— Love Rivalry: 27. stood me up
"Thank you for today, Kaveh," You sheepishly say as you fix your hair using your phone camera. Kaveh smiles, "Anytime."
"Where the fuck were you?"
You freeze in place, not moving an inch as you recognize that voice anywhere. You shift your gaze from your phone screen to Kaveh, who turns to look at the voice owner, not wanting to look at him.
"Alhaitham, what are you doing here?" A smile not leaving Kaveh's face as he shamelessly asks Alhaitham, despite knowing the reason. Your eyes widen in surprise, shocked that Kaveh is familiar with the guy who once destroyed your world. Alhaitham stands before you two, a menacing aura radiating from his presence, yet you still refuse to meet his gaze. Similarly to you, he is wearing formal attire: an all-black tuxedo with a loose collar, almost as if he's about to attend a funeral.
"Shouldn't I be asking that, Kaveh?" Alhaitham scowls, not trying to hide his anger.
"You guys know each other?" You whisper at Kaveh, to which he nods, his gaze not leaving the man before him, "We're roommates," he whispers.
Unnoticed by the blonde, your facial expression faltered upon hearing his reply. 'Since when did *he* have a roommate?' Numerous questions formed in your head, questions that you shouldn't express. You swallow deeply, trying to regain your composure despite your raging thoughts. You knew you shouldn't have such thoughts wander freely in your mind, not after what happened.
After rationalizing the situation, you calm down, turning to look at him with a sharp gaze.
"You're late, [Name]," Alhaitham glowered. Your gazes clashed with one another; a tension formed like no other. “You stood me up.”
"To be fair, I thought you would be late," You expressed, eyes narrowing as you looked directly at your partner, "After all, I didn't want to be the one waiting for 45 minutes again."
"This is one time, too. How about letting this pass like I did that day?"
"The circumstances were different."
"Oh, stop it. Our meetings then weren't any different from today."
Alhaitham sighs, and in turn, you roll your eyes. It has been like this since that day two years ago: no regard for the other's time, exchanging passive-aggressive insults every meeting, gaslighting each other on who's in the right or wrong. Since that day, no gathering with Alhaitham, and you were civil.
Kaveh stares at you and his roommate in confusion. He was aware of your academic rivalry due to many Childe and maybe Alhaitham slip-ups, but he didn't think it was this bad. He watches his love and his roommate exchange passive-aggressive insults, his emotions going wild like they’re at battle with one another— restlessness, the emotion currently dominating the battlefield. Deep down in his mind, he knew there was something more than academic grades and who'd get the top score. An old grudge, maybe? Or some petty argument that started a long time ago? Or exes? He can't help but think this way; he is known to be emotionally fragile. However, if this is true, God set him up to fail.
Unconsciously and impulsively, he reaches for your hand, holding it tight like he is afraid to lose you. After all, how could he allow himself to lose you when everything was just getting started? However, does he have the right to feel this way?
You turn to look at him, confused at the sudden gesture, halting the useless banter between you and Alhaitham.
Your eyes soften as you look at him in concern, contrasting with your sharp and raging eyes when you look at his roommate. Kaveh's breath hitches as he realizes his hold on your arm and your confused gaze. Embarrassed, he immediately removed his grasp on you as his ears reddened.
"D-don't you two have a defense? Should it not be the time for you two to be at the hall now?" Kaveh stammers, his gaze avoiding yours. Worried, you open your mouth to ask about his well-being, however a voice intervenes.
"Kaveh is right. Let's go, [Name]." Alhaitham says, his tone also seems to calm down.
You look at Kaveh, his eyes finally meeting yours. "Good luck," He smiles, his ears still shaded in light pink, "Text me when you're done."
You thank him before turning and walking to Alhaitham. Kaveh stares at your back as you and his roommate walk towards the building together.
However, as he stares at you at a distance, Alhaitham turns his head to glance at him-- a glare, even. Kaveh's eyes widen as he and Alhaitham's locks gaze till he looks away.
