By the time light shone into the cave, you were wide awake and getting ready. You wore an orange to green ombre feather top and green loincloth with roots that circled lowly around your hips. It didn't take long for your father, mother and Neteyam to rise from their slumber, moving quickly to freshen up and start the day. As you moved to the outside of the family's hut, your father followed you, quick to get ready for whatever duty he had. As you moved around, gathering your bow that was leaning against the hide of the tent and your arrows, you felt your father's gaze on you. Just from the intensity and weight of his eyes, you knew he wanted you to give him your undivided attention.
"Is there something you wish to speak of father?" You asked calmly before turning your head towards him. Your father stared at you in a long beat of silence before motioning for you, with his hand, to approach him. You frowned at the quiet command before standing from your spot and moved to stand beside your father, your eyes moving to stare at the entrance of the cave. For a long moment, your father didn't say anything before speaking up, "Your mother, Neteyam and I will be going on patrol... I want you to be with your siblings and try to keep them out of trouble." At your sides, your hand balled up tightly, one around air and the other around the body of your bow.
Turning your head slightly, you glanced up at your father, meeting his eyes that seemed to be filled with worry or some sort of fear. The sight of your father's expression made your tail snap behind you, signaling your mild irritation. "And if I can't keep them out of trouble?", you asked in a hypothetical tone. Your question made your father glare at you before looking away, "let's not think of that." That was all your father said before you heard Neteyam and your mother moved out of the hut, making your step away from your father, ear pulled back slightly, and head low. As your mother, Neytiri, walked past, you felt her hand rest onto your cheek, raising up your head slightly to meet your golden eyes.
"Sweet child, it is far too early to be down. What's the issue?", she asked. Her golden eyes were filled with a different kind of worry but quickly, you shook your head to dismiss both your mother's hand and worry. "Nothing... you should all be on your way..." That was all you said before walking back to the hut, bumping against Neteyam's shoulder before sitting down in a defensive position at the front of the hut. Your mother looked at you before turning her gaze to your father, giving him a questioning look, only for your father to shake his head in dismissal.
It didn't take long for them to leave. Though, as they rode their Ikrans out of the cave, you couldn't help but to pray to Eywa for their protection.
Once the light had shone brightly, Lo'ak, Kiri, Spider, and Tuk were already up and awake. You made sure they were fed and that they were dressed properly for the day. Once you were certain that they were ready for whatever adventure they'd have in mind, you moved to go tend to the Ikran. Though, before you got far, Tuk ran towards you with tears in her eyes, "Lo'ak doesn't want to take me with him! Both Kiri and Spider are going but, Lo'ak says I'm too much of a baby to go with them!" You stood there, listening to Tuk's cries, your hand moving to rest over her head before you glanced towards Lo'ak, who was sighing deeply.
"Go... tell him, I said you can go. He is your older brother so, he'll care for you. Kiri too." That was all you had to say before detaching yourself from Tuk, letting her run back to Lo'ak with a mocking laugh, and went back to do what you were meant to do. You had a feeling that you should go but, Lo'ak is old enough to handle any situation.
Or so, you hope.
After tending to the Ikrans, going to collect some materials for your grandmother, and playing with some of the clan's children, you were making your way to your grandmother's hut. You were tightly holding onto the basket full of herbs, roots, plants, and bark, until you heard Lo'ak's voice through the comms. You froze in front of your grandmother's hut, eyes widened by the seconds, leaving your grandmother confused. "Child, what's wrong?", Mo'at said as she stared at you, waiting for her materials.
"Devil Dog, this is Eagle Eye, over." Lo'ak started.
It didn't take long for your father to respond back through the comms. "Devil Dog. Send your traffic."
When it came to Lo'ak to say what he needed, there was a small pause before he spoke up. "I've got eyes on some guys--they look like avatars but, they're in full camo and carrying AR's. Six of them. Over."
"What's your pos', over?"
Again, there was a pause from Lo'ak's end before he said with hesitation, "we're, uh--at the old shack."
Father was quick to ask his next question, "who's we?"
"Uhm--me, Spider, Kiri and... Tuk."
Oh, you knew it. You should've gone with them and now, who knows what kind of trouble Lo'ak will get them. Quickly, you ran inside and placed the basket down, shocking your grandmother with your urgent movements. "Girl, what is--"
"It's Lo'ak and the rest."
That was all you said before running out of the hut and weaving through everyone around you, making your way to the ledge of the cave. You heard your grandmother yell for you to come back but, you ignored it and sharply you chirped for Kaym. With practice ease, you jumped off the edge before falling onto Kaym's back, quickly creating tsaheylu with him and riding out of the cave with a final chirp. You knew, you'd get an earful of your father but, that was the least of your worries.
