The obsession with the Joker needing to being killed more than anyone else kind of tell me that because, personally, I would choose Lex Luthor (so rich he escapes punishment and he was the fucking president of the US once) or Amanda Waller (literally participates in the, still legal, slavery of prisoners, making them soldiers for the US and threatening their life to force them to risk their life. All the superheroes have a no-kill-rule to some degree or another yes, but it is definitive to Batman and his allies because that's like the whole thing.

Batman is such a simple way to explore the question: "Death Penalty: yay or nay?"

like it's INESCAPABLE of this piece of media because it IS political, which makes all the language surrounding Batman's no kill rule so concerning

Why just the Joker? He's not the only rogue who messed up other people/characters' lives

How does that account for him being mentally ill? Do you not realize the precedence that's setting?

What about Harley, his willing accomplice? Is she absolved? Oh she's a "victim"? Isn't the Joker technically a victim of mental illness and societal factors leading thereof? Oh she's "redeemed"? Why can't we extend the same grace to the Joker?

Where does it count?

Why? Didn't they choose to be rogues too?

What about those who had to be rogues or lackeys for some socioeconomic reason or another?

Decapitation: why stop at the head of the system? What assurance is there that the system won't be imitated with a different head and gears?

Sometimes it is very frustrating that people seem to think that a relationship being weird and intense must imply that it's romantic, as if platonic relationships are somehow exempted from the human ability to be weird and intense about anything.

Starting from the Golden Age, if you needed a drag persona and style for any particular reason Bruce would already have it. In the Silver Age he was so good at drag that he'd have to be reminded to break character once he was no longer in front of an audience. In the Modern Age his parents worried that he was "too sensitive", that there was something wrong with him, and he was sent to a strict boys boarding school for reasons he didn't understand where he was violently bullied and harrassed for being "quiet and not very athletic", and he had an encyclopedic knowledge of women's fashion before he even studied to be a detective. Like do you see.

Kyle was going to die. He did not, despite the obvious facts, consider himself to be possessed of great will. It did not occur to him that the fact that he could make himself stand there and pretend to be casual spoke volumes.

“I’ll have to think about it,” he said, hoping that his voice didn’t shake, turning down the thing he would have liked most in the world. “I’m a pretty private person.”

Superman considered this. “That’s fair,” he said, “but maybe I should mention that the League doesn’t require you to disclose your civilian identity.”

“It doesn’t?” Shit. He shouldn’t have sounded so excited.

“No. Some people choose to disclose to close friends, but it isn’t on file and no one has to share anything they’re not comfortable with.”

“Oh.” Maybe… maybe no one would have to know. Maybe he could do this. “I’ll still have to think about it,” he said, even as he made up his mind, “but I am very interested.” Superman smiled, suddenly, and even though he had been nothing but kind Kyle was terrified. “What? Did I say something funny?”

“No, no, you’re fine,” Superman assured him. “Usually Green Lanterns are a little more candid, is all. There’s nothing wrong with it.”

“I, uh.” Kyle faltered. “It’s not that I have anything to hide. It’s just… before I got the ring, I… did some things I’m not proud of.” Superman nodded in a manner warily sympathetic. “Things are different now, though. Very different.”

“I believe you,” Superman said, and it was absolutely killing him how nice he was. He was so nice. Kyle’s only saving grace was that he was wearing the classic costume. “The ring chose you, that’s all I need to know.”

Oh, god. Superman thought he had reformed from a life of crime.

He wasn’t entirely wrong. Right? Right. This was fine. Everything was fine. Kyle would join the League and never tell anyone his name and no one would ever know the depth of his sins and he would meet Batman and that would end well.

… he needed to go find Jimmy immediately.

I think my problem/dislike with a lot of early Dickbin retellings is that they are not nearly as obsessed with each other as they should be. The early Dynamic Duo should be two peas in a pod. They are on the same wavelength, they have synergized, they finish each other's thoughts and sentences, they do silly things together, they spend so much time with each other they might as well be glued together...

Not saying they would/should never fight in that era or not be a bit questionably codependent and undefineable, but I believe their relationship should only crumble/become as messy as it is today when Dick leaves the nest to become Nightwing. When the security they both had in their relationship is gone because Dick is an adult now and doesn't come home anymore like he did before when he was still Robin.

It's just not nearly as tragic/interesting to me when the Dynamic Duo didn't have mostly great times together in those first 8ish years. They need to fondly remember this time and miss it badly. Dick should lay awake in bed regretting pushing Bruce away to be more independent. Bruce should lay awake in bed regretting pushing Dick away after he got hurt. They should mourn their relationship like the other died instead of just living in a different city.

It also feels a bit lazy when Bruce is an extremely paranoid mean asshole from the start, much more interesting when he is changed over time from so much tragedy. Don't just skip past all that character/relationship development to get their modern dynamic! That modern dynamic had a slow build up!
