Okay, this is pretty incredible. A 3D artist, consulting scholars and archaeologists, worked for a year and a half in Blender to create a reconstruction of pre-Columbian Tenochtitlán, complete with the surrounding landscape. It’s staggeringly beautiful, and—at least to me—gives a wonderful impression of the city as a place where people worked and lived and worshiped

A nearly complete 1st century BCE carnyx found in 2004 at Tintignac, France (the one in the left picture, with a reconstruction in the right). Fashioned as a snarling boar, the carnyx was a war horn used by the Iron Age Celts between c. 200 BCE and c. 200 CE

fun fact, the first reconstruction of the carnyx was built in Scotland in the early 90s, and John Kenny brought it to my dad's photographic studio (our house) to have publicity pictures taken. I was very very young, but I had a precocious interest in history, and Kenny showed me the detailed boar's head, which had an articulated tongue that would give the effect of a subtle ululation when it was played. He played it for us in our garden, and I can still remember the sound. It sounded like a trumpet, if a trumpet was a wild prehistoric animal capable of throwing back its head and howling. It sounded like something great and tusked and angry and brass that knew what blood was and wanted it.

I don't know how old I was when I heard it, I think it must have been after its debut at the museum, but I do remember Kenny telling us we were among a very small handful of people who had heard the carnyx in 2,000 years. I remember my nextdoor neighbour's pigeons all taking off from his loft, and the wide silence that rang out afterwards, that more often came in the wake of foghorns from the harbour. I wonder, in retrospect, what all those people packed around us in their tenements in the poor part of Leith thought they'd heard. what does an ancient celtic war horn sounds like, floating through the window while you're doing the dishes?

The Couture Courtesan: mixed race Asian reenactor and historical fashion enthusiast who talks about fashions of various time periods, as early as the Tudor era up to the 1910s.

Three weeks ago today I went on a trip to Poland for Holocaust studies. One of the first things we were told was this story.

After the Shoah, the Ponevezher Rav went to Rome to try to collect funds for his yeshiva. He left the airport, found his talmid who he was staying with, and as they got into the taxi, he said “We need to go to the Arch of Titus” (or, well, he said that in Yiddish). The talmid was incredulous: “Rebbe, it’s midnight, it’s pouring with rain, come to your rooms! Why do you need to see this Arch, anyway?” But the rabbi was insistent, so the talmid gave in. They arrived, and the rebbe got out of the taxi, looked at the Arch – this frail old man next to a towering 15 metre (~50ft) stone arch, and one to the triumphs of the Emperor Titus, no less, the man who led the siege against Jerusalem which culminated in the churban, the destruction of the Second Temple which we still mourn on Tisha B'Av.

He got out of the taxi, and roared at the top of his lungs into the night. 

“TITUS, TITUS! AVU BIS DU, VAHL ICH BIN DO?”

Titus, Titus! Where are you? For I am here.

There’s a museum somewhere in Rome, or a gallery in the Vatican at the very least, where they have all of the busts of the Roman Emperors stored.  A rabbi of my acquaintance was visiting the Vatican on an interfaith conference once and took a moment to visit the gallery.  He found the bust of Hadrian, who looks just like he’s described in the Gemara, and spoke to you.

“You tried to kill us, and your empire is ashes, dust and historical curiosities.  And we?  We are still here.”

A beautiful rendition of a Maya myth.

The god Quetzalcoatl took human form to wander the world, and upon finding himself tired and hungry, met a rabbit who kindly offered to feed him with its own life and body, so Quetzalcoatl repaid this kindness by immortalizing its image on the moon.

Such a beautiful tale!!!

We visited the little wine windows of Italy, and now it’s time to pay a visit to the “Klek” (kneeling) boutiques of Bulgaria. 

These little below-eye-level shops are common in Sofia, Bulgaria. 

You’ve got to literally be on your knees to shop here. The concept arrived after the fall of the Berlin Wall when Bulgaria moved away from communism and legalized private ownership.

Bulgarians could now own their own businesses, but due to the high costs of rent many people were unable to afford their own place.

So, using their initiative and creativity they started setting up shops that operated out of the basement of old buildings and soon klek shops were spotted along the sidewalks of Sofia.

Most of the shops sell snacks, drinks, alcohol and cigarettes although you can also find shoe repair shops, or service businesses such as laundry shops.

All the goods on offer are kept safely behind glass-covered shelves that surround the window,

Customers choose their items, crouch down, and pay the owner. 

While their big boom was back in the 90s, many shops are still maintaining their businesses around busy roads and walkways. You’ll find most of them strategically placed beside bus stops.

Most shops are open late or 24 hours, making the klek synonymous with after-hours nightlife– a convenient local amenity for party-goers on their way home in need of a quick bite, hair of the dog or a nicotine reboot.
