honoring all our trans siblings who are no longer with us on this trans day of remembrance. we love you, we miss you, we hold you in our hearts always.
i guess it was naĆÆve of me to hope widespread awareness of post-covid conditions would prompt broader conversations about post-acute complications of literally every infection ever. no ur right it's much better to continue positioning covid as uniquely bad & completely politically unpredictable & a total divergence from how every infectious agent is handled in capitalist healthcare systems. this definitely won't bite anyone in the ass
like sorry but i don't think many people are thinking clearly about the situation we are in globally right now. whatever the next epidemic or pandemic outbreak in humans is, we are still walking into it with international public health infrastructure operating under the wilfully maintained delusion that pathogens cause only acute symptoms until absolutely proven otherwise -- and while it is in capitalists' interest to minimise covid, it is also in their interest to present covid as an anomalous special case that is uniquely bad & disabling.
it's not even ljke covid is the first time researchers have pointed out post-acute complications xjxnsjsnsndndjd far fucking from it. this was all predictable and it will be predictable the next time and it still won't matter, if the best 'activism' we have on this is twitter infographics made with zero familiarity in the broader research on infectious disease and the relationship between acute infections & chronic disability. the minute you accept the notion that the only way to get people to take covid seriously is by claiming it's radically different to other diseases you've already ceded everything of value in your position, made your own 'movement' look foolish to anyone who does a pubmed search and realises you have no idea what you're talking about, & fuelled the kinds of arguments that state & public health officials continue to use to underfund prevention and treatment even of illnesses that have tons of 'pandemic hype' around them at this very moment :)
Reminder that people with invisible disabilities aren't the only ones who get ignored and accused of lying by doctors. People with visible and severe, even deadly disabilities aren't automatically believed. Some severely and visibly disabled people die because doctors won't believe that they're really sick, accuse them of faking or exaggerating and deny them treatment. This kind of treatment isn't unique to any one kind of disability, it's something that most or perhaps even all of us have faced at one point or another.
Been really depressed lately and need to see a doctor for my leg pain and numbness I think might be MS and migraines which is stressing me tf out so I panic and try to avoid it but it just keeps getting worse so I can't avoid it...
Anyways I sent a thing to a new Dr today basically asking if they can be a decent human and try to help me before I waste more of my time and money and get more medical trauma. š¤ Hopefully they respond well and I actually get help for once.
Now I just have to try to not obsess while waiting for their email and make my mental health worse.

i've been seeing a lot of americans saying - understandably - that they intend to pack up and move abroad. france, the uk, ireland, etc following the election results
i'm surprised by how many people don't understand that moving to another country is practically impossible unless you have a heritage claim (generally parents or grandparents who were born there)
you want to move to the UK? okay, well first you need a UK employer to sponsor you, and it needs to be a job that pays ~Ā£40k/$50k a year at the very least. how you find that employer without first moving here to work in the UK is up to you, but you can't work or look for work while on a tourist visa which is how you will probably be entering the country without a working visa. you can come here to study, but when your study visa expires you'll have to leave. you could marry someone from here, but they'd need to be earning around ~Ā£30k/$40k and you need to have been living together for two years which you also can't do without a visa
the same, with some differences, is true for literally everywhere else on the planet. you can't just move to another country.
my point is this: not only are our societies built around a system where your rights can be taken away if enough people vote against your interests, you also aren't allowed to leave.
unless, of course, you're rich. you can effectively buy a visa for $500k. so rich people can come and go as they please. but you can't.
(unmasked voice) if trump wins iām going to start building community locally and going to protests and firebombing walmarts. ā¦why am i not wearing a mask? well the government said i dont have to and people might judge me :(
too afraid of judgement to wear a mask talking about all the huge society altering protests ur gonna engage in yeah sure man have fun with that. also what are your plans re: protests if slash when youre too sick to walk. how are you preventing yourself and ur comrades in this community ur building from ending up in that exact situation. if i have long covid and you have long covid whoās doing the mutual aid. Etc.
why dont you āorganizeā a mask onto ur face
is the community youre building accessible to disabled people? to immunocompromised people? to those vulnerable to covid/long covid (which is everyone whoās previously been infected, btw)? why or why not?
is a covid-unsafe community really what you want? why is it acceptable to implicitly exclude disabled/immunocompromised people from these spaces? does excluding them mean valuable insight & information & connections are lost? is it worth it?
who told u it was safe to unmask? did u stop bc everyone else did? have u read into the research on covid, its effects on the body both in the acute phase and after? is it worth risking ur own health? is it worth risking othersā health?
who is going to take care of u when u get sick?
what will happen when u r both sick?

