Monica Piloni: portraits series (2013)
theres a trump supporter in my media arts major and sometimes my professor will ask him something simple like "whats the difference between ethics and the law" and he'll (i kid you not) say shit like "uhhh its like. honestly i thought that was like the same thing" and then my professor will give the rest of the class a mischievous knowing look
absolutely the worst part of the male helplessness fetishism is that men know about it and will weaponize it against you. they will fuck up and do stupid shit and pretend not to know how to clean a mirror or find grapes at the grocery store and then simper and giggle expecting you to think its adorable. and then they will get REALLY angry when you do not
OP(!) this should not be hidden in the tags
"blood quantum" vs "one drop"
These are core tools white supremacy uses to dictate who is and isn't white.
During European colonization and enslavement,
African Americans were categorized according to the “one-drop rule,” where one-sixteenth African ancestry might have qualified one as Black. Native Americans, on the other hand, were codified using blood quantum, where one-quarter Native American ancestry might not have been enough to designate a person as Indigenous. ...Both constructions of race were tied to European economic realities, [Dr. Belén] Unzueta says. “African Americans were exploited for labor, while Native Americans were exploited for land. If you’re looking to exploit land, it’s better for people to disappear. If you’re looking to exploit labor, it’s better if the population grows.”
Here in the U.S. -- and in American-dominated spaces, like academic publishing and much of the Anglophone internet -- our understanding of oppression is still centered on controlling categories.
White supremacists focus on silencing discussion of oppression, and erasing oppressed groups.
Opponents of white supremacy often focus on which groups "count." Which ones are oppressed enough to matter. Based mainly on vibes.
The system imposed on Native Americans, blood quantum, was a way to diminish the number of Natives to whom the government owed something in exchange for land.
-- Kliph Nesteroff, We Had a Little Real Estate Problem: The Unheralded Story of Native Americans & Comedy
Any system of "who counts" that isn't based on listening to a group about their personal experiences of oppression is just oppression quantum.

For those unaware, it's been a week now since a Mi'kmaq-led blockade has been put up to protect Hunter's Mountain in Unama'ki.
The forestry industry claims they are dutifully replanting what they cut down, but that is not actually true. They are harvesting softwood trees, and then replanting them with spruce and fur. By doing so, they are harmfully changing the biodiversity of the forest, which impacts all that lives there, including the endangered moose of the highlands! They have no appreciation or understanding of Netukulimk. They do not even count the Mi'kmaq as consultants! This cannot continue!
Please keep the L'nu defenders on the frontlines of this fight in your thoughts, as the RCMP presence increases.

Today's Problematic ship is the MV Thamesborg
The MV Thamesborg is a 173 m Dutch-registered general cargo ship. Around midnight UTC on September 7, 2025, while she was transiting the Franklin Strait of the Northeast passage en route from China to the east coast of Canada, she became stuck in the Arctic sea ice. According to the operator Wagenborg there have been no injuries to the crew or environmental damage. The Canadian Coast Guard has dispatched two ice breakers to assist the MV Thamesborg.
Inuit knew the terror was there the whole damn time and no one found it cuz white people don't listen

male gaze is not 'when person look sexy' or 'when misogynist make film'
death of the author is not 'miku wrote this'
I don't think you have to read either essay to grasp the basic concepts
death of the author means that once a work is complete, what the author believes it to mean is irrelevant to critical analysis of what's in the text. it means when analysing the meaning of a text you prioritise reader interpretation above author intention, and that an interpretation can hold valid meaning even if it's utterly unintentional on the part of the person who created the thing. it doesn't mean 'i can ignore that the person who made this is a bigot' - it may in fact often mean 'this piece of art holds a lot of bigoted meanings that the author probably wasn't intentionally trying to convey but did anyway, and it's worth addressing that on its own terms regardless of whether the author recognises it's there.' it's important to understand because most artists are not consciously and vocally aware of all the possible meanings of their art, and because art is communal and interpretive. and because what somebody thinks they mean, what you think somebody means, and what a text is saying to you are three entirely different things and it's important to be able to tell the difference.
male gaze is a cinematographic theory on how films construct subjectivity (ie who you identify with and who you look at). it argues that film language assumes that the watcher is a (cis straight white hegemonically normative) man, and treats men as relatable subjects and women as unknowable objects - men as people with interior lives and women as things to be looked at or interacted with but not related to. this includes sexual objectification and voyeurism, but it doesn't mean 'finding a lady sexy' or 'looking with a sexual lens', it means the ways in which visual languages strip women of interiority and encourage us to understand only men as relatable people. it's important to understand this because not all related gaze theories are sexual in nature and if you can't get a grip on male gaze beyond 'sexual imagery', you're really going to struggle with concepts of white or abled or cis subjectivities.

