Some days his absence is as cold as ice.
It festers in Hiccup’s chest, wraps around and catches his breath, making him feel like everything is falling apart.
He feels toothless’s absence and it hurts more than any dragon fire ever could.
On days like this, Astrid comes to him. She entangles her fingers around his, leans her cheek into his shoulder and remains close.
She stays and Hiccup listens to her breathing. Some days, when her hair is down because she’s yet to braid it, unbrushed, golden strands tangle against his.
Hiccup thinks of love, for Astrid, the love that toothless had for the light fury, and it still leaves him aching, but it’s a little better.
Maybe.
