āmoney isnāt realā āthe law isnāt realā etc.
they are not the cause, they are the result
theyāre real out of necessity, out of pressure, from the relations they obfuscate, theyāre made ārealā necessarily
no no no no no, friend, you misunderstand me, Iām critiquing this viewpoint!
We canāt just āpretend money never existedā, we have to change the relations that necessitates it in the first place! Change them to the point of complete departure, a break.
If we go forth without changing the conditions, these will force themselves back into existence by necessity. The good news is that they are contingent on how we relate to each other so if we relate in a different manner, we necessitate differently; or, put simply, donāt need money and laws etc.
This is also the bad news because it requires a complete overturn of even very basic things not least of which includes economic arrangements. Itās just a lot.
in my lifetime, every attempt to address this need - even just speaking about it - has been met with deadly opposition
The part about ārelations they obfuscateā is important because saying āI owe my landlord 1000 dollars every monthā doesnāt explain the actual relationship but āif I donāt pay the police and the courts will make sure I am evictedā. So itās really a description of a power imbalance between tenant and landlord (but mostly between agents of the state and those they oppress)
#i really hate when people say something is a social construct #and then say that means its ānot realā #no it is real its just constructed #like the law is a social construct #technically if we all woke up tomorrow and had the memory of the legal system erased from our minds #along with any physical representations of it #then sure it would vanish #but thatās pretty unlikely so therefore the law will probably be still around #the point of identifying something as a social construct is to show that it is not immutable that it can be changed #e.g. race is a social construct #it is not inherent or grounded in fundamental biological differences other than aesthetic ones in some cases #but it is very much real #and significantly affect how people relate to each other and the power structures around them #whether they get the job the loan etc. #a house is constructed #but it is still real #its just that can also be renovated #or i suppose maybe one day abolished #in the analogy of money (via @tiarnanafainne)
Good commentary only
In the 1680s, a Huron-Wendat statesman named Kondiaronk⦠engaged in a series of debates⦠[in which] he argued that punitive law and the whole apparatus of state exist not because of some fundamental flaw in human nature but because of another set of institutionsāprivate property, moneyāthat by their very nature drive people to act in such ways as to make coercive measures necessary. Equality, he argued, is thus the condition for any meaningful freedom.
