when i forget to log into ao3 and i have to click proceed to see an adult fic, i actually get a kick out of it. like i am an old timey queen and my bard is apologetic: “gentle lady, dicks doth touch in this next ballad. would you prefer another?” and i give him a gesture of command like, “nay, you may proceed, minstrel. bring forth the tale of dicks”
hope it’s not too late; I made this in Scriptorium
this tiktok screenshot ruined my life i need to see the serbian pigeon movie so so badly but it doesn't exist it's so foul to make this bad of a point with something so cool and then take it away from me.
Tiktok marvel fans really will be out here like "movie fan SHOCKED because i'd rather watch superhero movie #54 in blue and not a sensual 1987 french horror film about a man discovering his wife may not exist set in what is gradually revealed to be a space station" as if you're supposed to agree that superhero movie #54 is the clear winner in this comparison
Love the idea of a story about a complex issue that's told from the perspective of something that cannot comprehend or care about the issue. The way the story would be sliced up and moments that a human would consider pointless would be focused on because the pigeon happened to be there would be hype as fuck
Ok FINE I made the movie poster of it
Mališa, otherwise known as Little One, is a pet pigeon owned by a conservative butler of the Austro-Hungarian aristocracy. She is loved, and she is pampered— until her owner is murdered in cold blood, and she is left to fend for herself in Sarajevo.
In the wilds of the city, she feeds from the poor, working nationalist radicals, and the vieux riches alike.
To Mališa, there are no ethical concerns. No politics. No burgeoning nationalism.
There are only hands that feed her, and hands that do not.
This is compelling. Consider me fucking compelled.
Final shot is the bird hearing, but not seeing, the sound of a .32 ACP pistol, and flying away in shock
"From the studio that brought you Goncharov...."
yeah okay ill reblog that
”there are only the hands that feed her, and those that do not” yeah-
we cannot live in chains
you write people having good sex you're just writing porn but you write people having bad sex. now you're writing a story
You give it all the romance elements. Worse, you make it slow burn. Really pile on the yearning and the sexual tension. Then when it comes time to do the do, it's bad. So bad even the characters know it's bad. And not in the "we are just learning each other's bodies!" Type of way. Like they both leave the situation wondering if it was the others first time on earth (important to note neither think that they're the problem)
Now rather than the last 3 chapters being a happily ever after, they have to contend with all the bridges they burned to get here and what kind of relationship they've found themselves in and if they're willing to fight for each other when it's an internal battle rather than one waged against love rivals
Stupid question i heard someone stupid podcasters discussing the other day so bringing it over here to see if im really in the minority with this one

what day is bin day?
monday
tuesday
wednesday
thursday
friday
saturday
sunday
I dont know
I dont have a bin day (explain????)
(bin day meaning the day you take your wheelie bins out to the curb for the rubbish to be collected)
No bin day for me. Our bins stay where they are, on our property, under a roof and behind a saloon door. The car that collects the trash parks next to the bins and the collectors wheel the bins to the car.
The car, in our case, picks the trash every 8 weeks currently - we compost and recycle so more is not needed but if we wanted to, we could buy more collections.

i'm going to say something insane. i think the overall pronounced fandom cultural slide away from complex plotty violent work and towards kidfic and coffee shops AUs and cozy domestic romcoms is a symptom of fascism.
I heavily disagree with this and think this is some kneejerk reactionary bullshit, but you know, go ahead and keep disparaging ‘normies’ like people are doing in the notes. That’ll really endear you to fluff fic writers.
Fuck you.
I say this with genuine, and I do actually mean genuine, respect, but the point of the original post wasn’t to put an equals sign between fluff/cozy fic/coffeeship AUs and fascism. The point of the post was to draw attention to the very real push toward a "cultural hegemony" that happens every time fascist ideology takes hold of a culture. The rest under a cut for length.
In this case, it is white Euro-American Christofascism that demonizes and criminalizes any sexuality that is not reproductively-driven sex between cisgender heterosexual men and women. It is Christofascism that calls any sex not cishet sex for the singular purpose of procreation (or any physical or psychological deviance) degeneracy, which is a buzzword that eugenicists have used for decades to justify conversion therapy for gay kids, forced sterilization of mentally ill people and POC, and the illegality of gay marriage.
Christofascism hates any violence that is not the violence of its own against The Other (which is anyone not drinking the kool aid). It weaponizes “family-friendly values” to wash out any nuance and moral complexity from a piece of art. It weaponizes “family-friendly values”, a distinctly white American Christofascist construct, to delegitimize, suppress, and erase any story that does not conform to its standards. Which includes… a lot.
