On January 20, 2014, our winner of The David Lynch Foundation's campaign A Night of Peace & Love Grand Prize Experience attended David Lynch's birthday party at the El Rey Theatre in Hollywood, a night honoring Ringo Starr with the Lifetime of Peace & Love Award. A Car, a Plane, a Plane, a Car, a Car, an Event, a Car, a Car, a Plane, a Plane and a Car
When stated like that, it doesn’t sound very exciting. But take my word for it; I was totally stoked the moment I walked out of my front door on Sunday morning to head to the airport. It actually started the previous Thursday. I had been helping a friend move and I had stopped by the house to check my email. In my inbox was an email from the Urgency Network saying that I had won the grand prize trip to fly to LA to attend the award ceremony for Ringo Starr to receive an award for a lifetime of peace and love. Of course as you can imagine, I thought it was a hoax! Yes, I had entered the contest, but only had three entries when others had thousands, so there is no way I could have actually won. I mean, really, how stupid do you think I am? Things like that just don’t happen to me. I am lucky in a lot of ways, but contests are usually not one of them.
What to do? So I fired off a reply asking simply “Is this for real?” and went back to helping my friend move. When I returned home, there was a reply containing information concerning how I had actually entered the contest, so suddenly I’m thinking, “What do I do now!” because it was time to get off the pot and make a decision. The schedule for the trip was to leave on the 19th with the event on the 20th and then return on the 21st. So I grabbed my calendar to see if I was free. When I entered the contest I never bothered to see when the event was. So now I was wondering, oh great, I will have won but won’t be able to go because I will have a gig or something. I have never cancelled a gig in my whole life and was not about to start now. Not even for Ringo Starr. It’s the principle of the thing! You make a commitment and you can’t just change your mind because something better comes along. What would Ringo say about that? I didn’t think he would approve! No matter how much it hurt, if I had a gig, I was going to have to turn the trip down. So I looked at my calendar, and sure enough, I was booked at two venues. I won’t reiterate my vocal reaction, so let’s just say it wasn’t good. Then I realized I was looking at February and NOT January! The contest gods were with me! I was free! I immediately responded to the email accepting the prize!
So after a few more emails and a couple of phone calls, it all started coming together. Within hours I had my flight itinerary and Jessica Lipman at the Network was very patient with me, walking me through the process, answering my questions and making special arrangements with me due to the fact that I still live in the 20th century, not the 21st. Before I knew it, I was stepping out of my front door on my way to LA. She did a fantastic job of putting it all together and I can’t express how grateful I am for her help.
The trip itself was uneventful; I am used to traveling, so I was not nervous about it. I flew Southwest from Orlando with a connection in Denver (the mile high city, no pun intended) then on to LAX. I will say that Southwest has a unique boarding process that I found quite nice. When you check in, you get a number and then you board by that number and you can sit in any open seat. Very cool! Everyone was friendly and helpful, and gave me extra snacks. My ticket was listed as TSA Pre-board so was able to avoid the long security lines at the airport, did not have to take off my shoes, or remove toiletries from my carry on, thank you very much!
When I arrived in LA, the car was waiting for me to take me to the hotel.
Above Standard
They booked me at The Standard on Sunset Boulevard; a very nice hotel that I highly recommend, and my room overlooked the strip. The folks there are very nice and friendly, and it features a cool bar, great restaurant, pool, etc. Carney's is right across the street, with fabulous chili dogs and burgers. Love the fries. Sadie’s Ranch is two doors down from that with the House of Blues across the street, the Troubadour a little further down, and the list just goes on and on of all of the legendary venues in the area. After checking in, I walked across the street to Carney’s for a burger, and then returned to my room to try and acclimate to a different time zone. I only needed about 30% of the king size bed and slept while visions of Ringo danced in my head!
A Day to Remember
I awoke at my own pace. I was in no hurry, as the event was not starting until the evening, so I dressed and had a leisurely breakfast in the hotel restaurant. I have been to LA and Hollywood before and have taken the tours and seen the sights. I was there a couple of years ago to see Sir Paul play the Hollywood Bowl as well. I was not concerned with those things, and spent several hours walking down Sunset, watching the people and window shopping. One place I did not get to see previously was the Guitar Center on Sunset. It’s the largest in the country and features a walk of fame out front where many of the musical greats have put their hand prints. They have the most amazing collection of vintage instruments, and any musician worth his salt is going to get a kick out of seeing them, (and playing a few). What can I say? Not going to apologize! I have twenty-something guitars of my own!
The only place I did not get to on any of my trips was the old location of the Brown Derby Restaurant! It’s no longer there, but my parents were there in 1945 shortly after New Year’s where they met Alan Ladd. I still have the menu he signed. They were young and in love and I just wanted to walk where they had walked. I will make it someday.
Had a late lunch at Carney’s and then started to prep for the evening. This was going to be fantastic! I dressed for the occasion by donning a shirt sporting a large embroidered peace sign, and slogans such as “Ban the Bombs” and “Peace” on the arms, complimented by my Converse peace sign high-tops. My ride was right on time and we were off. They had the official red carpet set up out front. So prior to the start of the show, I spent my time wandering around, watching all of the people, and protecting my chosen seat like a lioness protecting her cubs. It was very cool. Everyone there seemed to know each other and it was entertaining to watch them go from person to person doing the two-kiss cheek thing. The only person they couldn’t figure out was me, and I got lots of stares and could see the wheels turning while they wondered who I was. Lots of very beautiful people.
The award presentation and concert was just unbelievable. I kept thinking “I can’t believe I am really here”! I am a Beatle fanatic from way back! My personal collection of memorabilia, records, and autographs is respectable. To me, they were the best band that has ever existed. Their musical progression from album to album is an amazing journey. Music today is what it is, because of the things that they pioneered. I never had the pleasure of seeing John or George perform live, but have seen Paul and Ringo many times in concert. I am who I am because of them; there is not much more I can say about that! So to be able to attend this event, in such an intimate venue, was like having Ringo Starr in my living room. That’s how it felt. There are no other words to describe how wonderful it was for me.
Close Encounters
I was in a row of four seats, to the right of the left aisle and just left of the center theater pit area and eleven rows from the stage. The musicians waiting to perform along with others were seated on the left side of the aisle, probably twenty feet in front of me. I considered this pretty good luck on my part. Having already won the trip in the first place, I stood by my chair, drinking a glass of beer (Bud Light never tasted so good!) and wondered if my luck would hold out much longer. Would I get to see Ringo up close? Would I get to meet him? No, that was just asking way too much of an already unbelievable situation! I mean, let’s not be greedy here! There are kids starving in Africa for crying out loud, and here I am standing knee deep in the El Rey with all that Hollywood glitter dreaming of meeting Ringo Starr.
So there I am, feeling like a deer in headlights, looking to my right of course and trying to figure out who half of these people might be. So there I am, sipping my Bud and looking out over the crowd, waiting for things to start, when I catch some movement to my left. Remember: I’m only about four feet from the aisle, and I am not really sure what made me turn my head, but I did only to find Ringo and his wife Barbara passing right by my row -- ONLY FOUR FEET AWAY FROM ME! Almost dropped my Bud Light, wondering if I was going to have to go change my undergarments, the word “camera” never even entering my mind! I can now die a very happy person. I have just been within spitting distance of one out of four of my personal gods. It’s just not going to get any better than this. So I figure I have reached a plateau of some sort and the only thing left is the downward spiral -- and the concert hasn’t even started yet. But George from Radio City, who’s sitting to my right in the next section, says not to worry, he’ll be sitting right up there, pointing a few rows in front of me. Turns out he knows Ringo (and Paul too) and because he’s in the “reserved” Ringo section and that’s how he got his ticket, I figure he ought to know!
George from Radio City knew what he was talking about because I was lucky enough to sit six seats directly behind Ringo Starr, his wife on his left, and Joe Walsh next to her. Barbara’s still hot by the way, and likes to move to the music -- but I digress. So as I said, I was feeling “very special” and still thinking “this can’t be real” and expecting to wake up in Florida in a pool of my own sweat after being slipped some illegal substance in a glass of wine or something; or possibly this was one of those flashbacks that they warned me about during my misspent and reckless youth. But hey, so far so good!
The presentation, concert and associated stuff were just fabulous! The performances were so memorable that I can still hear it in my head as I write this. The rest of the folks were hanging about, talking to each other, wandering around, drinking and generally enjoying themselves and telling each other how much fun it was to be on stage with Ringo. So I am inching my way forward and standing on the left side of the aisle, leaning against the rail, trying to look like I belonged, when I hear this voice with a distinct English accent from behind me say “Watch out brother!” and I feel a hand gently laid upon my right shoulder. So I turn my head to find RINGO STARR HAS HIS HAND ON MY SHOULDER. I vowed never to wash that shirt, but have since done so only in the name of cleanliness. But I am allowing people to touch my shoulder in that spot.

