"Retta had an astounding ability to draw powerful animals. She seemed to have a keen understanding of their moods and attitudes." -Frank Thomas

Retta Scott, inducted as a Disney Legend in 2000, is most notable as being the first credited female animator at Disney, as well as working in the story department for some time. Everyone at the studio was surprised to learn that Scott animated the powerfully striking hunting dogs near the end of Bambi. She came back to the studio after being laid off in 1941 to work on production backgrounds and Big Golden Book illustrations. 

Fun Fact: Scott stayed with her best friend Mary Blair while Blair’s husband was in the Navy.

mythology alphabet: p - psyche [the goddess of the soul, wife of Eros god of love]

She was once a mortal princess whose astounding beauty earned the ire of Aphrodite when men turned their worship from goddess to girl. Aphrodite commanded Eros make Psykhe fall in love with the most hideous of men, but the god himself fell in love with her and carried her away to his secret palace. However Eros hid his true identity, and commanded her never to look upon his face. Psykhe was eventually tricked by her jealous sisters into gazing upon the face of god, and he abandoned her. In her despair, she searched throughout the world for her lost love, and eventually came into the service of Aphrodite. The goddess commanded her perform a series of difficult labours which culminated in a journey to the Underworld. In the end Psykhe was reunited with Eros and the couple wed in a ceremony attended by the gods. Psykhe was depicted in ancient mosaics as a butterfly winged goddess in the company of her husband Eros. Sometimes a pair of Pyskhai are portrayed, the second perhaps being their daughter Hedone (Pleasure).

One afternoon, Stephen Colbert came in to the office. His show was about to premiere so he hadn’t spent much time in our studio. As he walked past me at my cubicle, he stopped and said, “You’re a new face, what’s your name?” I didn’t know what to really say, so I replied, “Oh, I’m just an intern.” Colbert looked at me a moment and then said: “Just an intern? Hey, look, everybody starts somewhere. I was just an understudy at one point, but that’s just a point in time. It’s not about where you are now, or even where you hope to go, it’s who you are that matters. I’m Stephen, who are you?” I introduced myself and we shook hands. “Don’t let your place in the world dictate who you are to anyone. We all have the same merit.” Then he was gone, but his words lingered.
