i feel these needed to be compiled. feel free to add more genre related posts in the notes if you want
Song #5: "impish thing" by "smiling broadly"
This song has been on my mind for a while now. In all honesty, I donāt know much about the girl behind this project. I stumbled across this artist after listening to a whole bunch of ippo.tsk, and I havenāt even checked out anything beyond this one EP. If anyone knows more about the history of this project or the person behind it, please let me know in the notes. Anyways, letās get right into it.
Musical Analysis: Ohhhhh my gosh. Itās so bouncy. The pacing is so well done, I love the constant motion of the guitar. Speaking of the guitar, the tone is really unique. Crunchy. Lo-fi, but crisp. The chiptune solo just feels so, so good. Brings me back. This song does a really good job of capturing the joy of cathartic emo music.
Lyrical Analysis: The lyrics fit the song very well and add another layer to the emotion. Itās a cheerful song if you donāt listen to the lyrics. If you do listen, itās an incredibly emotional song about an intense and sometimes painful relationship. Hereās an excerpt I wrote once and sent to a friend about what I think this song explores.
āI think itās about two girls in an intense BDSM relationship, one in which they cause so much pain to each other and gain catharsis from it. Itās about this girl whose life is going down a destructive spiral. But at the same time, theyāre so happy to be with someone. Life is flashing before her eyes, sheās going to go out with a bang, doing intense emotional destructive acts with the one she loves. Sheās so in love with the idea of stepping off into oblivion with another woman. She knows this isnāt sustainable but sheās going to enjoy it while she can.ā
As a final note, music is an art form. And like any other form of art, it is subjective. If anyone disagrees with me in the notes Iād be happy to hear! I wonāt try to debate anyone, Iād just love discussion!
Song #4: "Visions" by "Sea in the Sky"
Ahhh, yes. Sea in the Sky. The band that got me into post-hardcore. This band has a pretty interesting story, they started as an instrumental band in 2013, writing very djenty yet chill prog instrumental pieces. Their 2014 album, "Serenity", had lyrics written by the bassist, but because they didn't have a vocalist yet, they simply published the album as an instrumental. Later, a vocalist named Sam Kohl (who also has an soft indie solo project that's p good) joined the band and they re-recorded the Serenity album with the lyrics written by the bassist! To my knowledge, Johan writes all the lyrics and Sam just sings them.
Musical Analysis: A perfect meld of djent and swancore. Really impressive. My one criticism is that there's so much stuff happening at once that it's hard to keep track of it all. The guitar shredding during the chorus is disorienting, but each piece of the song by itself is truly beautiful. And it mostly comes together well. It's a bit messy at times but is genuinely a wonderful and ethereal piece of djent/swancore.
Lyrical Analysis: However you slice it, this is clearly a song about atheism and feeling a disconnect from G-d. Every single line in this song hits me so fucking hard, so there's not really any specific lines I can point to. Anyways, the voice here seems to genuinely believe in G-d, but resents him and feels that G-d has not treated the people of earth kindly and therefore shouldn't have our attention. The voice makes a point that everything humans have was done without the hand of G-d, and that we don't need him.
There was a time in my life when this song was sort of an anthem for me. I'm not atheist anymore but the djent still fucking hits me.
As a final note, music is an art form. And like any other form of art, it is subjective. If anyone disagrees with me in the notes Iād be happy to hear! I wonāt try to debate anyone, Iād just love discussion!
The ask thing 26 and 27
26 - A song that makes me want to fall in love: "Hands Down" by "Dashboard Confessional" and also "impish thing" by "smiling broadly". The first is pretty straightforward, the second is a more. Cathartic? song i guess? It just reminds me of what it's like to be in a destructive yet beautiful relationship. Idk
27 - A song that breaks your heart: Oh, my. There are so many that come to mind. One that sticks out to me right now is "weird!!not ok(small)" by "exciting!!excellent!!". The themes of alienation and the way NTs treat autistic ppl really gets to me. Well, that and the fact that chiptune sounds make me feel like I'm a kid again and so it hits harder when it's emo. Another is "Hero Worship" by "Autumn Rhythm". The somber sound, the lyrics, the ambiance, it's all so good. Def check it out.
A few others that also break my heart but you may not like:
"muffled beneath the sound of the ocean" by "Your Arms Are My Cocoon"
"CXD9566" by "Cicadahead"

Song #3: "rose-tinted bitter grudge" by "ippo.tsk"
"ippo.tsk" is an Indonesian vocaloid producer that my good friend @glhmediamaster told me about. Their whole album "seeyalater stratocaster" is really a work of art, it's a wonderful concept album that's mostly about the temporary nature of humankind, the corrupt megacorporations of the world, and the way everything will eventually fall down and return to dust. This specific song is a little different though.