If you look at the larger trend of mainstream (film) storytelling over the last 30 years, you can see this clearly. We had films, shows, and stories in the mainstream that would never have been able to be made today: Full Metal Jacket (1987), a viciously, violently antiwar film. Leon The Professional (1994) about a middle aged hitman who befriends a precociously sexual preteen girl and teaches her how to kill people. That 70s Show, which was much more recent (ended in the early aughts) but still showed minors drinking alcohol and smoking pot onscreen. Entrapment (1999), a film where a young woman in her 20s or very early 30s gets sexually and romantically involved with a man in his 70s. Contrast that with today, when the most “edgy” thing in the mainstream is an irony-poisoned superhero movie that relentlessly queerbaits its audience but makes it painfully clear that No, Actually, They’re Not Gay, They’re Just Doing It For The Lols. No shade if you genuinely enjoyed Deadpool and Wolverine, by the way. I did too; thought it was funny as shit. But it's also very much a product of its sociocultural time, and the time is Kinda Bad.
Thankfully we do have people still making genuinely Good stories with heavier, more complex, more morally grey themes, but my point stands.
So was everything better back then? Oh hell no. Sexism and racism were also onscreen full bore, so in that way we have moved forward. But my point is not to say “back then things were better”, which is, itself, an authoritarian dogwhistle. My point is that rightwing Christofascist authoritarianism, with the help of corporations and governments lacking the political will to oppose it, has driven much of the nuance and humanity from mainstream storytelling to serve its sociopolitical agenda and it has begun to show in the downstream culture of fandom.
This is where authoritarianism on the left wing rears its head: why you see people getting kicked out of discord servers for offenses that would get them nothing more than a hard look in real life. The insistence that shows up on both sides of the political aisle: that fiction is reality is fiction. On the right, this looks like "violent video games are turning my kid into a murderer". On the left, this looks like "this person wrote a fictional minor having sex with a fictional adult, so the person is a CSA apologist in real life and should die."
That is the truly reactionary bullshit in this scenario.
I myself, a frequent creator of exactly the kind of content this authoritarian fandom culture hates, have been kicked out of several fandoms and have received several death threats for writing things that violate this purity culture that has developed in so many fandom spaces nowadays. My friends and people I know have been victims of the same. And it has only gotten worse over the last 15 or so years.
This purity culture is what the original post is meant to talk against. The purity culture is performative, closed-minded, and (left-wing) authoritarian. It finds any art that does not meet the purity standard (see above) disgusting, degenerate (there’s that word again), and unfit to exist. It incentivizes simple, nonthreatening stories; stories that do not require the reader to think critically or face any kind of moral conflict. In the mental landscape of the authoritarian, Moral Good is cozy, comfortable, white-coded, simple, and does not force one to confront or examine one's morality or ideology. Moral Evil is complicated, nuanced, scary, colorful, and defiantly deviant.
But again, this does not mean that if you write, read, or enjoy these kinds of stories, that you are a fascist. It just highlights this false equivalency between Moral Evil and thematic darkness/deviancy.
I hope this helps make sense of the original post a little.

As we're getting into the colder months people will be using hot water bottles more frequently here's just a little reminder you shouldn't be using hot water bottles if they're more than 2 years old as over time plastic disintergrats and the chances of the hot water bottle bursting rises each hot water bottle comes with a daisy wheel on the neck to tell you when they were made and here's a little picture to help you read it
three types of reaction on this post:
"Well ive had my hot water bottle for years and im fine"
"Yeah this is how I/ someone I know got burnt"
"why the fuck would they use a daisy wheel??!?"

4. "Wtf that's almost a single use item, this should be made illegal"
saw this being debated and just wanted to talk about it too.
"is it rude if I politely ask a writer if they use ai or chatgpt on their works because I'm almost certain they do?"
yes, it is rude. no matter how polite you are being when you ask them this.
you say you are almost certain. so you are not absolutely certain.
unless you are absolutely, undoubtedly certain — with actual proof — that their writing is ai generated, never ever ask an artist if their work is ai generated.
I know several writers who would stop writing and delete all of their works if they were ever accused of using ai. so it doesn't matter if you are polite when you ask them this, you are suggesting that their works are ai generated, that they didn't create the works they could have spent hours, days, weeks, months or years working on.
ai and chatgpt are trained on real humans' works, they are trained to mimic the way real humans write. so if you say a genuine writer's work "looks ai", I'm gonna have to ask you what you think ai was trained on.
a writer whose English isn't their first language may also write in a way that "looks ai" to some, if they write in English and have to rely on translator.
using em dash isn't a sign of ai. I do it all the time. my fellow writers all love em dash.
having long paragraphs with "overly described scenes" isn't a sign of ai. I do it all the time, and so do my fellow writers.
all the "ai signs" are actually just what most writers actually do. they get mistaken for "ai signs" because sometimes the way writers write or describe a scene in a fanfic or an original work is different than the way people talk or text. because they're writing a fic and describing a scene, not chatting with a friend. the way I talk is different than the way I write my fics.
if you suspect a work was ai generated, but are not 100% sure, you can always just stop reading said work without saying anything.
if someone does use ai to write, they will either a.) deny and continue using ai to write or b.) admit because they see nothing wrong with it and continue using ai to write.