This Sky News article does not exist; it looks like there are several online sources that also tried to fact check this before me and found that it originated from a meme page.
Here is a Newsweek article about an ex-ICE employee who quit working at the ICE legal office as an attorney. Boyd is quoted as saying he "had to make a moral decision."
Here is an article from The Atlantic with the headline, Trump Loves ICE. Its Workforce Has Never Been So Miserable. "Having insisted for years that capturing criminals is its priority, ICE is now shelving major criminal investigations to prioritize civil immigration arrests, grabbing asylum seekers at their courthouse hearings, handcuffing mothers as their U.S.-citizen children cry, chasing day laborers through Home Depot parking lots. As angry onlookers attempt to shame ICE officers with obscenities, and activists try to dox them, officers are retreating further behind masks and tactical gear.
"'It’s miserable,' one career ICE official told me."
The Independent, a UK source, reports a story headlined, Inside the ICE offices where morale is ‘miserable’ and the deportation push has become ‘mission impossible.’ "The ex-official added: 'Even those that are gung ho about the mission aren’t happy with how they are asking to execute it—the quotas and the shift to the low-hanging fruit to make the numbers.'"
[...] "There’s a notable shift in priorities from trying to keep the nation safe to being quota-driven, some officials said. “No drug cases, no human trafficking, no child exploitation,” a veteran agent told The Atlantic. 'It’s infuriating.' The agent is considering quitting rather than having to continue 'arresting gardeners.'"
I have a deep interest in figuring out what we can do to continue to encourage people to quit and leave ICE a completely debilitated institution, with no one willing to work for it. Whenever I continue to find more legitimate news pertaining to people quitting ICE, I will do my best to bring that news here to Tumblr.
Reporting fake news does literally nothing to help the people we are in this to help.
I'm not raining on anyone's parade by ensuring we try to provide factual information about the state of the news, and let each other know very clearly when we are making a joke. Every minute, people are doing their best to make plans for their actual lives and safety based on the factual state of ICE, military, and law enforcement in this country.
Tangential to this, the recent ICE uh, "raid" in MacArthur Park, Los Angeles has apparently pissed off members of the military who were forced to participate. They're so irritated that they leaked the plans for the mission.
Many in the military who are on the ground in Los Angeles think that ICE and others from homeland security dressing up in Army green and using armored vehicles on the streets of an American city undermines the reputation of the armed forces. At least in the field, they don’t want to be part of any Trump crusade, and are hesitant about being mixed in theatrical shows of force, which the MacArthur Park operation was.
That leak has triggered an internal investigation.
The chemical name for vitamin C is “ascorbic acid”. I always used to wonder about this one. Is being ascorbic like being acerbic? Is it like being ascetic? Absorbent? Some combination of all of them?
Today I learned that scorbi is just a Latinish way of writing scurvy. So a-scorbi-c acid is “no-scurvy acid”.
Eat this orange. It’s full of FuckScurvium.
"the average income in <X> is <Y> of <currency>" cool, what's the median
Average isn't useful here. however, after a little bit of research, apparently the median income in the US is $24,327, which means the reality is actually much worse than this meme makes it seem. yay!

i am not happy with our choices this election. But you should know that the reason he's the first president to "refuse" a cognitive test is because one isn't included in the presidential physical exam in the first place.
There was a petition of doctors who wanted Trump's cognitive function tested during his physical exam, and everybody involved on the republican side said no, and then Trump himself actually insisted he did take one in a fit of ego. He was, as far as i can tell, the first president to ever take one while in office.
At his request for the cognitive testing, Trump's doctor administered the Montreal Cognitive Assessment which is like 5 questions and has not been proven to be an accurate test of much at all. It's a lot like when you hit your head and they ask you the date and your name and stuff -- answering correctly in no way means you don't have a head injury or concussion or whatever, it's just a couple of first step questions. Then Trump said a lot of lies and bullshit about his "cognitive test"
Now republicans and right leaning publications are spreading shit like this. Biden didn't "refuse" a cognitive test, his aides confirmed that, as usual, a cognitive test is not included during the president's doctor visit.
again, i think our choices are shit this election, i don't like how old Biden is, and i think the way our first-past-the-poll voting system automatically results in an extremist two party system fronting candidates that the majority of the country doesn't like is some fucked up bullshit
but our house is on fire and one candidate is a bucket of water that won't help much and the other is a bucket of gasoline, and, y'know, angry as i am about it all i am still going to vote for the bucket of water while we look for other solutions
Don't let them trick you into letting gasoline get thrown on this fire please
At this point I’m not even posting this for politics reasons, I’m posting it because my GOD you gullible bitches need to learn how extremely basic propaganda works. Jesus christ.
