Tell them that if someone is hurting them, to tell someone - and don't just tell one person. Tell as many people as possible, and keep telling as many people as possible until the abuse stops." and i really liked that

Bc so many ppl focus on the idea of telling A Trusted Adult, but even a well-meaning individual can fuck up and let abuse fall through the cracks or not know what to do

Whereas if a child tells LOADS of adults AND other kids, there's far less opportunity for an abuser to do damage control

Consistently telling their story and spreading it around disempowers the abuser to control and coerce the flow of information, or to utilise gaps and weaknesses in systems of reporting or welfare to isolate the child

Just really good advice. Not suprised I don't hear it more often.

the american south is the most racially diverse and poorest region of the united states, and any political sentiment that treats the south is stupid or expendable is inherently racist and classist. a lot of y'all are racist and classist. the south is also the heart of american culture. argue with a wall. you cannot deny that everybody in the entire world does not emulate artists from atlanta. there is vested interest in keeping the south poor and uneducated BECAUSE this is the most racially diverse region in this country. if you actually give a fuck about progress, you would fight for the south, not mock us.

the emphasis on mental health services above things like reliable access to food and housing as a means to curve chronic homelessness is an attempt to sidestep the core issue by hoping that people facing the constant violence of being unhoused can simply bootstrap their way into better circumstances (or at least being less evidently homeless in public), but what's especially jokerfying is when you see exactly how even people who do it "right" are being set up to fail. housed people who work shitty minimum wage jobs get depressed. housed people spend their off time doing recreational drugs as a way to unwind after a long day. housed people who work full time can still barely make rent. what lies at the end of getting clean is a pressure cooker of forces cornering people back into poverty, mental illness and addiction. it's affirming in a way to know that no matter how many institutions wax about compassion and concern, "gaslight yourself into thinking everything is fine" is still the advice that everyone gets from the top down.

On this day, 6 July 1992, Black trans activist and sex worker Marsha P. Johnson's body was found in the Hudson River. She is most famous for participating in the Stonewall rebellion, which sparked a global movement for LGBT+ liberation, but she also spent years doing radical organising on the ground. Johnson took part in the Gay Liberation Front and the demonstration on the anniversary of the beginning of the Stonewall riots which became Pride. She then co-founded Street Transvestites Action Revolutionaries with her friend Sylvia Rivera, a radical grouping which also provided housing and support for gay, gender nonconforming and trans youth. Later she threw herself into AIDS activism, becoming an organiser in ACT UP. All the while Johnson engaged in survival sex work and was constantly harassed by police, being arrested over 100 times. After her body was discovered, police ruled her death a suicide, despite her having a massive head wound. Friends and activists insisted that Johnson wasn't suicidal, and highlighted evidence that she may have been murdered. Eventually in late 2012 the NYPD reopened the case as a possible homicide. It remains unsolved. And that this is actually a really fun, low cost way to not only access news and larger cultural magazines, but also to get free patterns for many different crafts that you can screenshot if need be and that lower the financial barriers to entry for trying new things

From my experience working in both academic and public libraries, many libraries are use it or lose it funding-- I have to say this because a lot of patrons feel guilty for how much they use the library and how often they're using it funny enough, but the worst thing you can do for libraries is not try out new features and not use what's already given to you as much as possible.

The numbers that come as a result of your patronage are how most libraries justify their continued existence in times of financial hardship, which sucks but, go check out some magazines on Libby!

"Today, a dead body is an alien entity that we encounter briefly in a hospital, funeral home, or place of worship, but in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, people tended to die at home rather than in hospitals, and the body, imbued with religious and social significance, was lovingly cared for in a way that bound the dead person to his family and society.

The corpse was carefully bathed and groomed and postmortem photographs, portraits, or other images were often created and distributed. This care of the body certified the person's meaning and status as a member of a family and community. Dissection, however, gave the corpse a very different meaning, limiting him to a bit of useful flesh, an object to be surgically severed from his community, treated with disdain, then discarded like trash.

For Blacks, anatomical dissection meant even more: it was an extension of slavery into eternity, because it represented a profound level of white control over their bodies, illustrating that they were not free even in death. Burial rituals were so psychologically important that insurance companies sold Blacks a macabre "social security" by collecting relatively high weekly payments towards funeral expenses.

Physicians, however, ascribed Blacks' horror of postmortem dissection to superstition, complaining that even during epidemics they avoided hospitals because they feared ending up on anatomists' slabs. But whites quietly shared this revulsion, including doctors, who avoided dissecting the bodies of their colleagues."

When I was about 15 I finally convinced my parents to let me go to therapy.

I was vaguely openly queer, as in, I hadn't told my parents I was trans yet but I had an online girlfriend when I was 14 that they knew about, I was publicly identifying as pan, and was involved in my high school GSA, etc. and I needed a private space outside of school and the internet where I could process my traumas while being out as trans. As such it was really important to me that I had a queer or queer friendly therapist. Now that was hard to come by in Indiana even in the 2010's (especially bc a lot of the ones advertised were covert conversion therapists) but we did finally find one that took our insurance. A middle aged, married cis lesbian, who advertised as having experience with trans clients*.

I didn't know this until my early 20's when my mom and I were reconciling her poor reaction to my eventual public coming out as trans at 18, but my therapist was very convinced that I was not trans when I came out to her. She shared the fact that I told her I was trans to my parents and explicitly told all four of them she doubted me in her sessions with them about me.

I'm thinking about this all because the anniversary of my dad's passing was recently and I've been doing a lot of reflecting on my conflicting feelings about the ways he treated me as a teen (that was part of why I was in therapy, and why my parents were having sessions with my therapist without me). Then the memory of a day where he took me to Barnes & Noble and made me pick out several fashion magazines because "he thought I needed to be more feminine" came to mind and it clicked.

My therapist probably told him to do that.

It always struck me as very odd that my dad did that because while he was always kind of a "girl dad" with me growing up, he was also the first parent to fully embrace me when I publicly came out and never had any issue with my general lack of femininity when I was younger - in fact he often encouraged it and was very progressive about my upbringing... Until I started seeing my therapist and suddenly he was very concerned about me being a young woman and not being "feminine enough".

If that isn't a perfect example of transandrophobia, anti-trans masculinity, the gendered correction young people perceived as young women experience when exploring our genders/gender expression, and the private violence cis queer adults in positions of power can inflict on trans youth - particularly that adult cis women can inflict upon trans masculine youth, I don't know what is.

*It turned out, her only experience with a trans client was someone who had previously identified as a trans woman and was detransitioning. She told me this in one of our last sessions. First what a violation of her ethics as a therapist to tell me about that person and second, of course she would lie about having all of this experience treating trans people and then go on to convince my parents I wasn't trans - genuinely leading to serious trauma with my mom that didn't fully heal until a few years ago!!

Fun facts about the magazines, I literally picked one of them because there was an interview with Karen Gillan where she talked about being on Doctor Who and that was all I cared about. I read that one article several times a day for a few weeks like the young autistic Whovian I was.

I also took the magazines and cut them up and turned them into several very angsty teenager collages about the gender and misogyny of it all, and that was very cathartic in the moment.
