A word about sam, dean and John.

There is this amazing moment when Azazel is wearing John, trying to kill Dean, and Dean begs for his dad not to kill him–and he stops.  But I never hear anything about the other side of the scene.

Sam, staring down the Colt at his dad.  Being told by his Dad to kill the Demon-to kill him.   And you can see him considering it. His dad has absolved him, the same way he absolved his brother of the ones he killed.  His hand is steady, and he is just looking down at him.

It’s Dean that tells him not to.  It’s Dean that finally realizes that they are stronger together.  And that yes, sometimes there is a sacrifice play, but not like this.  Even John doesn’t get it, not right then.

Because he goes and does the expedient thing, he makes a deal for Dean.  After everything, he makes a deal for dean.

Do you know why this is important?  Because that moment, that moment where Sam, the one who was always railing against him and his ‘cause’ realized that family was more important than anything (As he tells his dad in the car.)  I think this is the thing that keeps John from breaking on the rack.  That his Son believed so strongly that the three of them were stronger together he was willing to defy his father’s order, and common sense, to save his family.

John, of course then responds by being an idiot, he’s a father, they do stupid things.  But in the one moment, on the other side of the colt, Sam got two things he thought he always wanted.  Azazel dead, and out from under his father, away from the 'crusade’ from the 'madness’ that his father had inflicted on him.  But he realized that he was just doing what he thought was right.  He was just trying to protect his boys from the thing that killed their mom.  The thing he was Terrified would come back and kill his sons too.  

I think John had always considered himself a dead man.  That was why he didn’t even think about it, he made the sacrifice play.  He would rather die and go to hell, never seeing mary again, than admit he can’t protect his boys anymore than he could protect his wife.

In the end it was all three of them who killed Azazel.  Family.

*Sherlock takes a few measured breaths once he is done, just looking at the other, waiting for his opinions on his deductions. At hearing he’d got most of them right, he exhales in relief. Good, not gone mad then. He could live as long as he could still deduct.* 

I assume that it’s all real. Ghosts, vampires, the whole lot.

*He doesn’t want to believe the words coming out of his mouth, but he hasn’t got a lot of choice any more.* 

And these demons, they want me? Ha, there aren’t many in London who would mind if I died, you know. Be it by demons or not.

What can I do about it?

Well, there’s a couple simple things you can do to keep them away from you, keep them from being able to possess you.  Talismans and things that don’t have to be visible to work.  Then there are the quick-and-dirty protections, salt, holy water.  In fact, the gun you pointed out and the mate under the couch are loaded with rocksalt.  They’ll hurt a human but even point-blank they won’t kill ya.  They are for spirits mainly but lesser level demons don’t like ‘em much either.  

The only way to actually get rid of them is an exorcism rite or a sacred weapon.  There ain’t that many of the latter to go around.  

As stupid as they are, I don’t think they will try a frontal assault though.  Especially because you know me.  I’ll keep looking for Rehuel and see if I can get rid of him cause if he is the ringleader, the rest of them will be pretty disorganized.  Demons are smart enough not to have anyone smarter than them as a subordinate.

*Sherlock stood, for he couldn’t keep still any longer. He won’t admit to being agitated, but it is a fairly accurate description of how he feels right now. He paces a few steps either way, his fingers tracing his lips, occasionally biting at fingernails.* 

So I can protect myself. Good. Fine. Let’s do that. I am not…

*He swallows, suddenly imagining it. He feels trapped inside his own mind most of the time anyway, to be literally unable to do anything but be there? He doesn’t know if he can handle that, mentally. It would probably crack him. Interesting for perhaps five minutes, but trapped with his own thoughts, a passenger in his own body, he could not cope.* 

I am not prepared to allow anyone to possess me, by my choice or not. No.

*Hands him a small silver charm on a cord.*  Best to wear it under your clothes where it can't be gotten at.  Don't take it off, even when you sleep.  *Hands him a small flask.*  It's holy water, I'll give you the name of a local hunter in your area unless you want to try your hand at blessing it.  You see someone showing signs of being possessed, either offer them a drink from the flask or spill it on them.  If its a demon you'll see the same reaction you saw with Rehuel.  You could also put it in tea, use it to wipe down a glass.  Anything that would leave water behind. it Don't take much.

Other than that, salt up.  I mean, you ain't got a demon-killer and you ain't versed in rituale Romanum so the best you can do is keep 'em off you and call for backup.  Like I said, I keep in touch with the London Area hunters because of some of the haunted places there.