After The Fact
I had an absolute blast, got to do and see some amazing things, met some wonderful people, got a free trip to LA, hotel and driver included, and was able to attend an amazing event! Ringo Starr so deserved this recognition. The David Lynch Foundation is a great organization and both Mr. Lynch and the Urgency Network deserve a boatload of Kudos. They have many campaigns that are well worth our support, including the promotion and education of transcendental meditation as a way to rid ourselves of stress and cope with life’s adversity. Studies clearly show that lives are being saved and improved through these programs. At-risk children’s grades improve, violence drops, soldiers cope, people suddenly have a reason to live and a chance to make a better life.
I can’t thank the David Lynch Foundation enough for providing me with this opportunity. These are moments that I will never ever forget and I will do my best to spread the word. I will write you a song or something!

In 10 or 20 years, there may be no ice left in the Arctic region; a sea that would dramatically impact global warming for the worse.
There's a glimmer of hope, though.
A letter sent by President Obama to Latin Grammy winning singer-songwriter Alejandro Sanz offers significant hope for the creation of an Arctic sanctuary in the face of accelerating global warming.
How'd Sanz become one of the faces of this movement to Save the Arctic? In June 2013, he took a trip to the Arctic with some Greenpeace members to survey the effects of global warming in the region. His perspective was permanently changed, and witnessing the devastation led to his efforts to champion the Save the Arctic movement along with other Hispanic celebrities, including Penélope Cruz, Javier Bardem and Pedro Almodóvar. Naturally, he reached out to President Obama to recognize the critical state of things in the Arctic and to support specific measures in support of protecting the region.
In Obama's letter to Sanz, he mentions some of the steps his administration has taken during his time in office, including the issuing of the Climate Action Plan and The National Strategy for the Arctic Region.

