@trippytrippytiger
"the majority of religions oppress women" and so do the majority of societies! perhaps these things are related somewhat
the vast majority (although not all!) critiques of "religion" as a concept when you boil them down are really just "humans seeking to oppress others will use social constructs to do so."
& most people do not critically engage with the western construct of "religion" itself! people just take for granted this post-euro-enlightenment model of what religion means. which is where you get, at the worst, people criticizing "religion" who clearly genuinely do not know anything about any religion other than christianity (whatever kind they were raised with) & some vague half-facts about judaism and islam.
its also like. at the same time as (people living as) women have historically experienced religion as a tool of patriarchal control, it has equally been a feminized sphere of life. just in the western eurasian world, from the ancient mediterranean societies to medieval saints and nuns, people living as women have found personal existential autonomy and direction from their spiritual traditions, and cis men have viewed them negatively because of it. plato complained about how all the shrines in Athens were set up by women, but this was also a means for women to exist in the public sphere, to find meaning in their personal concerns and feelings and perception of the world, to connect with not just other women but also men and others who were similarly touched by these traditions. in late 19th-century southern Italy, facing the imperialist violence of the Risorgimento and brigandage wars, peasant women organized their communities in explicitly socialist and explicitly Catholic ways (from here):
A wave of popular unrest washed over Sicily at the close of the nineteenth century. In town after town, peasants mobilized labor strikes, occupied fields and piazzas, and looted government offices. While the island had a long history of revolt, this marked a new era of social protest. For the first time, women led the social movement and infused the struggle with their own mixture of socialism and spiritualism. The activity began in the autumn of 1892, in the towns surrounding Palermo, in the northwestern part of the island. In Monreale, women and children filled the central piazza shouting “Down with the municipal government! Long live the union!” After attacking and looting the offices of the city council, they marched toward Palermo crying “We are hungry!” waving banners with slogans connecting socialism to scripture. In Villafrati, Caterina Costanzo led a group of women wielding clubs to the fields where they threatened workers who had not joined the community in a general strike against the repressive local government. In Balestrate, thousands of women dressed in traditional clothes and also armed with clubs marched through the streets, demanding an end to government corruption. [...] In Piana dei Greci, thirty-six women were arrested after they occupied and then destroyed the municipal offices, throwing the furniture into the streets. [...] They celebrated the founding of the group as they would a religious festival, with music and food, and wove their political and spiritual ideologies together in their speeches. In the words of one woman, “We want everybody to work as we work. There should no longer be either rich or poor. All should have bread for themselves and their children. We should all be equal. . . . Jesus was a true socialist and he wanted precisely what we ask for, but the priests don’t discuss this.” [...]
the extreme patriarchy of the Catholic church still existed, and was still immensely harmful to many people. but existing alongside it was the lived Catholicism of peasant women whose fire for socialism was lit by their belief in God and Jesus and Mary. in all cases these people living as women could be depicted by as superstitious and irrational and driven by emotion and bodily sensation, not the proper logical rule-driven faith of the patriarchal state. which is another example of hyperobjectivity!
i'm ranting here but my point is that as in all things Its More Complicated Than That & it frustrates me to see people act like religion being used oppressively is 1) something unique to religion rather than a natural consequence of oppression and spiritual/existential traditions both existing in human cultures, or 2) brought up in a way that ignores the long history of oppressed people finding personal relief and collective vision and motivation for radical social change in religion. be nuanced about religion damn you
Truly disappointed in The Onion, this kind of conspiracy joke is such classic antisemitism. The comments they got show exactly what kind of people they drew out.
The Onion has always sucked with Jews. That's why I did the satire of the satire
They would never actually run something like this. It would actually imply they think Jews are human and would be viewed as "Punching Down."
The onion has sucked with normie Dems ever since they moved to NYC and started castigating themselves for the sin of 'Making Biden Look cool' while refusing to do drag Bernie. It's an "Original Sin" thing. Article is 6 years old, from when politico still had a couple of reporters. Bernie is the Pet Jew of the DSA-Hamas caucus so no surprise these cucklefucks deified him then too.
The beloved satire site still has its knives out … for everyone but one 78-year-old senator from Vermont.