Hank started tapping the steering wheel in time to the music, unthinkingly, as he drove down the road.

*Bobby laughed.*  Nah, that’ll do nicely.  *Starts singing along. He is surprised that his singing voice is as strong as it once was, not longer strained and broken by the decades of alcohol.*

I was born extra strong, fast and agile, with the ape-like hands and feet, but the fur came when I took the serum I had been working on, myself, to keep it out of nefarious hands.”

“I thought I would be able to counter-act the effects. I was wrong.”

I can imagine.  I ain't seen my momma since I was sixteen, I was even banned from her service... I came anyway, stayed in the distance.  *Shrugged.*  Price I paid for trying to protect her.  Got sent to the YA, got out and found out she'd hooked up with a boyfriend almost as bad as my dad.  But she let it be known I wasn't welcome under her roof 'cause she didn't want no more repeats.  I know she was just afraid they'd lock me up and throw away the key, but it was hard.

Met Karen while I was workin' my way cross country.  She didn't care about my past.

Just one tiny problem.  What about those on contract?  I mean…  Do they go down?  they stay up?  I mean the demons can’t come back up to get them… but does that void the contract, or just make it due early?

And ‘sides, I can’t see him letting me get away with that.  He’d find some way to turn this in his favor. Prolly send me down with him just cause he can.  And with the gate closed, ain’t gonna be a way to climb back like your dad did.

Dean chewed on the inside of his lip and muttered to himself. “Well, I guess we just ask Kev. I’m sure there’s gotta be something on that piece of rock that’ll clear that shit up with us. I mean, somebody had to think about that. People have been making deals since we knew demons existed.”

Now, he sits with his eyes closed even as the other returns, still filtering through all the new information he had become privy to.* 

No alcohol. Impairs thinking. Sulphur-?

*He cuts himself off, remembering the smell of the sulphur as the… thing had left the younger man.*

You’ve recovered from a serious paralysing injury in the last… three years, and the thoughts of that still trouble you. You also recently had reason to leave this house, it was destroyed, but you couldn’t, and not because there was something real holding you here. Memories and sentiment, then.

Dean just watched as Bobby talked. He didn’t want to screw up again, say something he shouldn’t. His mind was still on Al, but he couldn’t pull it away this time. He needed sleep, wasn’t used to hunter’s hours anymore. “No joke. Maybe we’ll get lucky and they’ll decide to lay off for a few more days,” he said and yawned a little.

*Bobby realized dean was out of practice, but he hadn't figured he was quite this gone.  Either way he'd have to let the kid rest if he wanted him to be of any use.  So, as soon as he was done with the interview he pulled them into the same diner, got them dinner to go and headed back for the hotel.  To be honest, he needed the extra time.  Now that he knew what they were after, it would take some time to get the stuff together. *

You'd better hit the rack it's gonna be an early morning and lots of hikin'.  This thing is a damn good hunter.  We got ourselves a wendigo.

*Sherlock practically bristles at what the demon is saying, subconsciously taking half a step backwards. He feels oddly exposed and in danger, even though he knows - well, he’d been told anyway - that the thing is contained by the drawings on the floor.

He knows enough Latin to understand most of what Bobby is saying, talking about banishing an evil spirit. Most of it is buried under the boy’s yells, however, echoing from the iron walls of the chamber he’s contained in. Sherlock can do nothing but watch, eyes widening and face paling as the smoke leaves the boy. He says nothing, attempting to logically understand what has just happened. And he’s none the wiser.*

No, of course, you… do whatever you want to him. I’ll just… wait up there.

*And with that, he turns tail, heading back up to the living room - and the tea - without looking back, feeling rather rattled. What he has just seen defies all logic, and yet, he saw it.*

*Bobby came back into the living room in a little bit with tea and a flask.*  Got something stronger if you need it.  I am sorry to have to shake your world like that. In order for you to understand the rest that I am going to show you You had to understand that I ain’t crazy.

I had a bit of an ulterior motive.  This ain’t the first sulfur breather to mention your name.  They got it out for you, and I couldn’t in good conscience leave you in the dark and undefended.

So, in light of what you have seen, even if you want to deny it, at least concede that I know what I’m talking about, any other deductions?  