Congrats to Steve P. of Winter Springs, Florida, winner of the trip to Los Angeles to attend David Lynch's birthday party at the El Rey, where he'll witness Ringo Starr receive the "Lifetime of Peace & Love" Award! Tonight, Steve will be a part of this incredible Hollywood experience.
Urgency Network: What was your initial response when you found out you won the prize?
Steve: Total disbelief! I’m not that lucky; it has to be a joke! Even after speaking with someone at Urgency Network, I was still afraid to believe it! Then I got the confirmation email from the airline! Well I’ll be: it’s true! Still smiling!
Urgency Network: How did you find out about the Urgency grand prize, and what actions did you take to win?
Steve: One of my Facebook friends (a fellow Beatle freak) shared it. As soon as I saw it, I went straight to the page and signed up. I liked the page, shared it on my timeline, signed up for the newsletter and watched the videos. It was then that I saw what The David Lynch Foundation really does. I thought, ‘That’s very cool, I’m so glad I did this.’
Urgency Network: Tell us about your life!
Steve: I got my first guitar when I was eight years old, and after seeing the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show, I knew right then that that was all I wanted to do. But life finds its own path, and even though I managed it for a while, the responsibilities of life led me to pursue other things. I didn’t get rich, I didn’t become famous, but I did alright. I never stopped playing and writing music. I come from a musical family and it’s like breathing to me. I’ve had heartache in my life as have we all, and I’ve known great joy. I’ve learned that the greatest gift we can give each other is to share ourselves. Whether we like it or not, we are all linked, be it by the bond of family, our connection to the earth, or our place in the universe. There is only one law: “Do nothing to harm another!” Everything else is cool! Oh, and I still gig two or three times a week!
Urgency Network: What are your thoughts on Ringo Starr receiving the Lifetime of Peace & Love Award, as well as the work of The David Lynch Foundation?
Steve: I think Ringo Starr deserves this recognition. I can’t think of another person who has done more to personify “Peace and Love” the way that he has. With Ringo, it’s not a crusade; it’s a way of life. He just comes by it “naturally” and that’s the way it should be. He just tries to go through every day with that in mind. If we all did that, it truly would be a better world. The David Lynch Foundation should be commended, not only for recognizing Ringo’s contribution, but for all of the good work that they do, taking on sometimes unpopular or neglected causes and bringing them back into the mainstream. Bravo!

What was your initial response when you found out you won the prize?
There was a burst of joy in my heart as I will be meeting Ram Dass and other disciples of Maharajji. Already, I was feeling the power of Maharajji and his presence. I feel that this is a miracle caused by Maharajji. I was reading Miracle of Love by Ram Dass and one more miracle has happened to clear my doubting mind.
How did you find out about the Urgency grand prize, and what actions did you take to win?
I was browsing about Maharajji on the internet and suddenly I found out about Ram Dass and the cause for which the money is collected. I did not enter the contest to win; I wanted do my small bit to support Ram Dass’s beautiful cause of preserving the teachings of Maharajji.
Tell us about your life!
My name is Divakar Tanjore, and I am from South India. Currently, I live in Princeton NJ. I am a software Engineer by profession. I am married; my wife’s name is Gowri and my daughter's name is Swetha. I have been open to spirituality, and in the last few years I have become more spiritual. I have deep interest in healing and have learned and practiced energy healing, like Reiki and spiritual healing. I am deeply interested in chanting mantras.
I have a deep interest in Saints around the world like Christ, Shiridi Sai Baba, etc. Recently I came across Maharajji and found a teacher in him who resonates so closely with my heart. I feel that I have a deep connection with Maharajji and feel him around me.
What are your thoughts on Ram Dass and the work of the Love Serve Remember Foundation?
Ram Dass has done a great job in spreading the divine message of Maharajji in the world. Though I am from India, I came to know about Maharajji through RamDass’ work Be Here Now and Miracle of Love. I am sure the Divine love of Maharajji will continue to flourish and reach the deserving people through the work of Ram Dass, KrishnaDas and other loving devotees of Maharajji and Love Serve and Remember Foundation.

