Went to the grocery store with my kindergartener. We weighed some bananas: 2 pounds even. We weighed a watermelon: 4 pounds even. We weighed some mangos: a little over 1 pound. We weighed the watermelon AND the bananas: 6 pounds even.
“That’s funny” said the child “because 2+4=6 and two pounds and four pounds is six pounds. It’s like the same as math!”
“What happens if you add 6+1?”
“SEVEN”
“What if we put one pound of mangos on the scale?” <mangos added>
“IT’S THE SAME!!”
“OK, what’s 7-4?”
“Three?”
“What if we take the four pound watermelon off the scale?” <watermelon removed>
“Mama! Are you telling me math works In Real Life? Think of all the things you could measure!!”
it works! it helps!!!
the way starting arm-none-eabi-gdb is just flipping a coin
i accidentally got roped into making a tomodachi life mod for this lovely person because i thought they were asking for a simple .msbt replacement of the baby names
turns out they wanted the mechanic in the JP version of the game where babies are named a combination of their parents' first names, but in the USA version of the game
now, this is a lot more effort than it's worth since it would have to be a code mod, and i doubt they'll even use it since they play on the JP version of the game. but it's going to be fun to make. and that's all i care about.
while figuring out how to use gdb has put me miles ahead of where i once was, it's still nowhere near as powerful as Dolphin's memory engine. so it's going to be much harder, but i do think it's possible to narrow down what i'm trying to do:
(didn't know tumblr had list formatting)
stringsing exefs.elf brings up Child.msbt, the file where the bank of random baby names is located
this means that some way or another, i can set up a watchpoint to figure out where in the code.bin Child.msbt is accessed
once i have that, i can trace it around with gdb to my heart's content until i see the place that actually picks the baby's name
i can compare this with the jp version - this is gonna require me to do the whole exefs extraction i did with the us version, but i have that down already so it should be pretty painless
granted, it's a little easier to combine japanese names than english ones, but if i couldn't write a simple string concatenation algorithm in C i wouldn't deserve to be here
the interesting part will be attempting to fit that extra code in the same binary. surely, it can't be that complicated, right? ....
this is absolutely ignoring the 500 hurdles that are bound to be in the way, but as a general sketch it doesn't look impossible. great!
"Also worth nothing that after gdb crashes, if you restart gdb and re-attach a second time without restarting the target process, the attach works correctly."
what a piece of software 😭️ thanks fidgetingbits?

I'm getting a lot of "people who only like the "americans explaining a concept to each other: ok so imagine a burger..." meme explaining the "guy who has only seen The Boss Baby before watching his second movie: I'm getting a lot of Boss Baby vibes from this one" meme to each other: okay so imagine the "americans explaining a concept to each other: okay so imagine a burger..." meme..." vibes from this one
thank you dear mutual

Jarvis, pull up that variable meme.
i’m reminded of the developer of a mapping software who had a variable named ‘legend_handles’ that got refactored into ‘leg_handles,’ ‘leg_hands,’ and finally ‘feet’
i should really flatten down the css in my website because embedded css rules is only really supported recently. i tried to view it with an ipad from 2012 and threw up, but that's the hardware WORTH designing for