if a genuine writer was wrongly accused of using ai, they may stop writing altogether.
asking a writer if they use ai or chatgpt to write will always do more harm than good. witch hunting will always do more harm than good.
you are not "fighting against ai" by throwing around such accusations. you are harming genuine writers and artists.
strong disagree. it is a choice to categorize something as rude and we shouldn't be trying to make it a faux pas to ask a question. maybe they didn't use ai, okay, it's fine. say that. it is not the responsibility of the question asker if someone is so easily destabilized that they would delete all of their works over being asked one question. you cannot put that weight on other people.
if you are talking about someone whose works you paid to read, sure, you may ask them about what you're paying for and how it was created (if it was made by a human or a robot). but fanfic writers write for free. you read their works for free. if you are unsure about whether or not the work you're reading for free is ai, you can make your own decision to either continue reading or click the exit button.
if most fanfic writers say they feel discouraged to be asked if their works are ai generated, then the polite, decent thing to do is not to ask them that. you don't know if or how much your question will affect a writer. and yes, asking if they used ai to write is an accusation, because you are implying that their works don't look human enough to you.
last but not least, fanfic writers don't owe you anything.
Also "we shouldn't be trying to make it a faux pas to ask a question."
Strongly disagree. There are plenty of questions that you shouldn't ask strangers because it can negatively impact them. For instance, it's widely considered rude to ask a random woman if she's pregnant just because you think she looks it.
Part of interacting with other people is taking into account how your words might impact them even if you're genuinely trying to ask.
And the responsibility is on you if you're going out of your way to ask demoralizing questions. If you find yourself wanting to ask if something is AI, click out. Easy enough fix. If the possibility bothers you enough to risk hurting an author, simply stop reading their work.
As a writer, I'd any day, hour or minute prefer to be asked and have a chance to say that no, I don't use AI, than lose audience over em dash.
I never thought I'd find a bad reason for someone to stop reading a fic or whatever, but today was the day: "What if this person uses ai, oh no, my virtue is at risk!"
Like sure, if you hate the em dash or whatever , close the fic and go read something else!
If you like what you read but suspect there's a chance that AI was involved... well. Don't just disappear. For me and many writers I know, the most disheartening thing is that we feel like we are talking to a wall. An empty room with no audience. *This hurts many of us most.* We don't want to lose you.
(Why would anyone assume a truthful answer for AI use, that's a different story...)
Some people don’t want to hear this but sometimes accessibility is not sustainable or eco-friendly. Disabled people sometimes need straws, or pre-made meals in plastic containers, or single-use items. Just because you can work with your foods in their least processed and packaged form doesn’t mean everyone else can.
I mean, yes.
But also packaging is not (just) bad!
We should not aim for the least least processed, least packaged form of food by default. That's basically raw milk talk. You know - foodstuff that when left unprocessed and not packaged will go bad quickly and either make someone sick or need to be thrown out.
Unconsumed. Adding into food waste. Meaning that all CO2 from the whole production and transport chain was released for nothing. All the fresh water was used for nothing. All the chemicals and energy and resources that went to produce the fertilizer on the field were used for nothing, and all the fertilizers that leached to our waters went there for nothing.
And people, we don't want this. This is the opposite of sustainable consumption.
I don't want to go too deep in detail rn, esp. as I think I just deleted the slides with references I used to teach at uni. But the point is that the package is supposed to protect its content, like a milk carton protects pasteurized milk, allowing the milk to be safely consumed days and days after purchase.
Is there other functions of packages? Absolutely!
Are some of those unsustainable and crappy and there mainly to feed consumption and capitalist greed? Absolutely!
But a lot has to do with safety, food-related and other.
We should not by default aim for unprocessed and not packaged.
Instead we, disabled and non-disabled and who and whatever, should demand for better, more sustainable packaging.
What it is, that varies case by case. Everyone can understand that meat or fish waiting to be purchased needs different things to stay good and safe than, say, a bag of dried beans. Also losing 1 kg of beef to spoilage tends to mean bigger environmental footprint caused for nothing, than if you lose 1 kg bag of dry beans for spoilage. This sort of stuff means we have to figure out the best balance between the right level of protective packaging and preventing the food waste.
So don't be too upset about that plastic straw or ready-made meal wrapped in plastic. Instead ask why you can't recycle it.
a fun thing that happens during this process is you'll have these private companies hire the ejected government employees who are experts in their respective field. the private company will then contract with the government to replace the lost function or service
so you have the exact same people doing the exact same labor but now you have a CEO/board of directors and a shit ton of other overhead costs in addition to the base cost of labor. This means the amount of services per tax payer dollar falls drastically. All in the name of "efficiency" and "lowering costs"
Private or public, you'll pay their salaries.
You'll pay their physical space.
You'll pay their their equipment.
You'll pay their IT and whatever the shit they need/use to operate.
When it's privatized, you'll pay their profits too.