The #Arctic30 protect a threatened region, and activism is threatened in the process
The fight against climate change took a dramatic turn this year, as (30) Greenpeace activists were arrested and detained on charges of piracy and hooliganism by Russian Security agents in October of 2013. Russian security agents illegally boarded the Arctic Sunrise in international waters, seizing the ship and detaining all those on board at gunpoint. The Arctic 30 were arrested for peacefully taking action against destructive Arctic oil drilling and the onslaught of climate change, protesting at state-owned Gazprom's Arctic drill platform in the Barents Sea.
However, there’s light at the end of this tunnel, the activists are now being granted exit visas and will be able to return home in the coming days. The Hamburg Tribunal, whose rules are binding to any party of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, ruled in favor of releasing the Greenpeace ship and the Arctic 30. Russia’s compliance is interpreted by many as a means of cleaning their international image in light of the rapid approach of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.
Nelson Mandela Passes Away, but his legacy lives on
The passing of Nelson Mandela on December 5, 2013 (age 95) serves as a moment of both sadness and loss as the world loses a true visionary. His passing also invites remembrance and celebration of a leader whose efforts significantly impacted race relations in South Africa and the world. An anti-apartheid revolutionary, Nelson Mandela was the President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. Prior to his historical Presidency - as the first black chief executive in South Africa - he led a life dedicated to anti-colonial politics, particularly marked by non-violent tactics which then led into militant attempts to end apartheid in the South African government. He then served a 27 year prison sentence, being released in 1990 after an international campaign lobbied for his release. He received hundreds of honors throughout his life, trumped by his Nobel Peace Prize of 1993.
In the Rivonia Trial Speech of 1964, Mandela famously stated:
"I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die. "
Success for Gay Marriage
With the legalization of gay marriage in over 16 states and civil unions for same-sex couples in 4 states, the gay rights movement is seen by many as the fastest growing civil rights movement in U.S. history. One of the most significant victories of this year is the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to get rid of a statute within DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act) that denied federal benefits to gay couples married under state law. The fight will continue into 2014, as 29 states still deem gay marriage illegal.
Malala Yousafzai brings women and children’s educational issues to the fore
This 16 year old Pakistani education, children and women’s rights activist was awarded the Sakharov prize for freedom of thought by the European Parliament this year and Pakistan’s National Youth Peace Prize, as well as receiving a nomination for the 2013 Nobel Peace Prize. The Taliban attempted to assassinate her on October of 2012, shooting her in the head which left her in critical condition and unconscious. This assassination attempt led to an international and national movement to support Malala’s efforts and to bring education to all children in the world. She now lives and attends school in England. We’ll definitely be seeing more outstanding work from this power-house 8th grader in the future.

On Wednesday, December 18th, "The Russian parliament...formally adopted an amnesty that will end legal proceedings against the Arctic 30" (Greenpeace USA). After wrongfully being held in the first place, the Arctic 30 and Pussy Riot are ready to leave the Russian jail. However, what exactly are the terms of amnesty? Will the protestors be home for the holidays? And, how are the different parties involved reflecting on this experience and registering it as they move forward?
Arctic Sunrise Captain Speaks
Peter Wilcox, Arctic Sunrise ship Captain, delivered a statement that addresses the injustice for both the activists and the Arctic region that's traceable with the situation that's unfolded over the last 2 months, even as he expresses gratitude for being granted amnesty.
“I might soon be going home to my family, but I should never have been charged and jailed in the first place. We sailed north to bear witness to a profound environmental threat but our ship was stormed by masked men wielding knives and guns. Now it’s nearly over and we may soon be truly free, but there’s no amnesty for the Arctic. We may soon be home, but the Arctic remains a fragile global treasure under assault by oil companies and the rising temperatures they’re driving. We went there to protest against this madness. We were never the criminals here.”
Russian President Speaks
Russian President Vladimir Putin stands by his belief that Greenpeace's Arctic 30 were acting on behalf of a foreign rival in terms of interfering with Russia's 'offshore development.' He names no specific nation, though, in expressing this theory. (New York Times).
Putin asserts his stand as such:
"Why was this (protest) carried out? Either it was to put pressure on a company or on someone's orders interfere with Russia's offshore development," Putin said, suggesting foreign rivals could have been behind it but naming no nation.
"This is a serious thing for us. And we do not plan to soften (our stance), we will only be toughening it."
Putin also addresses Russia's decision to adopt amnesty, and Greenpeace's role in this decision.
"As for the fact that they can now get amnesty ... we are not doing this for them," Putin said. "What happened must be a lesson and should, I hope, dispose us, with Greenpeace, to working positively together."
Amnesty and Moving Forward
According to the AP, "The amnesty will go into effect as soon as the bill is published in the government newspaper, which is expected to happen on Thursday. But it allows authorities a six-month period to carry it out, meaning some of the prisoners could in theory wait weeks or months before getting released. Prisoners would apply to prison administration for amnesty, and officials would decide whether they were eligible. Those of them who committed disciplinary offenses behind bars could be denied amnesty."
The World Speaks Up for the Arctic 30
"The campaign to free the Arctic 30 has seen 860 protests in 46 countries and in more than 150 cities worldwide, while more than 2.6 million people wrote to Russian embassies. Supporters included Sir Paul McCartney, Madonna, Jude Law, Oscar-winning actress Marion Cotillard, Ewan McGregor, Juliette Lewis, Ricky Martin, Edward Norton, Gael García Bernal, Ricardo Darín, Alejandro Sanz, Pedro Almodóvar and scores more famous names" (Greenpeace USA).
"Political support was offered by Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff, Angela Merkel, David Cameron, François Hollande, Ban Ki-moon and Hillary Clinton. Twelve Nobel Peace Prize winners called for their release, including Desmond Tutu, Aung San Suu Kyi and Lech Walesa" (Greenpeace USA).

