This comment, though, summed up my feelings on the matter quite well. “Quick, they’re having too much fun with it. Let’s change it!” They already opened the back door to varied tieflings in the Swordcoast source book but oh well… this is great.

I won’t engage in dev apologism but what it all sounds like to me is that they went forward with the objective to simplify aspects of the game to shorten their materials and make it more ‘friendly’ for new players only to find that while new players like SOME amount of simple, they also don’t think customization is needless complexity and will either merely ignore extra rules/worldbuilding or embrace the material. And more experienced players will miss the content– despite that it may have been added at one point not to ‘please’ anyone in specific but to instead stretch out a module or something.