Musical Analysis: Very shoegazey, but in an upbeat Asian post-hardcore kind of way. The harmonies during the chorus are very strange, I love it. It's so odd and I haven't heard much like it. I wish the screams were a little better, but hey, it's vocaloid. I've been looking for a human cover of this with better screams but to no avail. All this being said I genuinely adore this song, it's on my playlist of favs for a reason. My favorite thing about this song sonically is the way it's kinda like... upbeat shoegaze, like "my dead girlfriend" or "MASS OF THE FERMENTING DREGS".
Lyrical Analysis: To me, this seems to be a song about someoneās bitterness towards an old friend-turned-foe. The chorus is my favorite part. āI wanted to say that I wanted you to stay as far away from me as you know how / But now youāre no more and I still yearn to bear my fangs at you again as I knew howā. This is a familiar feeling to me: I enjoyed fighting with you, I loved getting to explode at you, we split ways but I miss getting an excuse to be mean to someone. Itās a very bitter song, Iām really surprised there isnāt more screaming in it.
I swear thereās a second recording of this somewhere with different tuning, but I am unable to locate it. Please send me a link if you know what Iām talking about.
As a final note, music is an art form. And like any other form of art, it is subjective. If anyone disagrees with me in the notes Iād be happy to hear! I wonāt try to debate anyone, Iād just love discussion!
Song #2: "Beholder" by "Sincerely" and "Sea Salt"
Sincerely is an instrumental bedroom math rock artist that I discovered a few years ago, when I was first getting into what the kids call "swancore". This is the first song of theirs I listened to, and I haven't really checked out the rest of their stuff bc I don't like instrumentals.
The album cover is really beautiful, it's a very immaculate sketch of a D&D beholder, and a detail I like is the heart-shaped iris in the center eye, which I'll talk more about later. The version of this single featuring sea salt has four colored beams. Another detail I only just noticed after looking at a higher definition image is the tiny human facing down this behemoth.
Musical Analysis: I want to preface with something. I know very little music theory, despite loving prog and math rock, I'm really too stupid to comment on the really cool stuff they do with polyrhythms and shit. That being said, I love the almost shoegazey feel. The guitar tone is very clean and metallic, it's everything i like about bedroom guitarist stuff.
Lyrical Analysis: At its core, Beholder is a song about depression and trying to wait for feeling to pass, not doing anything about it, and hoping things get better without actively doing anything to fix it. My favorite line is "I never thought that life would feel this dull, maybe in the end I will feel better if I wait." Below are a few lines I'm not certain about what they could mean, so if anyone has ideas feel free to tag me in the notes!
"You never wanted to let go of the things that helped us grow, hoping for the right way, hoping that I'll find something right for me"
"And for now I'll leave it for another day, call my friends and see what they all have to say, but for now I'll have to find another way out, asking if i really want to stay"
As a final note, music is an art form. And like any other form of art, it is subjective. If anyone disagrees with me in the notes Iād be happy to hear! I wonāt try to debate anyone, Iād just love discussion!
Song #1: "23" by "Swim, Gustavo!"
āSwim, Gustavo!ā is kind of an enigma to me. Their socials say they were a band from 2016-2023, but I canāt find anything about why they broke up, or if they released anything besides their 2019 album, āEl Mar, Mi Amorā.
Regardless, this group is a very underrated underground prog-post-hardcore / emo band. Their sound is somewhere between āTiny Moving Partsā and āChonā, with additional scream vocals and underwater vibes.
Musical Analysis: The mixing on this album is ass. The screams and drums are incredibly faded. Itās a little disorienting, listening to this after some hardcore. I think they were going for an underwater feel, which they did very well. When Iām having psychosis moments and I listen to this I get lycanthropy feelings. Fish therian moment. In fact, thatās what drew me to this album: the underwater vibes are wonderful. Another thing I really like is the way the screams overlap with the clean singing, telling another part of the story.
Lyrical Analysis: To me, this is a song about obsession, psychosis, and masking. Iām definitely projecting a lot, but hear me out here. Letās go through this one concept at a time.
Psychosis: The line āYour numbers and placement, theyāre wasted on humanity, I am not obsessed, everything isā hits me in a strange way. During episodes I see numbers in everything. I have delusions that there are other forces in play and I see the supernatural. To me, āIām not obsessed, everything isā refers to the feeling of āItās not me, there really is a secret here. Iām not insane, the world is just a cosmic plan thatās all coming together.ā And the āwasted on humanityā part is like, āNobody else can see this huge secretā.Ā
Obsession: A lot of this song reminds me of my manic episodes. This is definitely just me projecting, but like I said above, thereās a very strong connection i have to this song, itās one of my favorites. āI remember everything, exactly what itās supposed to mean to me Iām never really sureā
Escapism: āPlease hold me under and donāt let me breathe, promise me that youāll be the last thing I seeā paints a picture of someone trying to escape their own thoughts by filling their mind with thoughts about another person. (see also āletās all have one final laughā)
Masking: This is probably the most obvious one, and probably also the intended meaning of the song. Pretty much every line connects back to this in some way.
As a final note, music is an art form. And like any other form of art, it is subjective. If anyone disagrees with me in the notes Iād be happy to hear! I wonāt try to debate anyone, Iād just love discussion!
