This past Sunday I had the pleasure of meeting artist Kelvin Okafor. The 2 images above are not photographs, but pencil drawings sometimes taking upwards of 100 hours to complete. This is evident in their photographic quality and seen in person the detail is astounding! His work is definitely something to be appreciated, however how much artistic merit can be given out for recreating an existing image I'm not sure. Some of his work says no more about the subject than the original photos do. I definitely feel that the strongest work shown was of those who he had personally worked with. Here is an excerpt taken from The Guardian's columnist Jonathan Jones: "Kelvin Okafor is a miraculous artist. If Leonardo da Vinci was alive today and he saw what Okafor has achieved with pencil, paper and a bit of charcoal, he would recognise a talent well worthy of his respect – a brother in art. So would the Dutch painter Jan Vermeer, or the Baroque genius Caravaggio." "All these great artists thought their job was to recreate, with a steady hand and a keen eye, the wonder of life. Okafor brings that craftsmanlike aspiration into the modern world."