Why global warming gets the short end of the stick
Scientific American Mind sheds light on the psychological patterns that affect governmental funding decisions. Read on for insight on why terrorism prevention may receive more funding than global warming, and how the intention of a perpetrator directly impacts public and governmental interest in the conditions and events of our world.
Intention Matters
"When a bad deed makes headlines, the first thing we want to know is whether the perpetrator did it "on purpose." Intention matters in our moral judgments, as we intuitively realize and many studies confirm. Now studies suggest that this focus on the cause of an event can distort our understanding of the damage done -- and knowing harm has been inflicted can even change the way we view the victims, ascribing them pain and consciousness when none might exist."
Here's an experiment conducted that exhibits the way in which people gauge effects based on their knowledge of the responsible party's intentions related to the action. "55 subjects read about a man who had either accidentally or intentionally diverted the flow of a river, causing a water shortage. Participants were then briefly shown an itemized list of the damages and were asked to estimate the total. Those who believed the diversion to be accidental estimated the damages accurately (on average, $2,753, as compared with the true total of $2,862), whereas those who thought the divers had been done on purpose vastly overestimated the damage at $5,120."
Politics of psychology
"This psychological bias could have political implications: if governments systematically overestimate the damages done by intentional harms like terrorism, they might 'leave fewer resources to combat other kinds of harms,' such as global warming, [Daniel] Ames says [Princeton University psychologist]."
Media maps this theory of intention
Bringing this psychological consideration into proximity with the media - and particularly the way broadcast journalism, and media at large, displays an interest in certain national and world events while rendering other events or conditions invisible - even moreso amplifies the notion of 'malleable morality' that informs governmental priorities. Terrorism and global warming differ in the way intention is understood by the public, and this can be traced across multiple institutions.
Benefits of Grassroots Efforts
We can then understand grassroots efforts of organizations like Greenpeace as a way of identifying a cause for global warming and holding particular parties accountable for the environmental changes that the earth is currently undergoing - and casting a moral light on the issue. Perhaps as more and more of these kinds of implications become mainstream (and they are), we will begin to see global warming enter the same kind of funding paradigm that terrorism holds. The question is, then: Will it be too late for the environment by the time that psychological shift occurs within the public eye?

What was your initial response upon finding out that you won the prize?
My feelings about winning this experience are next to impossible to describe. STS9 is my absolute favorite band. When I went through my email and I saw that I won, I could not believe it. I thought it wasn't real. But when I realized it was, my feelings were uncontrollable. I ran around the house just yelling 'Yesssssss' before I fell to my knees, yelling 'My dream has come true.'
How did you find out about the Urgency grand prize, and what actions did you take to win?
My girlfriend and I really wanted to go to this 5 night New Years Run, but we were not financially ready to afford a huge trip like this. So we basically gave up and thought about other things to do. Then we both ran into some huge road bumps in our lives, and things have really been looking down. We were just grateful to have each other. Then, I saw the contest on Facebook and I decided to try it. I found out about it one day before the contest was over, and I got in as many entries as I could. I have never won anything as big as this before, so when I realized it was real, I could barely believe it. I can not thank you guys enough for giving me this opportunity of a life time.
What are your thoughts on the work of Conscious Alliance and STS9?
Conscious Alliance is the shit! I LOVE the artwork that they share with supporters, especially for STS9.
I love STS9 more than anything (besides my girlfriend, of course.) The first time I saw them was at Electric Forest 2012 for the two-night extravaganza!! My mind was blown, and I INSTANTLY fell in love with them.
STS9 brought my girlfriend and me together as well! We met at Summerset this year; we both found out that the only reason that we were at Summerset was for STS9. And, that's when I knew I had to have this girl. She is my Tribe Queen as I am her Tribe King! Our Love for each other is as mutual as our love for Sound Tribe. So these tickets are most definitely going to the right people!
I can't wait to have 5 nights with my favorite boys! I am finally going to hear every song that I have wanted to hear so bad by Tribe that they just don't normally play. I absolutely cannot wait for these magnificent 5 nights. Again, thank you so much!

What was your initial response upon finding out that you won the prize?
I was really shocked. I did not expect it at all.
How did you find out about the Urgency grand prize, and what actions did you take to win?
I saw it on the David Lynch Foundation website; I just check there from time to time to see what they are up to. I shared the site with my colleagues who I thought might be open to supporting the David Lynch Foundation, and I watched some of the videos.
Tell us about your life!
Im a Citizen Service Officer helping the public apply for government programs like employment insurance, passports and pensions. I see a lot of happy relaxed people but also some people who are going through difficult situations as well. I always do my Transcendental Meditation practice right after work every day and I find it makes a real difference in dealing with stressful events.
What are your thoughts on #ChangeBeginsWithin and the work of the David Lynch Foundation?
I have seen the practical benefits for myself in doing the T.M. practice for more than 36 years so I know the huge benefits it could have for first responders and other people who have lived through very stressful challenges. I am most enthusiastic about the changes that are seen in society with a sufficient number of individuals practicing the TM technique; we can see a peaceful, invincible New York, United States , North America and world.

What was your initial response upon finding out that you won the prize?
Really?!!!!! THANK YOU and Merry Christmas to me! Honestly, though, I was very grateful!
How did you find out about the Urgency grand prize and why did you decide to participate?
I found out about the Urgency Grand Prize because Brendan Benson tweeted about the contest, and I was excited to learn about the opportunity of having a chance to see and meet amazing artists at the Ryman Auditorium.
Tell us about your life!
Family, community, fantastic friends and music with God mixed in; these elements have contributed to who I am. Hanging on my wall in my office is a picture that says: “Work as if you don’t need the money, Love as if you have never been hurt, Dance as if no one is watching”. Professionally, you can find me during the work week coordinating fundraising events, meetings with corporate and community partners, serving my community for United Way of Greater Atlanta. My “real” job and pleasures include: mom of three aspiring young adults, wife to my husband of 23 years and loving on our adorable doggies, Freckles and Suzie. Don’t be surprised to find me on a front rail somewhere/anywhere at a concert with my daughter and friends feeding my unquenchable appetite and lifeline to sanity…MUSIC.
What are your thoughts on #ChangeBeginsWithin and the work of the David Lynch Foundation?
What has intrigued me most about Change Begins Within, is a movement to serve specific target populations, including veterans, women and children. It is very exciting to see meditation being introduced to our children and helping them understand the capabilities and potential that are inside each and every one of us. The awareness piece is a huge component to the success of this campaign and DLF is definitely taking the measures and outreach steps to ensure the message is spread to a wide variety of communities.

