I was looking for a phone case on Amazon and stumbled upon this piece of official SU merchandise. I hate this fucking show.
things got a little heated in the gc today
Man I’m tired of live action remakes
i know Mike and Bryan are working on the Avatar live action series. Which bodes well for it considering the bar was set incredibly low in 2010. But the continuing idea that animation is a lesser way of telling a story that and that live action remakes are “how it was meant to be seen” just don’t sit well with me.
even with the most cutting-edge CGI, you’d be able to tell when a Fire Nation airship sorely stands out or when Appa has been superimposed in a shot. Every frame of the original show is so beautiful and animation made EVERYTHING feel like this world was completely realized. To date I’d argue it’s one of the most perfect examples of a well told and contained story. Everything felt fleshed out and lived in. What does live action bring to the table that was lacking 13 years ago? I dunno, man.
People forget the beauty of 2d animation
i understand that rose’s not-very-quartz-like palette is meant to be visual shorthand for her alignment with humans / the earth
but i feel from a worldbuilding / lore standpoint having the palettes swapped would have made some more sense so long as she still looks sort of human-adjacent / pleasing to the eye
the fact that PD could have masqueraded as a quartz – gems that, as far as we have seen (and we have seen a lot of quartz gems, counting the famethyst) consistently had pale hair as a largely undeviating trait – and not have been questioned at all is a little confusing in-universe
i get that she made the RQs so it can be handwaved but having to handwave it at all is kind of not great
ignoring the gem placement change (i’ll just believe that diamonds can rotate their gems), we’ve only ever seen reformations and shapeshifting use colors from the same general palette, not change their hues entirely. so this redesign would have their colors literally swapped / matching
but you could swap these around (and have rose as the more ‘human looking’ form) and still have a nicer palette anyway i think (less neon purpley-pink and more peachy/red toned, which is also closer to both irl gems)

If the theory that White Diamond and Pink Diamond once traded Pearls is true, making Pearl the original White Pearl and making White Pearl the original Pink Pearl…
And if the theory that White Diamond is capable of mind-controlling her Pearl, or the theory that White Pearl is moreso an extension of White Diamond herself, is also true…
Then could it be possible that White Diamond seems to be aware and knowing of everything… because she’s seen everything through Pearl’s eyes?
Everything that Pearl has seen, White Diamond has seen. Pearl’s idea for Pink to shapeshift into a Quartz gem, Pink changing her mind about colonizing the Earth, the formation of the Crystal Gems, Pink’s shattering, possibly even the birth of Steven… White knows it all through Pearl, and it’s likely that Pearl is completely unaware of that.
This makes even more sense if you think about the fact that all of Homeworld was aware of Pink’s return and ready for her to set foot on Homeworld again. The other Diamonds didn’t know anything. Not that Pink was still alive, not that their ships would get destroyed, they didn’t know about corruption, and they didn’t know that Pink’s ship would still be up and running. Somehow, White foresaw all of this and had Homeworld throw a welcoming party for Pink.
There’s literally only two ways that White would be able to see this. 1) White has a fancy Era 2 version of an Observation Orb like the one on the Moon Base, which she can use to keep eye on any place that gemkind has mapped or colonized; or 2) White was silently watching everything from the sidelines through the eyes of our Pearl, a Pearl she once personally owned.
Everything that Pearl has ever seen, White Diamond knows. And that’s scary.

When people act like Captain Underpants isn’t a revolutionary peice of children’s media:
So allow me to elaborate just a bit on this cuz it always sticks out in my mind that people(adults) tend to write it off as dumb kids fart jokes made into a book, but thats not the case. CU is revolutionary because it’s the only kids media I have ever seen that employs that form of comedy in a way that actually respects kids senses of humor, instead of just talking down to them.
So most movies and tv shows that use potty humor do it becuase they fully believe that kids DONT have a sense of humor. That kids can’t handle/comprehend actual well written jokes, so they have to dumb it down and throw in a fart or two(or three or four…) so that they will pay attention. This form of potty humor automatically assumes that all kids are dumb, and that the only way to get them to enjoy something is to fill it with non-jokes that kids will ‘understand’.
But CU is different. CU understands kids in a way that almost every other children’s media outlet doesn’t. CU can employ that humor becuase it doesn’t use them as a replacement for actual jokes. For real, sit down with a CU book and tally up all the jokes. Sure, there’s more than a handful of potty jokes, but there’s also a surplus of actually funny well written jokes that still get a laugh out of me to this day.
Like CU is hilarious, honest to god. It has brilliant situational humor, fun slapstick, dry wit, actual irony, satire, you name it and CU does it and does it well. It refuses to talk down to kids, it’s respects thier intelligence without sacrificing a single ounce of comedy. Sure, kids love dumb fart jokes, but most meds just uses it as a filler becuase they can’t be bothered to try. Think back to old kids shows, Spongebob for an example. Old Spongbob has some brilliant comedy writing, top notch. Go back and I swear adults can still enjoy watching it becuase humor is humor and when it’s done right you don’t grow out of it!! CU has all that an more!!!
Not to mention the satire of using ‘lesser’ humor as a hung middle finger to stuck-up adults who try to police what kids consume to the point of sanitizing everything. Think The Little Prince, the same principle is as work there. Adults forget. Adults are too literal, too boring, too trapped in their shallow mindsets to actually see the world and enjoy even the dumbest of jokes, and they, we, miss some amazing, life changing stuff.
CU is something else you guys, honestly it’s one of the most brilliant series or kids I’ve ever seen. It’s revolutionary in its understanding of children and it’s way of embracing potty humor is fucking revolutionary. It stuck with me and even now it’s a source of immense inspiration that helps me believe I can do what I want to do without sacrificing the fun in life. CU told me that even a distracted, misunderstood, queer, dyslexic, ADHD riddled kid who had dreams of being an artist could do just that! That I didn’t have to listen to the stuffy adults who wanted me to sit down and pay attention to the boring facts of life. That the ones who told me that I had to change to be ‘right’ were wrong. That there is so much more out there. That what makes me different could make me amazing.
