One thing I appreciate about the show, thinking about it, is the use the framing devices of the narrative.
In seasons 1-2 Louis was basically giving the interview as a form of almost DIY therapy. He was doing it for himself, because on some level he was unsatisfied with the status quo of his existence and needed something to change. He very much did NOT really want the story to have an audience afterwards even if he initially claimed otherwise. So we watch the story unfold and we are made slowly aware of the ways in which there are inaccuracies; and that these were due to the natural fallacy of memory, to Louis wanting to remember things a certain way or Armand wanting him to remember things a certain way or to the yet to be determined accuracy of the diaries (which, to be fair, were read by other people on at least two occasions that Claudia was aware of, which may have had an impact of what/when she wrote there...) which were censored to some degree in any case.
The show reminds viewers throughout both seasons of the untrustworthy narrator aspect of things, which certainly had layers which we slowly discover along with Louis in Dubai. But it was never really a matter of artistic choice, as that was not the point of the story being told. It was a gothic suspense narrative of self-doscovery, revisiting the past through a different perspective to slowly uncover and learn to accept the truth.
Whereas in S3 Lestat is at the center, and he is innately an artist and performer. He is doing this as a reaction to the book and he is very much NOT doing it with the intent of DIY therapy or exploring his past for personal growth and emotional closure, but as performance. There is the documentary layer, which shows how he wished to present himself in that format, at one period in time. There are the Failure recordings, which is a different way he wished to present his story, at a later period in time. One explicitly to Daniel and one no one there but Lestat himself. They overlap but both very explicitly were created as a performance for an intended audience of many or one. And just as S1 and S2 kept circling back to the theme of 'odyssey of memory' the repeated emphasis on Baudelaire in S3 seems significant in presenting that as the underlying thesis for this season: Symbolism as an artistic movement.
Things don't have to be perfectly factually accurate to be TRUE. Exaggerations or omissions used as a deliberate choice in service of better representing the emotional truth of a moment seems very Lestat. Who in universe seems quite enamoured of the artistic merits of Baudelaire and presumably Symbolism as an artistic concept. Keeping that in mind changes the viewing experience and can make it easier to forgive things like the bad wigs. Is that the costume dept being lazy/cheap or is it deliberate decision to emphasize how Lestat felt and viewed the whole family, the cabbages and even his mother, the vibe of how it felt to be there? You will never be able to see it the way that he saw it, so this is the choice he makes in performance of it to evoke the feeling and senses as he experienced them being there, in a way the strict truth couldn't. Could go either way!
Unreliable narrator but not lying except in the sense of 'based on real events' movies are lying. The way that the author of 'The Things They Carried' as an exploration of what it felt like to be a soldier in the Vietnam war was lying.
The book as far as I recall did not have anything like this Symbolism as thesis interpretation which I think can help parse and accept the differences made either due to the writer's artistic vision or to budget and logistics constraints of making a TV show adaptation. TV show vs book: Lestat's story through a Symbolism vs Realism interpretation. This is the nitty gritty of exactly what happened vs this is what you need to understand what I want you to understand about what it felt like, to get the enough of the truth of what happened, and nothing more.

I honestly think Gen-Z and younger simply does not understand how recent widespread smartphone adoption is.
I am not that old, and I didn't have a smartphone until probably late high school. For most of my life, many if not most people were not walking around with a magic internet machine in their pocket that they pulled out and used constantly for everything.

this was on one of the Anne Rice writing method reblogs and its so good but i know people will take it the wrong way and i want to post it here to preserve and honor it. because theyre right, her writing IS mid. i really really enjoy her work but she is not particularly good at it. and i think that is the most important aspect of conceptualizing of yourself as a creative producer that is performing non-alienated work: how "good" it turns out to be has nothing to do with 1. how much of it you will sell 2. how much people will enjoy it 3. how MANY people will enjoy it and finally 4. the effort you put into making it. developing skill and taste are DIFFERENT tasks from the actual production. let this inspire you
Do you think tumblr will ever learn the difference between “I’m defending this person because I agree with them wholeheartedly and I am also like this person” and “I’m defending this person because your behavior is dangerous and you need to stop”
IMO, blurring the lines between “I’m defending them because they’re right” and “I’m defending them because you’re taking this too far” is step numero uno to cutting down the very existence of fair trial and democracy–even in places where saying that might seem a little dramatic.
Mob mentality is extremely strong in humans and it’s also extremely dangerous. Mobs don’t think things through. Mobs kill and they destroy and they can’t be reasoned with. Someone trying to calm a mob down isn’t someone defending the ~problematic party~ It’s time we re-learn that.
Just say you don't want actual representation and be done with it instead of jumping through all these hoops omfg
If you don't want Louis' dismembered head on the body horror show then you get to pick one:
- no agency or reparations or apology or healing for the Brown character who Louis used as a tool for 77 years to punish himself and Lestat
- keeping Louis white