But for some Onion writers, the whole episode left a sour aftertaste. Joe Garden, a former writer and feature editor for the Onion, wrote an apologetic essay for Vice in May, worrying that they made his retrograde attitudes seem too cute and harmless. The arrival of Trump, and the habit of other humor writers and comedy shows in treating him like a joke, crystallized why this is dangerous; Garden wrote that he wished the site at the time “had looked more at [Biden’s] actual career in politics … and tried to really puncture him, rather than just turning him into a clown. We helped make him more likable by inventing a version of Biden that never existed.” He concluded that “As a guideline, if the people you’re satirizing aren’t mad, then you should dig deeper.” When I asked Garden if he thinks the site now runs the risk of blunting its impact by going easy on Sanders in a similar fashion, he invoked the well-worn concept of “punching up,” or taking care to make sure the butt of one’s joke is deserving of such a status. “It’s one thing to take down a person sitting in a position of power,” Garden said. “There are plenty of things to make fun of [regarding] Sanders, but unless he’s actually displaying evil intent or becomes president, what’s the point?” It’s easy to imagine a more ambivalent humorist taking issue with such an argument that essentially gives Sanders a pass until January 2021 or beyond. Two of them I found willing to do so are among the founders of the Onion itself.
I think there's probably a moral element to doomerism where it's not just that they think that society is doomed, they think that it deserves to be doomed for its decadent and sinful ways, and they don't like the idea that it might somehow escape justice.
Oh, fuck OFF
For Your Enjoyment: Dr. McCoy enamored by a kitty cat alien
From "Double Blind" by Diane Duane, Tom Sutton, & Ricardo Villagran, collected in DC's The Best of Star Trek (1991)
This was so much fun to write. (Especially as the kitties were pretty much Bullshit Kitties With Guns, and McCoy was, well, McCoy.). :)
OP tells on themself. They say "I expect evil people to do evil things", and then characterize those people as.... cockroaches. Something that's not a person, not sentient, and not evil but just a force of nature.
Cockroaches aren't conspiring with techno fascists to kill kids and oppress minorities. Cockroaches don't want to inspect your daughter's genitals. Cockroaches don't choose again and again to hurt themselves as long as it hurts brown people more. Cockroaches don't know what they're doing and can't be held accountable for their actions, and the fact that you equate Republicans to cockroaches instead of actual people is TELLING.
PSA: tumblr user littlefuckinmonster is stealing human bones from cemeteries in Louisiana. Please don’t let them get away with this and spread the word/signal boost!
this post is officially a decade old now
For anyone who wasnt around when this happened, this was real. Littlefuckinmonster was actually stealing bones from cemeteries. She is the bone stealing witch. She was specifically stealing bones from poor people. She was arrested for it.
This is not a Goncharov, this literally happened, here’s the Wikipedia article about it.
KNOW YOUR HERSTORY.
Guys maybe someday I'll finish and post fanfiction again. That was a fun time. When I was doing that.
Saw this tweet from a tumblr post and ofc a few tankies got upset with the mention of the Soviet Union being raised as a parallel bad example
Yet these same people have no qualms comparing everything to the Nazi regime. Hmm
i'd just like to say it again for the people in the back: ethnicity, race, and nationality are DIFFERENT THINGS.
ethnicity = shared cultural characteristics including but not limited to language, food, music, dance, religion, and shared ancestry; learned through cultural transmission; can be changed throughout one's life provided that the ethnic community one is trying to join accepts them
race = a bullshit system of human categorization based solely upon looks; literally invented by europeans trying to sort humans like we are all different species; can also change over the course of someone's life if the necessary conditions are met (see: my great-great-grandparents being marked as non-white "Hebrew" immigrants in 1904 and then passing away right as Eastern Ashkenazi Jewish people began to fully assimilate into whiteness, eg the post-war period; also see the treatment of SWANA Muslims before and after 9/11); also a legal system in the US wherein those deemed "white" receive certain privileges denied to others based upon race science
nationality = one's country of origin and where they hold citizenship; those are sometimes the same and sometimes not; see for example a naturalized US citizen whose nationality might be both Dominican and American
now. why would someone get race and ethnicity, in particular, confused? you see, from the 16th to the 19th centuries, the word "race" both referred to the bullshit system and also to ethnic groups. additionally, in the post-colonial context, some ethnicities are based upon the system of race that was imposed upon settler colonies (for example, Black Americans, who were forcibly removed from their original ethnic communities and, in a show of remarkable resilience, created new and beautiful cultures). this has led to a lasting confusion on the two concepts.
you may be wondering: tzipi, why are you posting this?
because i need you to know that ethnoreligious groups are real. and i need you to know that jewish people are an ethnoreligious group with subethnicities (like Ashkenazim, Sephardim, Mizrahim, Persian Jews, Ethiopian Jews, etc). but that none of these groups are the "real Jews." and that we do, in fact, meet the definition of a distinct ethnic group with some similarities and differences across the many subethnicities that are contained within our ethnicity. we accept converts, who then become ethnically jewish, because ethnicity is not all about blood ties. AND ALSO. someone can be ethnically jewish without being religiously jewish, because they may share in the cultural practices that jewish people do and (usually, in this case,) have jewish heritage. such a person does not need to be Israeli to be ethnically jewish. "Israeli" is a nationality, not an ethnicity, at least right now.
just because, to the eye, we may appear to be different races does not make us "just a religion." some religious groups are not ethnoreligious groups, including (most) Muslims, Christians, and Buddhists, but that does not mean that jewish people are included in that category. thank you for coming to my tedtalk.
