Hey Tumblr,

It’s grind time. I know I have said this before but it’s actually grind time. Thanksgiving break is next week and I want to have any semblance of peace I should complete as much work as I can now.

So today we arose. We walked to the library. We ate yogurt. We have a lot of overdue math and coding assignments to complete. And a bibliography to do for my law class.

But it’s ok- because the semester won’t finish me I’ll finish it.

I hate how people will look at popular indie artists who had one or two songs go viral on TikTok and start making fun of anybody who listens to them. "Oh you listen to Lemon Demon, Will Wood, Jack Stauber, Glass Animals, and Mother Mother? Tsk, don't you know that is stupid TikTok neurodivergent white transmasc preteen music? It's so mid and bad you should listen to real music–" you are a pit of misery

I have been made aware that this is not common knowledge and so wanted to announce that ChatGPT is not a search engine and not supposed to know answers to things. It's a language model- it's trained to talk like a person. Not to know information or understand how to do operations or really even reasoning

The trouble is they absolutely market it as a way to get answers to questions

so many of the "i only use chat gpt for ___" excuses are concerning because people use it in place of learning basic, valuable skills.

you don't need chat gpt to write professional sounding emails for you, there are many many guides on the internet and with a bit of practise you can learn to write them yourself. a very important skill for a professional to have, and some of the basic rules will carry over into irl conversations!

you don't need chat gpt to be a "more detailed search engine", because you're robbing yourself of the chance to learn how to find and filter information on the internet and evaluate the credibility of sources. which is a VITAL skill. plus, chat gpt is notorious for being wrong?

if you use it to write essays, you're taking away your ability to hone your research skills, your writing skills, your critical thinking skills. your ability to create persuasive arguments!

and for most of the other reasons people use chat gpt, there are non-ai websites for that! for maths, wolfram alpha. for figuring out what you can cook with the ingredients you have there's supercook and the like. for creating routines, there's about a million apps!

whatever you "only" use chatgpt for i promise there are better websites out there that you don't have to worry will produce complete bullshit???? and destroy the environment???

my friend is a college professor and has reliably called a paper as being ai written before running it through the detection software. Because they fucking suck.

On the hiring committees I've been on, we automatically discard anything that seems like it was written by ChatGPT. Emails that sound like AI get deleted as spam. Students get dinged right out the gate for using ChatGPT to write their intro discussion posts.

I know it's tempting to use it. I know everyone and their mom is telling you it's this great tool (pssst because they're trying to sell you something). But you're not doing yourself any favors every time you use it as a short-cut to do something important. It's not going to get you that job, it's not going to get you through college, and it's really not going to do you any favors if you're using it to replace an actual skill you should learn.

Local elections and local politics are some of the most important for the environmental cause.

Laws forbidding you from keeping chickens, growing vegetables, or having a pollinator garden? Parks have invasive bushes and giant lawns but no natural space? Town has no sidewalks? Wetland getting sold to a developer?

These are LOCAL laws, LOCAL policies, and LOCAL decision-making!

Which means they can be changed on a local level. It is much easier than changing the whole world, and can start a pattern of other places doing the same thing.

Vote in local elections. Be involved in local politics. Go to town hall meetings. Learn what plans there are for your community.

If you do not have electricity, the radio may be your only source of information!

Local radio will: give weather updates, give updates on restoring power, let you know if you need to evacuate or are on evacuation alert, and as a bonus, it can provide entertainment/music.