Caressa A. and her husband of Holiday, Florida, recently won a trip to San Francisco for supporting Greenpeace's #SaveTheArctic campaign. There, they got to experience a performance of a lifetime by Portugal. The Man and had the opportunity to stand with the #Arctic30. Read on for the details of Caressa's experience.
OMG! Omgoodness! I just won a trip. I’m pretty sure I just won a trip. Wow, is this real!? These are all things that were going through my mind just days before I headed to San Francisco with my husband. I couldn't believe that this was happening. Tears kept welling up in my eyes. I never - let me repeat, NEVER - win anything. I scrambled to get everything in order and submitted. Fast forward a few days later. I was notified Monday afternoon, and Thursday bright and early, we were on a flight heading to San Francisco, CA!
The flight went well. We rushed off the airplane and felt the spirit of the city immediately. It was the calmest airport I think I have ever been. We hopped in a taxi and swooned all the way to the hotel. Wow, it reminded me of my hometown in Ohio where I lived until the end of my 6th grade year. Sadly, my home town is no longer so historic. Much of it has been torn down and rebuilt. I’m amazed that such an old city kept its history; and yet, it’s so modern at the same time. San Fran is a plethora of new and old to delight any visitor. It reminded my husband and me of his home country of Jordan. When most people think of Jordan, they think of the desert. They are often delighted to find out that nearly a third of the country is mountainous. And they love to build homes right on the mountains too. It’s so befitting for us.
When we reached the hotel, it was breathtaking. It was a fancy historical hotel with doormen, and one of those rotating doors, and a trolley of sorts to hold our luggage. We stepped inside our room, and it was lovely. Look at this feather topped bed with feather pillows. I slept in utter luxury that night.
Of course, there was no time to waste. We had a very limited amount of time, so we needed to get moving. We settled our things, called the kids, freshened up and hit the concierge right away. He helped us find a night tour, and we promptly went to Fisherman’s wharf to get a bite. We ate at the Hard Rock Café and then bought items for our kids.
After dinner and shopping, we still had a little time to hit the souvenir shop across the street. This is where we found that there is a tax on plastic! What a great idea. Now I know why there were not plastic bags in our hotel room except in the ice chest. I now love the city even more.
We headed to the double decker and went to the top. Hmm, San Fran is colder than I expected. It didn’t matter. We were going to bundle up and have a great time.
We were able to see all kinds of amazing architecture, a few familiar places from TV and movies, learn interesting facts about the city (Did you know Rice-a-Roni is not the San Francisco treat but the Chicago treat!?). We rode the top as well as the bottom of the Double Decker Bay Bridge. San Francisco was amazing at night. Just amazing. I could not believe we were there.
The next day, we woke up really early to the sound of room service. I knew we had to get a lot done in a short amount of time, and I just had to go all the way to Muir Woods National Park to see the Redwoods. We had fresh coffee, berries and oatmeal. It worked out well and we arranged our Tour Bus Tickets as fast as we could. The bus was comfortable and we enjoyed listening to the tour guide while viewing the scenery all the way to the park. We took the Golden Gate Bridge both ways. We saw the infamous Alcatraz, and the bay was beautiful. When we arrived, we only had 45 minutes to walk around, but it was definitely enough time to enjoy the park. I took video of a stream to remember the sounds as the water trickled by. Sometimes I saw the sunlight peering through the woods. It was beautiful.
When we left, the bus was so comfortable that I nearly fell asleep on the way back. But the views were so lovely, I just had to stay awake. Soon we arrived in Sausalito to see the yachts. It seems like it wouldn’t be so nice, a slew of boats; but it has a special feel to it. You can’t help but imagine getting on one and heading off into the water. We had a short break to look around and grab a snack. We chose a place called Fish & Chips. All of our food & condiments were in paper containers & bags with one plastic bag to hold it all which again, was taxed. I love this city. San Francisco is approximately 80% Eco Friendly with a goal of zero percent waste by 2020.
After our tour, it was time to start getting ready for The Grand Prize Experience! We headed to Pier 15 a little early wanting to try some of San Fran’s famous transportation. Our first mode was the famous Trolley!
The cable cars use no electricity or fuel, making them extremely eco-friendly. Our next mode of transportation was the street car on the F-line. The F-line runs on electricity. The streetcars are originals and bring you straight back to years gone by.
Next, we arrived at Pier 15. There was this interesting interactive sculpture by San Francisco Artist Peter Hudson called “Homouroboros” that moves based on input energy. The exhibit was scheduled to move just days after our departure.
It was time to see if we could go to the Rainbow Warrior a little early. Sure enough, Iris of greenpeace called promptly. I told her how nervous I was; she put me at ease and came to pick us up. She was great and extremely hospitable. We are so glad we met her.
Iris brought us to the helipad on the greenpeace Rainbow Warrior ship. It had never even crossed my mind they would have a helipad so I found that quite…well, cool. The helipad was being set up for guests who included, you guessed it. Us. How cool is that!? We were special guests, too. Not just the rockin’ band coming to play, but also us. It was feeling so unimaginable. The day had been unimaginable, and I can’t even put everything I was feeling into words, though many come to mind. Ecstatic, adrenaline, surreal, excited. I think I must have shot out a thousand smiles. I felt like a little kid in a candy store. We did various publicity shots around the ship, and even were interviewed by a Russian Journalist for a newscast in Russia. I was very nervous but got my bearings and answered some questions regarding the Arctic Circle & the Arctic 30. I made it clear that the work the Arctic 30 was doing was incredible, and that they need to be released right away. The Arctic 30 are not pirates or hooligans. They are heroes. They are out there doing what every one of us should be doing. They are standing up for what is right, they are standing up not just for our future but for future generations. They are also standing up for the earth and its other inhabitants. The devastation being caused by man is absolutely, without a doubt, cataclysmic.
After the mini-interview, we were brought on a tour of the ship where we met many people. We met Anna Wagner who is the Senior National Organizer for Greenpeace. Between Iris & Anna we were well taken care of. We also met several of the crew and The Urgency Network Co-Founders Donald Eley & Brandon Deroche. We met family members of Arctic 30 activist Dima Litvinov. They gave an impassioned and inspiring speech regarding Dima & the Arctic 30. We also received an amazing tour of the Greenpeace Rainbow Warrior. She was a pro, very interesting information told to us as if she were a longtime friend. Everyone was so inviting and friendly. We really felt that they were glad we were there. I was much more at ease by this point. At one point during the tour, the tour guide took us to the cockpit where the captain of the ship told us about what they did to make the ship so eco-friendly. This was the highlight of my tour on the ship. The ship runs about 70% without fuel. How amazing for such a huge vessel!
After the tour, it was time to head over to The Exploratorium. We got to explore the venue and enjoy the exhibits while the band had conducted a sound check. It was very cool to be around while they worked on the set.
In the beginning of the concert, we had one of the best spots in the house. As a fan, I was excited. Nice and close next to the pillars.
After the show we met lead singer John Gourley; what a wonderful opportunity. John and Zach Carothers (Bass Guitar & Backup Vocals) are both from Alaska & grew up together. This is just one reason why the cause is so very important to portugaltheman. I’m glad it is because they are a kick ass band with a kick ass sound and it was a kick ass show.
Honestly, I can’t tell you how much this trip has meant to my family. In the end, it inspired my husband and I to be more proactive. We realized that we have been slacking, not doing enough and that we need to step it up. It’s not just that we need to be an example to our peers, but we also need to be an example to those younger than us as well as, and especially to, our children who are the next generation. When we keep trying and we don’t give up, the Butterfly Effect can be instrumental in bringing about change. We need to counteract negativity with this positivity. I used to be very negative about the state of things, and we just can’t think that way. That is how you lose, and we have no choice but to win. I now see a bigger picture, and I’m hoping all of our actions influence change. I feel more positive than I have in a long time.
Do not forget the big picture, do not give up but work now, work harder than ever before & thank you to everyone who have inspired me - who have inspired us - to do more.