What’s essential is invisible to the eye. And even the silliest, most low-brow jokes can be worthwhile. Humans are gross! Life is gross and it would do us a lot of good to embrace that and let kids be who they are without forcing them to change. To remember that kids are smart, and deserve respect, especially in the humor department.
Captain Underpants is amazing guys. It really, really is.
When people act like Captain Underpants isn’t a revolutionary peice of children’s media:
idk how sucrew does it but the designs got worse. the pilot artstyle + designs were my favorite. very fluid and fun looking with nice colors and shapes. first season is alright. subtle color palettes that are nice to the eyes. amethyst has cute hair n face (she got em cat eyes!) and pearls clothing here is way more elegant, and aesthetic looking.
and then what we got now is, lots of neon. they give me a headache. proportions are whack. amethyst has a face change. pearls clothing isnt that soft looking anymore rather its super saturated looking. hmm.
What really gets me is now Rebecca designed the gems with an influence of high fashion, now their clothes don't look like anything, they barely have any detail, and the characters never pose to indicate any kind of attitude anymore. The gems are supposed to be confident, powerful and emotional. So why do they always stand upright in the show with clenched fists at their sides instead of something like the first image that conveys an attitude?
The poses are a longer post to deal with, but it pisses me off there's just no effort.
I do like Steven Universe- as an idea. The concepts it provides are interesting and I think if used well, could make a very enchanting experience. But the execution is so bad that the show isn’t anywhere near as good as it could be. At this point I just stay with the SU fandom as a way to pass time. I just wish I could be in awe of what SU is doing like everyone else, but I can see the flaws way too clearly to be enjoying this show.
Like the reveal of white diamond and white pearl, it’s interesting. Again, I like the ideas. However I don’t really feel like white diamond is some other worldly being or totally unreadable or creepy. I know alot of people feel that she is creepy- but because of my experience with lots of research in animation, directing, and just being aware of what better examples of a creepy unreadable character is like- she’s average. White diamond is not creepy at all.
Interesting, but not creepy. And to quote my friend, yellow is the angry diamond, blue is the sad diamond, pink is the happy diamond, and white is the edgy diamond. Can’t wait for a disappointing flood of cheap glitchy fanart and shitty attempts at being creepy.
I can’t take SU seriously.
I’m going to compare a scene from A Single Pale Rose, and a Adventure Time episode. I’ll be showing an example from both and why one of them fails at being a serious, emotional moment. https://youtu.be/YOvwCBjMFaw?t=460 <Adventure Time scene.
Bubblegum: It’s- it’s not that. I lost my hat… Marceline: We can get you another hat? Bubblegum: I lost my hat, lost my home, lost my people, I can’t even keep darn varmints out of my pumpkin patch. Marceline: Oh, Bonnie- Bubblegum: I tried.. I really really tried. I just- I thought if I shut everything out and focused on work it would all be ok. But look where that landed me… all I managed to do was push everyone away, I pushed you away. I’m sorry Marceline. I’ve been a real dinger to you.
This scene starts off with some jokey banter- nonetheless the tone is still down to earth. It’s still something serious, rather than throwing around cheap jokes. Especially with the following, when Bubblegum starts to cry. And while at first it seems sort of awkward with the hat dialogue, it continues and you realize it’s deeper than that. Her dialogue has meaning to it, and it’s not played off for a joke. This is dialogue that is written in a serious way. It was followed up in a serious way. Etc. This scene was able to be taken seriously with the way it was written, and how it was built up to this part. Now, let’s take a similar scene from SU.
Steven: Hi Pearl inside Pearl inside Pearl’s Pearl. You upset about the whole missing phone situation too? Pearl: No, it’s Rose. What was she thinking? She can’t have a baby.. Steven: Well, this is awkward. Pearl: What am I going to do when she disappears? I’m going to lose her, just like I lost my.. what was it you said?
Steven: Your cell phone? Pearl: My CELL PHONE!!! If you watched this episode, you would know that the episode built up to this scene with emoji jokes, and a joke about finding a phone, etc. Basically, bad jokes. Not a good start for a episode (Infact, I would say that the beginning of this episode made me feel like it was going to be a joke episode with how many shit jokes were forced into it) You get into this scene and immediately, Steven’s first sentence is a joke. “ Hi Pearl inside Pearl inside Pearl’s Pearl. “ Steven’s second sentence is a joke. “ Well, this is awkward. “ And then Pearl yelling, “ My CELL PHONE!!! “. All of this, this entire episode, had a bunch of jokes in it. Forced, badly written, badly timed, unnecessary jokes. How Pearl yells in this scene, all of this dialogue- how could it be perceived as anything but a joke? This isn’t some “PTSD survivor representation” that some people have been saying it is. Or a dramatic moment. It’s a joke. That’s all it is. If they wanted to have this be a serious moment, they wouldn’t have jokes. They wouldn’t have the ongoing gag about a lame phone. Why should Pearl even care about the dang phone? It’s a phone. Who cares. But it’s inserted in here for jokes. For cheap jokes. They could’ve done something similar with Bubblegum, for example. Pearl saying that she lost her phone, shes lost rose, etc. It could’ve been a comparison between the two, and how she feels like she is losing everything. But watching this I never thought that. I look at this scene, and I can’t comprehend anyone legitimately thinking this is a emotional scene. What sucks is that it’s not just this one episode. This happens in nearly every episode, especially the emotional ones. Crewniverse just loves jacking off to jokes plainer than flour.