*Bobby tried to steer the topic back to something the detective could wrap his mind around.  He’d get to the shapeshifter later, once Sherlock had had time to process.  Bringing a civilian in was always hard.  But, as much as he hated to do it, to shatter their sense of safety, He’d heard this man’s names in connection with plans, plans meant to tempt him into a deal.*

The only thing that would have done was leave me burying two of ya.  You ain’t been toe-to-toe with this thing, the reports we’ve had, everyone that faces him dies, ain’t been clocked in one place long enough to use Rituale romanum on him and he’s a hell of a lot more powerful than most of the demons I’ve ever seen.  And I’ve been after demons since they killed Karen.

A little bit of trouble...Car trouble. (Bobby and Shawn.)

Bobby didn’t hear the motorcycle, of course that was probably because its owner was walking it in.  For a moment he didn’t recognize the young man in front of him as he stood there, taking his helmet off, but after a minute, Bobby knew him as the young man who had worked at the yard one summer.  It must have been a College job or something.  

Bobby hated to admit it wasn’t the young man he remembered as much as the bike.  Bobby always did have a head for cars and bikes.  He could tell you almost any car he had serviced.  The kid had been a good worker, and had mostly rebuilt the bike in the time he was working at the yard.  

Of course, Bobby had kept as mum as he could about the Hunting aspect of the place, making sure he wasn’t around when the other hunters came in.  He stood a moment trying to remember the young man’s name.

“Shawn?”

Shawn offered the male a grin when he said his name. “You know that’s right,” he said as he set his helmet aside. He peered around the home, grinning almost like a kid in a candy store. “This place hasn’t changed a bit. Well, maybe more books than the last time I was here. Otherwise, not a bit,”  he observed.

His gaze finally landed back on the older man. “So, you said you were finally going to answer my questions? I hope you cleared your schedule, because I’ve always had a lot of them,” he said with a laugh.

*Laughs.*  You ain’t gonna believe half of them.  *Sets down the salt gun just inside the door.  He’s about ninety percent sure this is Shawn, but he’ll put some holy water in his drink to be sure.*

Bike givin’ ya grief? or just tired of ridin’?

*Waits for him to find a seat.* Beer?

Shawn gave a shrug. “You’d be amazed at what I’ll believe. And the bike’s fine. Just didn’t really want to ride it all the way from Santa Barbara to here,” he mused. That would be a pain in the ass after a few states. Plus he’d brought some changes and clothes and what not since he didn’t know how long he’d be staying. He moved to find himself a seat and thought for a moment at the offer. “Sure,” he agreed.

Bobby got two beers out of the fridge, wiping both bottles down with holy water.  If there was nothing wrong with him, he’d never notice.  Brought the beer back out with him, “Here, to ol’ friends.”

Bobby clinked bottles with him and sat across from him.  ”So you really came all this way jus’ to find Bobby’s secrets?”  Shrugged.  To each their own I guess.  Where to start though is the thing.  You’ve alway’ been damn observant, so, why don’t I let you look around a bit and ask questions, and I Ain’t even gonna shut you down.”

There were not many photos in the house, but there were three main ones mantel, The first was a woman in profile, it was about the age of his father’s photos, the others were candids, one of two young men, one with a cut over his eye, leaning on a 67 impala, and the other was Bobby, the same two men, another guy in a trenchcoat, and two ladies standing in front of the fireplace.  All three of the pictures were slightly smoke damaged.

There was a circular painting on the ceiling of the alcove where the desk was, and a sawed off shotgun peeked out from under the couch.  It’s mate was next to the door.  And just about every available space was filled with books.

Shawn took the beer with no issues, being little ol’ human him and all. he willingly clinked bottles with Bobby, giving a soft chuckle before he took a drink. “Of course I did! All those guys who used to come over, Hunters.  That's what we call ourselves.  This place has been a safe-haven for hunters for over thirty years."

The only thing that would have done was leave me burying two of ya.  You ain't been toe-to-toe with this thing, the reports we've had, everyone that faces him dies, ain't been clocked in one place long enough to use Rituale romanum on him and he's a hell of a lot more powerful than most of the demons I've ever seen.  And I've been after demons since they killed Karen.

*Sherlock was all prepared with a comeback, another question, more deductions, but then Bobby is on his feet and he is beckoned to follow. He takes a pointedly long sip of the tea before rising and following.

He is sure he has never encountered a demon. A scientist would notice the sulphur immediately, and those with a keen eye would not miss a stranger’s black pupils. Sherlock was both those things, and so much more.

The room he is led to resembles a bunker, until Sherlock sees the grill. More salt, more images painted to horizontal surfaces, and a boy the man has kidnapped. Of course, he goes on about demons, but the boy is clearly not here under his own will. Still, he stays on the right side of the line, and nods once at Bobby, still quietly disbelieving.