The Urgency Network recently sent the winner of the Save the Arctic: Atoms For Peace campaign, Nicole R. of Upton, Massachusetts, to Los Angeles, California to see Thom Yorke and Atoms For Peace at the Hollywood Bowl. For Nicole's take on her once-in-a-lifetime experience, read on!
I could remember expecting to meet an intimidating formal businessman when I was told that I was going to meet the co-founder of The Urgency Network, only to find that the said person was this interesting, charismatic man wearing a jacket and a baseball cap. When I told him that, he said to me, “I worked all my life not to be that person,” and I realized that here is the kind of person I want to grow up to be like.
My feet serve as a constant reminder of my walk around Hollywood. I walked to and from my hotel, and I don’t regret that decision. Even if I had to buy shoes on the way back, I’m glad I chose to walk, because then I got the chance to get lost and meet new people and really savor my stay there, especially while I was still alone.
My friend (and her family) chose to drive from Vegas to the concert venue, and she arrived a few minutes into the concert. This is one of those happy reunion moments in the movies, except we were both focused on running to our VIP seats!
The concert and the after show parties were unlike anything we’ve ever experienced before: the music, the venue, the people, everything was just phenomenal! We even got an autograph from Nigel Godrich!
A huge bulk of the pictures from the trip were taken at the Mondrian Hotel because it was so brilliantly designed, and the pool was just beautiful!
The ride around LA was also exciting! I enjoyed chatting with the Lyft people, and it was amusing how we just had so much to talk about.
Throughout my stay there, I was literally shaking with excitement because everything was so new to me; I have never travelled alone, never been to the west coast, never watched an outdoor concert, and especially never seen Atoms For Peace in person!
The whole experience was thrilling, and it really opened my eyes as to how many opportunities there are out there that could potentially be life-changing, just as this was for me and all the people involved. After hearing that I won this experience, a friend of mine even told me that she found the courage to take more chances in life.
This made me happy because my motto in life is to be the reason for change, and I was empowered to do just that. Simply by watching videos, reading articles, and signing petitions, I made a difference. Just by doing those things, I was given this incredible experience.

