I just wanted to add this quote from the peppermint patty peanuts wiki page about Charles M. Schulz and his relationship with his gay cousin. itās normal to have mixed feelings about being disabled. sometimes you might feel proud of your disabled body/mind and not want to change it, other times you might wish to be different, even neglect or harm your body/mind out of hatred, as if you could punish the disability out of yourself. sometimes you might wish to be less debilitated so you could do more, other times you might wish to be more debilitated so you might have a reason for suffering so much. you may feel happy if your symptoms reduce, or you may feel invalid as a disabled person if you get any improvement. sometimes you might be determined to use your aids and medications, other times you might feel a kind of pride in ignoring your needs and acting as abled as possible. these are things a lot of people have felt, sometimes simultaneously, and theyāre a natural reaction to living in a body/mind that struggles.
emotional responses are deeply evolutionarily advantageous in any animals that are making complex decisions and behaviors (in many vertebrates, say) because they act as a reinforcer for a behavior. a bird taking a vigorous bath in a puddle is probably happy because if that behavior didnt elicit a positive feeling they wouldn't do it (it is dangerous to be on the ground and wet!). if an animal can feel fear, which i think is a less contested assertion to make, then it can certainly feel the opposite, that is, happy.