You listen to music regularly? Why? Have you even tried quitting? Could you quit? You get music stuck in your head? Wow. You're so ruined and music brained. I bet you make your partners listen to music with you when you have sex. Music addiction has really ruined a whole generation. You know it's not realistic to expect reverb in real life, right? You're probably so desensitized that you don't even feel anything anymore when you hear a bird singing that it wants some fuck.
I don't have a problem with people listening to music per se, but I do have a problem with the music industry exploiting & mistreating artists.
Personally, I abstain from all music in order to keep my hands clean but really music should just be illegal outright to protect musicians from abuse.
holy shit this person in the notes
sorry if this is a stupid and/or weird question but your response to that anon talking about people experiencing orgasms during childbirth made me wonder if there's a certain point in development after which it'd be weird for pregnant people to have sex or masturbate, since after a certain point the fetus(?) can hear? like, should people do it quietly or does it just not really matter? sorry again but i am genuinely clueless
should. should pregnant people have sex quietly so their baby doesn't hear?
okay even assuming your unborn child can hear you fucking. it's like having sex in front of your stuffed animals or your dog, dude. they have absolutely no understand of what is going on. they don't give a shit. at no point is any person who has ever or will ever be born going to go "oooooh man I think hearing my parents fuck while I was in utero really fucked me up actually" that's not how anything works. they're too busy going "mmm yummy amniotic fluid" they do not know or care that sex is happening
I swear this is a consequence of the "life begins at conception" propaganda. Combined with the recurrent moral panic about "protecting children" (from knowledge).
Absolutely rancid combination of Christian morality with Christian morality.
I'm sad to say that the rise of fascism has been visible in my inbox for years as people become increasingly distrustful of their own bodies and pleasure. you see it in people's paranoia around becoming "porn addicts," their need for reassurance that a 24 year old isn't a predator for dating a 22 year old, their fears that they may have unwittingly committed assault by looking at another child's naked body when they were young, their insistence that consensual sex is impossible for anyone who has had a single drink or smoked a whiff of weed. people, especially young people, are doing a tremendous amount of work for fascism in terms of rigorously policing their own bodies and sexual expression, and they often don't even realize it.
It's definitely the purity and Sex Is Bad bullshit, not pro-life bullshit, speaking as someone who has spent time in the pro-life community (admittedly only US Christian-oriented ones).
As long as your OB/midwife hasn't said you should avoid sex, you can have it throughout pregnancy. In the latter half of pregnancy, the rocking movement the baby experiences can actually put them to sleep!
(For anyone unaware, not only is the cervix between the vagina and the uterus (meaning a penis/dildo cannot reach the uterus), but there's also a natural mucus plug in the cervix during pregnancy that keeps anything from the outside world (including in the vagina) from getting into the uterus, so no semen or lubricant can get in either.
On top of even that, the baby is inside of amniotic sac — a translucent membrane fully encasing it from embryo to right around the time of birth, filled with fluid to keep it cushioned and well-protected, as well as to help the lungs, gastrointestinal (stomach/intestines/rectum) tract, and urinary system develop)
While there are sound memories from within the womb — babies show recognition of voices they heard often in the womb (especially the person who carried them), songs that were sung, and music listened to — that's a recognition and comfort thing. Not a "oh yes this song Daddy sang every night!" or "Papa was talking about going for takeout every Friday" or whatever. Fetal brains aren't developed enough for that sort of thing, only recognizing familiarity from patterns. The sounds of their parent(s) having sex before being born aren't going to be remembered or even registered.
A fair amount of people who have given birth say that sex during pregnancy is the best sex they've ever had. If you're pregnant and are up for it, you should have sex!
(You should still practice safer sex if you're not in a closed relationship where you know nobody involved has STIs/STDs)
whoops
what a beautiful day to not be in high school
This is the like those “remember to be grateful you don’t have a sore throat right now” posts. It IS a beautiful day to not be in high school! Thank you!
Somebody tell me to go to the library.
Ook ook ook ook.
Well how am I supposed to argue with that?
It’s funny that the guy who really modeled how to be a non-black politician who is able to gain the support of community power brokers in a majority black city is Sri Thanadar but no one wants to claim him because he sucks in ways that are beautiful and unique to Sri Thanadar and that no one political faction can claim.
I just think it’s nice that when a lot of primaries are causing people to assert various things about various factions that at least one Michigan primary result came down to a simple “sucks to suck.” Congratulations Donovan McKinney!
