If you are making an animation, either 2D or 3D, especially of a person doing some sort of visually complex action, it’s not that unusual to take a video of someone doing the same thing. Hell, it’s just about the same as taking photos of a model or oneself, but, yknow…. In video form.

If you’d like a fun example of people doing this, there had been a recording made of animators and artists working on Jurassic Park scampering around a parking lot, that was used as reference for the scene where Gallimimus run over and past some of the main stars (I’d love to give the video but I can’t find it, I did find interviews referencing it however).