Getting Covid can reactivate Epstein-Barr Virus (what causes Mono)
I have been wondering for a year now how I got mono while masking everywhere and sharing drinks with no one.
They think some long Covid symptoms are actually attributable to EBV getting reactivated.
The strange neurological symptoms of "long-COVID" may have an explanation: another virus. A study has examined whether COVID promotes the re
The article above also describes how Covid is reactivating other herpes viruses, which is true: people are also getting shingles after Covid because it's reactivating their latent chicken pox. If you're born after 1995 you may already be vaccinated for chicken pox, but you may also need the booster; two shots are the standard now but might not have been available for 90s babies. Check your immunization records and talk to your doctor.
If you have ever gotten chicken pox at any point in your life, there is always a chance you can get shingles later. It is painful and contagious, and I personally know of THREE people who got Covid and then only a month or so later had shingles. Luckily there is a shingles (herpes zoster) vaccine, which is separate from the varicella (chicken pox) vaccine.
This is one of many reasons why those of us who are "covid conscious" stress the importance of prevention: even if you get Covid and it's "mild", any infection can still trigger a cascade of more severe health problems down the line, especially if you've had Covid more than once. As OP said, EBV can cause mono, and mono can lead to ME/CFS, of which Long Covid shares many symptoms.
Do your part in prevention: wear a mask, stay home when sick, and keep up to date with all of your vaccines. Get your shit today!
There's a difference between "disabled" and "legally recognized as disabled," and I just want to give a shout-out to all the other disabled people who don't have formal diagnoses, who don't have access to benefits of any kind, who don't have the ability to use even the shittiest and least-helpful resources, because the process of getting legal recognition for disability sucks ass.
And another shout-out to all the disabled people who purposely avoid getting diagnosed, because official diagnoses can be used against you, and you're unable or unwilling to risk it.
We all know what erectile dysfunction is but literally no one is ever taught what vaginismus is and it can cause people to feel extremely lost, broken, and cause people to take their own lives. Raise. Awareness.
For the uninformed, vaginismus is when the vagina painfully tightens and spasms when faced with pressure, usually from anything trying to insert into the vagina. Itās the reason I canāt wear tampons, and why many people canāt have vaginal sex without severe pain.
Thereās not a lot of treatments, and there isnāt a single one that is for vaginismus exclusively - theyāre all medications or treatments to treat symptoms, but not the causes. In fact, for a long time doctors waved off vaginismus as a purely psychological disorder in cis women.
Seriously, this is so unaddressed and uncared for in medical circles. Please spread awareness, even if all itās for is to let those who have it but donāt have a name for it finally be able to understand whatās happening to their bodies.
Certified Sex Ed Post!
Hi hello! This post is almost 10 years old and there ARE treatments for this. Vaginismus is otherwise known as pelvic hypertonia and it is a MUSCULAR condition that can be caused by many different factors including endometriosis, trauma, chronic UTIs, and connective tissue disorders.
Itās incredibly common! And it can be treated by physiotherapy.
I know this because Iām currently undergoing physio and although it can take months to recover, Iām already seeing improvement. A lot of the pelvic floor exercises are available online, but if you have these symptoms please TALK TO YOUR DOCTOR and see if you can get a physio referral (or investigation for underlying causes like endometriosis).
Also, my additions to posts never get reblogged so a note to my followers: this is SUPER IMPORTANT ISSUE that affects many people and is rarely talked about. Please reblog, and please share this info with as many people as possible.
Pelvic hypertonia/vaginismus is incredibly debilitating and psychologically damaging but it CAN BE TREATED. Spread the word, and you never know who youāll be throwing a lifeline to.
I need to be as clear as possible that Iām not being smug or saying I told you so when I say this, but what every solidly pro-Palestinian analyzing the Harris campaign said would happen in Michigan happened. Iāve been saying it for months. She completely alienated her voter base of Arabs and Muslims in Michigan, dismissed them at every turn, communicated that they didnāt matter to her, and she still expected them to line up enthusiastically to vote for her. This was entirely avoidable if sheād made even token efforts to gain their support instead of openly disregarding them
especially the fact that Rashida Tlaib won her reelection by a landslide

This is an excellent point too. We can see incredibly clearly that Harris didnāt lose Michigan because more voters supported republicans. She lost Michigan because voters there didnāt want *her* specifically due to her positions
Kamala Harris is currently losing Michigan by 81,597 votes.
The number of people who voted "Uncommitted" over Joe Biden in the Michigan Democratic Presidential Primary in February 2024 was 101,054.
