in the 2018 aotearoa based study on the health and wellbeing being of trans and nonbinary people, done by âcounting ourselvesâ, there were 1,178 participants, 45% of them were nonbinary (roughly 530), 29% of them were trans men (roughly 341) and 26% of them were trans women (roughly 306).
when asked if anyone since the age of 13 had ever tried to have sex with them against their will, 50% of trans men said yes. 33% of trans women said yes. when asked if anyone since the age of 13 had ever made them have sex against their will, 33% of trans men said yes. these rates are second highest, around 5% less than nonbinary people. 23% of trans women said yes. these results are three times higher than that of the women in the general population of aotearoa. i also will note that disabled trans people were more likely in this survey to report someone had sex with them against their will.
in the 2022 aotearoa based study on the health and wellbeing being of trans and nonbinary people, done by âcounting ourselvesâ, there were 2,631 participants, 56% of them were nonbinary (roughly 1,473), 22% were trans women and 22% were trans men (roughly 578 each.)
[note that this question is solely about attempted or successful rape, and does not include any other form of forced sexual contact] when asked if anyone had ever forced them or tried to force them to have sex when they did not want to, 40% of trans men said yes. this rate is second highest to nonbinary people afab at 51%. the third highest are trans women at 32%. which is drastically higher than both women and men in the general population. disabled people and mÄori people were at higher risk as well.
in the 2018 australian study on the sexual health of trans and gender diverse people, done by the kirby institute, there were 1,613 participants, 39.2% of them were nonbinary people afab (632), 24.6% were trans women (397), 21.9% were trans men (353) and 14.3% were nonbinary people amab (231).
when asked if they had ever been forced or frightened into doing something sexually they did not want to do, 54.2% of trans men said yes. second to highest behind nonbinary people afab at 66.1%. 44.5% of nonbinary people amab said yes, and trans women said yes with the lowest rates at 36.1%. 69.6% of all trans people who had experienced sexual violence or coercion experienced it multiple times.
in the 2015 u.s national survey study on the trans population done by the national center for transgender equality, there were 27,715 participants, 35% of which were nonbinary (roughly 9,700), 33% were trans women (roughly 9,145) and 29% were trans men (roughly 8,037).
when asked if they had ever in their lifetime experienced sexual assault, 51% of trans men said yes. a rate second highest to nonbinary people afab at 58%. nonbinary people amab said yes at a 41% rate, and once again, at the lowest, 37% of trans women said yes. the rates are particularly high for trans men of color, with 71% of indigenous trans men, 67% of middle eastern trans men and 58% of multiracial trans men experiencing sexual assault. the rates were also particularly high overall for trans people who do sex work (72%) and disabled trans people (61%). out of all trans participants, 47% said the assault came from a friend or acquaintance, 34% said it was a partner or ex partner, 30% said it was a stranger and 25% said it was a relative.