Eventually, the sky darkened and rain started to pour from above, which was good, in some part. Almost silently, you landed far from the site when Lo'ak had said he was at, "tam tam, Kaym." You gently patted Kaym's head before moving down the tree branch you had landed on, eyes flickering around. As you moved around the forest, jumping over roots that prodded out of the ground and pushing larger leaves away from your view, you removed your bow from your body and ket your other hand near the arrows attached to your thigh. Once you neared the site where Lo'ak said, you finally heard the unfamiliar voices talking amongst each other, below a whisper.
Skillfully, you made your way up a tree that stood a bit away from the group but, close enough to attack. "Eagle Eye, Devil Dog, say your status, over?", you heard your father through the comms, only for it to be followed by silence. "Eagle Eye, how copy?", your father said in worry. Though, the silence didn't last long, "Jake Sully! You hear me, Corporal? I've got your kids! How you copy that?" The voice was mocking, almost as if it were hanging a toy over a kid's head as they cried for it.
"Who is this?" Your father said, slight confused but, wanting to confirm.
"It's your past catchin' up with you, son."
You weren't sure how long you waited in your spot, eyes flickering around you and back to your siblings. You weren't foolish enough to barge into a fight, especially alone but, your body begged to move. Though, it didn't take long to hear the familiar call that you grew up with.
Immediately, your ears shot up and twitched towards the sound, listening for it, and thankfully, the call was made again. Your mother was nearby. Out of instinct, identifying yourself for your siblings and parents, you chirped back to your mother before. From the corner of your eyes, body still pressed against the tree you were in, you could see how Lo'ak, Kiri, Tuk, and Spider looked around to find where you and your mother were at. Of course, you didn't take the first hit, it was your mother. First on to go down was the man holding Kiri, alerting everyone around them and shooting towards the area that the first arrow came from.
Taking your chance, see how chaos broke loose and their attention was at the opposite end, you placed an arrow at the nock point of the sting before pulling it back, elbow tilted upwards as you took an aim. You watched all Spider, Lo'ak, Tuk and Kiri bolt away but, Kiri got unlucky for a moment. One of the avatars grabbed Kiri but before the woman could have a good hold, you released your arrow.
SSHH-WHACK!!
The arrow lodged itself through the woman's throat before you lowered your bow and chirped in success. Quickly, you followed the rest of them, moving from tree to tree as you kept and oversight of Lo'ak and Tuk, making you wonder where Kiri and Spider ran off to. Eventually, both kids stopped once they were far away from the scene, making your sigh in quiet relief. After a moment, almost in sync, you, Neteyam and your father came through the foliage, scaring both Lo'ak and Tuk. Your father and Neteyam were shocked to see you, especially since you didn't speak through the comms and they might've missed hearing your prior chirps but, you ignored them.
Quickly, you moved to stand in front of Lo'ak and Tuk, dropping your bow onto the wet forest floor, and placed a hand on Lo'ak and Tuk. "You two... Thank Eywa that you're okay...", you whispered. Your normally glaring golden eyes were softened with relief and slight worry before you moved away and looked at your father and Neteyam. Finally, acknowledging their presence, you simply nodded at them before picking up your bow. Your father sighed at your behavior before looking at Lo'ak and Tuk, "anybody hurt? Tuk, you okay?" At your father's question, Tuk sniffs and nods, only to be motioned by father to continue running. It didn't take long for them to catch up with you guys, making you, instinctively, grab Tuk into your arms and bolted up into a tree, knowing well enough that your father, Neteyam, and Lo'ak could handle themselves but, you still ran over them from above.
By the time the chase was over, and your mother and Kiri were reunited to the group, you jumped down from the tree above and released the crying Tuk from your arms. Though, when you looked up and around the group, there was someone missing and as mother hugged Kiri and Tuk, Lo'ak asked an important question.
"Where's Spider?"
Not a second later, Kiri broke down into a sob, making you glance at her before looking away. Your father moved to hug Neteyam and Lo'ak, reassuring them before he moved to you, hand placing itself against the back of your head and pulling it close to his chest. Your father knew you, the way you stood and the way you avoided eye contact, he knew you felt guilty. "It's okay, baby girl... you've done nothing wrong, sweet girl." At the wors of your father, your lips quivered slightly and slowly, you turned your head to bury it into his chest, not wanting anyone to see the way tears formed in your eyes.
After much time, you all returned back to the camp, quieter. By the time you all got back, dinner was already shared amongst the clan but, your grandmother was kind enough to leave some for your family. Quickly, sensing that your father would have a serious talk, you led Neteyam, Lo'ak, Kiri, and Tuk to the family's hut to eat. Making sure they all started to eat, you stepped out of the tent, your own food in hand, and closed the tent's flap, securing them inside. You might've not been the eldest but, you had that instinct to protect them all from whatever conversation father might have. As you ate quietly, you heard father warn grandmother about the Sky People before turning to talk to mother, only for the discussion to flare up.
