For real, though. I’m not trying to be glib. I know it’s a lot of work. A little bit each day — I promise you it’ll be worth it in the long run, even if it’s just for the psychological comfort, knowing you have that lifeboat. Even if it’s just basking in a sense of pride.

4,000 songs is a fairly modest digital library, but by any objective measure, that is a lot of music. Now imagine owning all of it.

to clarify, i lost a hard drive/computer in the last few years and had to replace my files because i didnt make my music files redundant, anyway, i currenlty have depression and anhedonia so bad i dont even listen to music so i have gone from a person with tens of thousands of tracks to someone who doesnt give a shit. however, for about 24 hours last year i decided to replace some of the stuff id lost and download a bunch of other stuff just in case i felt like listening to it and so i could fuck around in djay pro. in one day i got almost 12,000 tracks, everything from specific balkan turbofolk to just mass market billboard chart collections to usermade mixtapes etc, almost all of it from soulseek. i live in seattle and our internet infrastructure sucks compared to most of the rest of the US cities unless you live in one of the corporate condos with fiber service so its not like i had good download speeds or anything, and i dont bother with anything under 320kbps because i wasnt raised in a barn. im not a member of any private trackers or cool listservs or anything this was really just bottom of the barrel p2p searches en masse. i didnt receive a single ISP letter. i use mullvad vpn.

i dont know why everyone suddenly thinks piracy is difficult or dangerous. nothing has changed since the 90s except i guess a generation has grown up with anti-piracy propaganda. theres a whole genre of antipiracy creepypasta, which i dont believe people are dumb enough to think is “real” obviously but it certainly expresses the dread and horror of “being caught” that is apparently a consistent aspect of zoomer mindset. in the USA it’s just borderline impossible to get into actual trouble for media piracy. the exceptions are downloading popular torrents from public trackers, like getting a fitgirl repack without a decent vpn from piratebay or something, but honestly even then, 99 times out of 100, your ISP scolds you and then nothing happens. you can also get infected with botnet agents, crypto miners, and the occasional “virus” but it’s actually pretty difficult to do with even basic precautions. windows firewall eats that shit up

soulseek is great. moving over to a local collection from spotify is really easy. some nice people have written tools to enable exactly that using BitTorrent. if you set up prowlarr to manage torrent indices and hook it up to your torrent client, you can then use lidarr to import your entire spotify collection. it’ll automatically search torrent sites for any album you give it, no matter how many you have. after a day or two downloading, you’re all set. save your collection to an external drive, or run an MPD server to stream your music from your home computer to your phone. prowlarr is technically optional but it makes it way easier to find torrent sites to crawl.

please steal music. it’s trivial these days.

as someone who’s trying to break in to the music industry, please don’t do this to indie artists - it’s not trivial to us

actually buy the songs if you don’t want to stream them. I can understand not wanting to support Spotify (although a reminder that the alternatives are billionaire-owned Apple and Amazon so like maybe we’re focused on the wrong company here?) but a lot of musicians, more than you may think, need those numbers to survive.

not just directly (artists only see about 0.003 cents per stream) but also because no one will give you any opportunities if you don’t have big numbers on Spotify

by all means, pirate the Taylor Swifts of the industry. but please don’t fuck over indie artists. we’re having a tough enough time as it is

you are 21 years old so it is understandable that you are under the misconception that piracy is a replacement for purchase. it isnt. every study that has been done on this with a study design that wasnt specifically manipulated to appease Sony Music, shows that people who pirate media are not doing so as a replacement for buying the material, we do it as an adjunct and a precursor to buying material. if someone pirated your music due to lack of funds, they werent going to buy it anyway. likewise, piracy most strongly benefits smaller creators in all mediums, because it is a primary avenue for word-of-mouth recommendation. i will not be paying anyone a single american fiat cent for any of your music or anyone else’s until i am able to own the album and listen to it whenever i want for several months. you are out of your god damned mind if you think i would lower myself to paying for music i havent even heard 20x yet, without ads, at my leisure, and in the environment i choose. music that passes this test gets purchased at the rate i can afford it. most music pirates operate this way

this is less true of mainstream films specifically because going to mainstream movie theaters is mostly unpleasant and insanely expensive, so people will not generally pay an additional $30 total travel and parking and whatever else to see a NEW movie in theaters unless it’s REALLY good. most normie shit is not worth it, the industry knows this, and this is why they have been trying to kill piracy for decades. on the other hand i have and will continue to go see classic or underground films in theaters that i have already seen at home, because those movies are good and worth spending more to see in large format. perhaps people do not enjoy being strongarmed into paying that $30 to see a shitty film and thats why sales for movie tickets specifically are so badly impacted by piracy