"I can't believe humans would hunt the thylacine to extinction, humans are fundamentally evil" Hey, did you know that extinction was long thought to be impossible, and within 50 years of humans realizing that extinction via overhunting was a possibility it practically stopped happening? Did you know that humans are so desperate to prevent more losses that they're funneling millions of collective hours and billions of euros into helping other species? Hours and euros that could be spent on humans, and species on whom humanity's own survival does not depend? Did you know that due to an accidental introduction of rats, the Lord Howe Island stick insect population was brought down to 24 individuals and now there are tens of thousands of them?
This bug. This bug that, to most humans, is utterly useless, relatively gross, and completely foreign. Humans saved it because humans do not want to cause another extinction ever again if they can avoid it.
Hello, tumblr! I saw something on here the other day that worried me, so I decided to Do Science about it. But I can't do it alone: I need your help to build the dataset!
Here's what I need you to do:
If you see a post with a "mature content" label, and it's 2026, DM me a link to the post.
Yes, that's really it.
I am hoping to collect several thousand such posts, so that I have a decent sized dataset. I do not care what the post is about; if it's labeled as "mature content", I want to add it to my dataset.
If I get 10,000 posts in my dataset before August 31st 2026, I will post my preliminary findings then. I won't feel comfortable calling my findings "settled" before 2027, unless I get over 50,000 posts.
Tumblr Science FAQ, round 1
What's your hypothesis, OP?
I am not talking about that unless I have results to share. That would bias the results.
I did write them down and I did share them with a trusted contact who can prove that I wrote them down the same day I made this post. (While I did so before I made this post, I am not sure they will be able to provide proof of that, because I did so on the same day.)
OP are you interested in...?
Do you have to click through to see the post? Does the clickthrough contain the words "mature content"? Then yes.
OP are you interested if the post is about...?
I am interested in the mature content labels, not the content of the post. Is there a clickthrough that contains the words "mature content"? Then yes.
Tumblr Science FAQ, round 2
Should I reblog this for reach?
Yes, please. I felt really silly when I noticed I forgot to include that in the original post.
Is it okay if I send you my own posts?
Yes, those are perfect for what I'm looking for. I actually need to do some processing on a post to make it useful for testing my hypothesis, and this makes it easy.
Are you looking for "potentially mature content" also, or just "mature content"?
I want both, please. Anything that throws up a blocking screen that you have to click through. The distinctions between them are one of the things I am hoping to study.
Does it matter when the post was made originally?
Technically no. There's no way to respond to this without introducing some bias in the results, and I don't want that. However, I do collect some data on a post as part of making it useful to me, and that data is easier to collect if the post is recent.
What if I request content label review on a post after I send it to you?
I need to see the mature content label to be able to use the post. Because the mature content label hides the content of the post, it is very hard to use a post that no longer has a mature content label. You could send me a screenshot, but people could use that to lie to me.
Basically, it's more work for you to make it usable to me.
OP are you a transphobe? It would ruin the experiment for me if you're a transphobe.
I promise I'm not a transphobe and not doing this for transphobic reasons. You should still double-check that I'm not a transphobe for yourself, though. I am not sure that this study will have the useful effects you're hoping for; I am studying something specific, and it may not be what you hope.
Holy fuck
This works best if you keep windows closed.
Another design is using 2 20x25x1 filters, taping them to the sides of the box fan and then to each other so they sort of make a triangle, then cutting cardboard to make a top and bottom to the triangle.
This was discovered as a more effective design during the 2020 US west coast fires.

A better more efficient and odor eliminating homemade air purifier than just taping a 20x20x1 filter to a box fan. Sometimes you need to
If you live on the west coast of the United States, fire season is coming and this is vital.
We’ve been using one, and they’re great. Might try to make the double filter version this year.
theyve been doing a bunch of studies on this during the pandemic and this design is best! 4 filters and a shroud to optimize flow rate.
Corsi-Rosenthal Cube

I’ve personally used both the flat single-filter version AND the triangular two-filter version, and based on subjective personal experience I would argue that the benefits from the second filter, both in terms of airflow and filtration, are absolutely worth it. If you need a makeshift air filter and you have two filters to work with, build the triangle (if not the box, i have no idea how good that one works but based on the info here i presume it’s a fair bit better.)