Tell us about your life.
I’m a 37 y.o. mom of 3. I have a teenage boy and two young girls. I am married to the love of my life. I have a family that cares about the environment and cares about people. We are loving, diverse and tolerant. I’m very passionate about my family and quite passionate about the earth. I find it highly disturbing the rate that the ice caps are melting and even more disturbing how slowly people are taking it seriously. If we don’t practice sustainability we will not have an earth that can sustain us. It’s a real threat.
How did you feel upon receiving the exciting news that you won?
I’m still overwhelmed. I never win anything! I’m excited to meet the band, and excited to go on the Rainbow Warrior Ship. I cannot believe I’m going to be on a Greenpeace Boat! It’s surreal. I keep getting teary eyed from all this exciting emotion! It’s incredible. It’s crazy!
What actions did you take on the campaign?
I signed a petition and shared it on Facebook to help save the Arctic. I regularly post a status update about being an online activist. I let people know that it doesn’t take long and that what we do makes a difference. Many organizations email you back to tell you what progress the petition you signed has made. It’s wonderful that they do that. It encourages you and I want to encourage others. Together we can indeed make a difference.
What are your thoughts on Greenpeace's #SaveTheArctic campaign and the state of the Arctic region?
I think it’s fantastic what Greenpeace is doing. What makes it greater and even amazing is the people feel it’s just something they have to do. In spite of the risks involved, they know their part is important for the 'now' and the future. It’s my hope that more people will realize that even small efforts make a difference. My heart goes out to the Arctic 30. These men and women are brave and should be freed. They should not have spent one night in prison. I’ve been petitioning for their release.

Interview with Caressa A. by Jessica Lipman of The Urgency Network
Ram Dass has assumed multiple identities throughout his life that have significantly impacted Western academic, spiritual, and cultural spheres. Before he was known as the spiritual teacher and writer Ram Dass, he identified as Dr. Richard Alpert, a prominent Harvard psychologist and psychedelic pioneer who, with Dr. Timothy Leary, launched the mind/body/spirit movement in the 1960s. Upon traveling to India in 1967, Dr. Richard Alpert was renamed ‘Ram Dass’ by his guru Neem Karoli Baba, meaning “servant of God.”
LSD Guru to Spiritual Guru
At that moment, everything changed. Ram Dass' experimentation with the consciousness-expanding potential of psychedelics, evolved into a spiritual practice of awakening embedded within his mantra "Be Here Now" that permeates his 1971 seminal work of the same title. While Dr. Timothy Leary would transgressively identify as a proponent of the therapeutic and spiritual benefits of LSD, urging the Counter Culture to "turn on, tune in, and drop out," Ram Dass headed to India and returned with spiritual methods that have since significantly altered Western perspectives of consciousness.
Ram Dass’ spiritual leadership, particularly with his practice of karma yoga and spiritual service, has not only invited millions of souls to access their deep, individuated spiritual practice and path. His teachings also infuse various social causes and efforts with which Ram Dass has been an integral part since the 1960s. Ram Dass has taken up social action endeavors, ranging from incarceration and rehabilitation via spiritual awakening with The Prison-Ashram Project, to conscious dying with the Living/Dying Project.

Applied Dharma, Collective Freedom
I would say that the thrust of my life has been initially about getting free, and then realizing that my freedom is not independent of everybody else. Then I am arriving at that circle where one works on oneself as a gift to other people so that one doesn't create more suffering. I help people as I work on myself and I work on myself to help people.
I have to listen - we all have to - to hear how we honor all of the different levels of the games we are in. I'm a member of a family, I'm a member of a nation-state, I'm a member of the community, I have a sexual identity, I have an age identity, a religious identity. It's important to feel how your incarnation takes form through these identities, and to ask yourself, what does it mean to live with integrity within each of those systems?
I've been perfecting that circle for thirty years. It's karma yoga. It's the Bodhisattva vow. My life is about applied dharma. On a socio-political level - I'm a survivor. Once that faith and that connection and that emptiness is strong enough, then I experience looking around for the fields I can play in. That's something that I have had to learn because I used to be so busy seeing the spiritual journey as something that you did by yourself.
Ram Dass and Social Action
I work with AIDS, with business, with government, with teenagers, with people dying of cancer, with blindness. It doesn't matter, because your agenda is always the same. Do what you can on this plane to relieve suffering by constantly working on yourself to be an instrument for the cessation of suffering. To me, that's what the emerging game is all about.
I have been part of a group called Social Venture Network - exploring the relationship between spirit and business. We have two conferences a year and it has about 500 people involved, including Ben and Jerry's and The Body Shop. Working with dying people is dealing with my issues about death and working with business people is dealing with my issues about money and power.
I have worked with Seva Foundation for many years. Seva has been involved in relieving blindness in India and Nepal.
I have worked with the Living Dying Project, as well as the Zen Hospice Center where we help hospice workers and anyone who works with dying people- we teach them how to be “loving rocks”.
#Be Here Now is hosted by the Love Serve Remember Foundation, aiming to spread the teachings of Ram Dass by raising $50,000 to build a digital media library to preserve his teachings.
