@unfamiliar-air
With tears in my eyes, I begged you to stay
You said “Hey man, I love you but no fucking way”
I wish Americans fucked with more foreign music. You don’t have to know the language to appreciate a good record. Folks in other countries listen to our music and don’t speak a lick of english. Music needs no translator
yall wont trick me into listening to kpop
You can try Radiooooo.com - The Musical Time Machine!!
choose a country, pick a decade, and GO!!
you’ll get an endless streaming of songs (ad free!).
I personally found myself loving 1970s Ghana, Senegal and Cote d’Ivoire! Also 1920s and 1970s Japan for sure! Cambodian music: spectacular. Love Armenia and Mali as well. I’ve been told 70s Germany is weird and 30s Algeria is cool but I haven’t gotten around to those yet. Italy’s 1960s is bomb ofc but I’m biased ;)
This is the best website anyone has ever shared.

if i told you what rhis sounded ljke i dont think youd believe me so just listen
the song is also on bandcamp for pwyw
the story behind the song is also very good
last year we needed new songs so in the style of the who's "a quick one" album where all the members wrote at least a couple songs each, we decided to challenge ourselves and each write a song to present to the band. alan wrote "how lucky am i?" emerson wrote "oxycontin" and matt wrote a yet-unreleased tune called "quarter two" our drummer casey, put it off til the last minute. on the day the song was due, with two hours left, he woke up in a panic, smoked a bowl, and presented us "Ængus, The Prize-Winning Hog" by plunking each note out on a piano with his index finger. it turned into a full polka-rock-nu-metal-1960's-British-car-chase-Queen-esque-mini-opera.
THEYRE ON SPOTIFY

Triple baka except they're cartoonified chibis of themselves
Here’s a hymn to welcome in the day, Heralding a summer’s early sway, And all the bulbs all coming in, to begin.

Vienna Teng - The Atheist Christmas Carol
It’s the season of grace coming out of the void Where a man is saved by a voice in the distance It’s the season of possible miracle cures Where hope is currency and death is not the last unknown Where time begins to fade And age is welcome home
It’s the season of eyes meeting over the noise And holding fast with sharp realization It’s the season of cold making warmth a divine intervention You are safe here you know now
Don’t forget Don’t forget I love I love I love you
It’s the season of scars and of wounds in the heart Of feeling the full weight of our burdens It’s the season of bowing our heads in the wind And knowing we are not alone in fear Not alone in the dark
i....found a rare shoegaze tape. legit. band does not exist online. tape is at least 20 years old. This is so Sam
rare tape.
ok ok....track for you from rare tape. ripped by me
I HAVE SOURCED MORE INFO!!!! from my friend who works at an nz audio archive and they HAVE THE TAPE THERE? COVER:
Final info ive put together after i have just looked over the insert notes (inside the other tape) sent to me by my friend:
This band had Steven Wells and Andrew Bain in it - they went on to be in a pretty popular NZ rock band called Fur Patrol from late 90s-2000s, so this is a precursor to that. in the notes they also thank Campbell Kneale, a prolific underground nz musician in bands like Birchville Cat Motel and Black Boned Angel. they also thank "Drinkwater".
alright everyone. after 33k+ notes on an obscure 90s indie song from Aotearoa i gotta admit many want to hear the rest, & as i cant think of a better format to supply this, here's the rest of the tape in this post. please let it stay here where it needs to be, don't spread it like its yours. its not mine either! i now present to you: Clayflower - Still (1993, Aotearoa, Cassette, Shoegaze/Indie Rock)
beautiful and cool obscure music like this is everywhere if you just wanna look for it even for a few minutes. dont let yourself think someone has to come along and show it to you <3
So I found this CD on the street today on my way to work, right? So I decided I’d bring it home and listen to it.
And it was the best decision I’ve ever made in my life.

LOL at all the people comparing this to ‘80s / ‘90s anime openings. My dad, who grew up Orthodox Jewish, flipped his shit when he heard the battle theme for Final Fantasy VI because it resembled Hasidic music. What is even going on, Japan?
Well this is kind of a revelation. This missing half of the equation.
Prog Rock + Hasidic tunes = 90s JRPG battle music.
OK but this post led me down a rabbit hole and I learned Hasidic music is really popular in Japan so I doubt any similarities to game / anime music is a coincidence. Holy shit u guys.
i’m glad this has resurfaced w/ v interesting commentary!

Sufjan Stevens | So You Are Tired
So you are tired of even my kiss So go back to your den Throwing out everything left in your field When there was nothing left to defend So you are dreaming of after, was it really all just for fun? I was the man still in love with you When I already knew it was done So you are tired of me, so rest your head Turning back all that we had in our life While I return to death
